[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
Is this game a masterpiece? It is close to and certainly oozes very high quality. Sturmwind EX is for the most part a horizontal scrolling shoot’em up, an enhanced edition of the 2013 Sega Dreamcast release. One of the best features of the game is the beauty and the sheer amount of graphical details. There are many shoot'em up games with lots of moving stuff on screen, but 98% of these moving parts are either enemies, bullets or your own ship. I never saw a shmup with so much happening on the screen - which will not attack or kill you. It is just background, or foreground, it is rather diversionary, but it also fuels your immersion in a credible world. I consider filtering out the eye candy to be part of the challenge, like memorizing the enemy formations. Choose between 2 modes: hardcore without saves and 6 levels, while normal mode (16 levels) enables the auto-save feature after each level. Enemies appear from all sides, so the safest place to be as long as you don't know every level by heart is in the middle of the screen. Your ship can switch between 3 main weapons: a red flare with multi directional fire, a green flare with horizontal direction fire only or a blue flare with a horizontal laser. All can be upgraded 3 times, charged for more impact, and switched to shoot backwards. You have to choose the best weapon depending on the current enemy threat. Find drones to enhance your ship or use smartbombs to clear the screen. The bosses are huge, colourful and powerful but not invincible. What I enjoyed a lot were the environemental hazards during boss fights that you might oversee at first while concentrating on the boss only. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1933028060 Sturmwind plays much like a good old classic arcade game, shoot to kill everything, but it requires a bit of strategy particularly in the use of weapons. It also seems to be rather bug free and worked flawlessly with my XBox 360 gamepad. Conclusion: Visually stunning shoot'em up with smooth and responsive controls.

Totally love this game & my experience so far its almost perfect except it would of been nice to have the original story introduction from the Dreamcast version what a shame that was left out, controllers work great & no lags & bugs so far, but i will point out, the charge beam is much slower at charging than the DC version of the game,. The graphics are incredible & mind blowing, Great catchy Acid Techno sound tracks, 16 mission/stages each with a big boss at the end to deal with, 3 levels of difficulty easy, medium, hard, lots of variation & enemies, Awesome weapons that you can fire at the front & at the back, There is a charge beam think R-Type,. If you have never heard of this game its on the Sega Dreamcast just called Sturmwind, it was originally on the Atari Jaguar it was called Native & sadly got cancelled i really hope it gets finished one day ?, you are in for a real Shoot Em Up treat. If you love side scrolling shoot em ups...Highly recommend buy this game its AWESOME :)
I had this game pre-ordered on Dreamcast yrs before it was released, so brought it again as soon as it dropped on Steam. As mentioned, it's not a perfect port as there is a bit of slowdown and the odd bug here and there. It also doesn't have the DC intro nor feel as polished overall. Other than the updated graphics which do look great the DC remains the better version. Other than that its a great little shooter, and if you don't have access to a DC this is a great buy at this price...
Don't be fooled by the trailer, the game isn't nearly as good looking in actual gameplay, and the soundtrack flat out sucks. Low production and not much to offer.
The game crashes in the level map 4, it's not possible to make any progress. It seems like the developer knew it, but ignored the problem. This was my review when I recent purchased this game A spaceshooter game all players of this genre should have, this was a late non oficial release on dreamcast, I'm glad the developer brought it to life again it deserves to be here on Steam. It has lots of improvements that it used to be on dreamcast.
A arcade-style shoot ‘em up that manages to complicate as much as it satisfies
Review with pics here Imagine you’ve just opened up what looks like another R-Type game. Shooting up aliens in your spaceship, it’s straight forward, and you are untouchable. Then you misjudge a hitbox, you think you’ve just lost your first life, but then your weapon changes completely without taking away your ship. This new gun is shooting everywhere except in front of you, but now enemies are coming from the top, bottom, and behind you so it kind of makes sense. Another hit, but you still haven’t lost a life, you shot a power-up and something was announced in German. This is not the game you thought it was
German-engineered
It’s pretty forgivable to skip reading a game’s manual nowadays: most games hold your hand or use level design to take care of this part, or they follow the design philosophy of “easy to learn, but hard to master.” But Sturmwind EX manages to lie just outside either of these scenarios. Selecting play from the menu will give you the option of mission mode, arcade mode and how to play, and the last option is key. The three different weapons behave very differently. The Nordwest can be fired 360 degrees depending on when the fire button is released, the Rudel fires a narrow stream of bullets, and the Lichtblitz fires 2 streams of bullets that flare out and then converge again. The weapons can be cycled through freely, and you’ll have to think carefully about which weapon system you are using when you pick up power-ups to upgrade your weapon system with drones. The weapon system has to match the power-up in order to upgrade, so that means shooting the power-up careening towards you and then swapping to that weapon. Getting hit takes away your current weapon system and its upgrades, but picking up its power-up will restore it. And in this dance of juggling weapon systems the player can find bliss and eternal life.
