Fun quirky survivors-like game with a creature collector touch to it, but only if you can get past the machine translation to figure things out for yourself.
This game is bizarre. Not just because of the things in the game itself, but outside of it. Truthfully, I only had interest in this game because it featured characters from a gacha game that I liked that has since ended service back in 2019 called Witch Weapon. This game came out this year just for reference. Honestly, from the look of it, this game didn't look like much. I was going to buy it and enjoy it just because of the inclusion alone, but the game does a lot of intriguing things that... doesn't make it amazing, but it is something to chew on. Disclaimer before you get too interested. The game is entirely in japanese, and the english translation is all machine translated. The game features some light story, so if you dont have some grasp on the japanese language, it's going to suck. Now, it is very much a take on Vampire Survivors, from the random weapons to the automatic gameplay to the timed stages, but this game makes a lot of attempts to differentiate itself, which are interesting, but your mileage may vary. Firstly, aside from weapons and buff items, the game also features companions which you can recruit in an SMT lite kind of way where theres a low, random chance a monster might join you if you defeat them. Every single monster in the game can be recruited, and they all have their own skills, roles, and varying power. The build variety that stems from this alone is insane enough, but you can also breed these monsters in the base camp, which gives exponentially more variation from a single monster. This is actually great, because it keeps build variety from going stale even if you already have a good grasp on the weapons, but this has its own flaws that I will outline later. As mentioned, this game has a base camp, which is this game's form of metaprogression. You craft items, weapons, armor and breed monsters here. It's barebones but it is quaint. This is is mostly where you unlock new items by crafting them, unlike in other bullet heaven games where they are unlocked through achievements or certain actions in the game. The peculiar thing about this though, is this is where weapon evolutions also come from. Yes, instead of finding certain combinations of weapons and items within the stage to unlock stronger versions of your weapons, you grind items to craft stronger versions of them. In a way, this makes the game feel less like a roguelite as the metaprogression feels more involved. You can also craft armor, which not only gives you certain ranges of defense, but also gives you temperature protection, which is another thing the game forces you to think about. The game's music is also, while largely forgettable, isn't horrible to listen to. There's a few tracks that get your head nodding, especially the tracks that play when you fight collab character bosses. As for the flaws of the game. The art, while of decent quality, featuring hand drawn sprites of cute monsters, looks remarkably cheap animation wise. Far be it from me to expect superior graphics from a game that draws its main inspiration from Vampire Survivors, but the squash and stretch animation with limited frames strangely doesn't work without the pixellated graphics. The game's attempts to differentiate itself are interesting, but they also fall flat in several places. The aforementioned breeding aspect is strangely limited. The actual level of the monster doesn't matter when they pass on their stats. It only changes based on the level you catch them on, so you can't really make your own perfectly crafted team of bred monsters, because it basically boils down to a step up upgrade of the monsters in the level range you catch them on. The weapon crafting, while it gives an interesting rhythm to progression, also leads to progression "road bumps" where you are forced to drop weapons that really worked for you in certain level ranges that don't work anymore because you havent crafted their upgrade yet, so you're forced to use the same weapons again and again. As for armor, it almost feels like an afterthought. There's five slots of them, but there really is no reason to mix and match, as individual armor pieces don't offer unique stats. I thought it was to give you a sense of accomplishment, slowly banging out individual armor pieces of a higher tier, but the game gives you so many materials to work with, that the game really should just let you craft armor sets as a whole, and equip them as a whole. In conclusion, while yes, I only bought this game because of certain characters, I didn't have an awful time of it. In fact, I could say I had a lot of fun. But ultimately, this is still a small time indie game, and it will only interest you if you fall in the venn diagram of likes cute anime girls, don't want to think much, and want to pass the time.
4 hours in and i'm not having fun. nothing makes sense, the instructions are mediocre at best. If you're looking for a game like this that is actually good, has responsive controls, and isn't so confusing for no good reason, try Holocure.
Its a good enough game, with more promises of polish and content