Methodical
Past the tangle of weapon systems there is the rest of the gameplay. You have a smart bomb that will obliterate everything on the screen and deal heavy damage to bosses while also giving the player some invincibility frames. The player can also switch to shooting backwards which will be handy for shooting the many enemies that either attack from the left side of the screen or like to swirl around the player. Shooting behind also rearranges your drones so that they will fire forward while the main weapon fires back. Lastly there is a high-powered but volatile beam that can be charged for damage, but charging it too much will overheat the ship and destroy your weapon system. I rarely used the beam due to its spicy nature. With all of these pieces in place players are given a bevy of options to tackle the enemies. The standard enemy ships are also accompanied by many headache inducing hazards. The yellow hued mines that swarm the screen frequently melt into the many red and yellow tones used in the game for effects, projectiles and backgrounds. Some times debris, mechanical arms, giant fish, or explosions also cause damage. Also, at one point there is a wrecking ball and I’m nominating it and every debris in this game for best villain of 2019. The game kind of gives a warning by dropping a signpost and pointing out danger, but it doesn’t actually negate the need for trial and error. It’s also worth mentioning here how the game also uses limited view at points or shifts vertically in addition to the usual horizontal. Chalk it up to cheeky coin eating level design, but it was also frustrating.
More explosions
The art style is detailed. Lots of intricate pieces with both 3D and 2D surfaces, background, foreground and objects to spare. There is also a nice variety of environments inspired by horrific water monsters as well as biomechanical art that also fit the thump of the Euro club music that I won’t mention any more. The boss designs are also quite eclectic with mechas, a kind of evil octopus head, and a praying mantis with tubes running out of it. I guess what I’m saying is that focal point of the visual style here is to inspire that one edgy middle school kid to not actually read Lovecraft but still constantly insert it in every scenario he can. As much as admire the intricacy and variety of the design it was a bit cluttered and incoherent for my tastes, and the inconsistencies of what counted as something that could hit your ship was annoying for how busy the screen was with pulsating fish or giant vacuums.
Verdict
Sturmwind keeps players on their toes and constantly occupied with dizzying puzzles and projectiles. Questionable hit boxes are a pretty stock complaint for any shoot ‘em up, outside of that it would be nice to have more content in the game. The difference between difficulties in mission modes comes down to the amount of things on screen and arcade mode challenges players to go through the entire game without retries. Outside of this it would have been nice to have leaderboards at the very least, but co-op, a proper training mode or art gallery unlockables are also not uncommon with current shoot ‘em up releases. Still, this is a solid entry into the genre even if parts of it feel dated.
Visit SaveOrQuit.com for detailed game reviews, posted daily!
Very good shooter but not a perfect port some slowdown and frame drops and little things like dropzone jet man on lv1 are missing otherwise this is hands down the best shooter on steam
Horizontal shmup, featuring modern graphics and good gameplay. Combine the use of your three weapon systems to make your way through many alien infested levels and get a high score on the leaderboards. Much like good old Axelay, if your ship gets damaged you lose the weapon in use, but you can repair it by getting the said weapon bonus item. Mentioning Axelay, the rotational twin vulcan weapon is also "borrowed" from that great old game. One annoying problem with this game is hit detection: Enemy hit boxes are sometimes unclear, especially in large ones and bosses. Moreover, there are cases you can't tell where the actual terrain is, causing your ship to get damage. Other than that, the game has no serious bugs and runs smoothly, even on an low end system. A cautious recommendation.
Excellent portage du shmup indé ULTIME de la Dreamcast. Excellente surprise, euro-shmup super varié, classieux ; adaptation HD très convaincante. Bravo !!
