It's the wicked aesthetic that draws you in. The open interpretations and the distorted imagery that holds you through. Pretty sure you know this is your cup of tea from the get-go, with or without a review.
Very good point and click adventure game, an allegory for fighting depression that reminded me Sanitarium. Excellent artwork and writing. 8.5 / 10
Strangeland is a surreal point-and-click adventure on PC developed by Wormwood Studios and published by Wadjet Eye Games. It places you in the role of the silent Fool, exploring a disturbing, dreamlike carnival filled with strange figures and unsettling imagery. The story unfolds in fragments as you move through the world, gradually revealing a narrative centred on regret, trauma, and identity. Rather than relying on direct exposition, it lets meaning emerge through exploration and interpretation. This gives the game a deliberately ambiguous quality, where events often feel symbolic rather than literal. Gameplay follows a traditional point-and-click structure with inventory-based puzzles and environmental interaction. The puzzles are mostly logical and fair, relying more on observation than obscure logic or trial-and-error. Progression is steady, and the game is generally respectful of the player’s ability to piece things together without excessive guidance. Visually, the pixel art is detailed and oppressive rather than bright or decorative, focusing on grotesque imagery and unsettling environments to support the tone. Combined with strong voice acting and an atmospheric soundtrack, the presentation consistently reinforces the game’s uneasy mood. Strangeland is a tightly focused narrative experience that prioritises atmosphere and thematic weight over complexity or challenge. It succeeds in creating a disturbing, memorable journey that will appeal to players who enjoy darker, story-driven adventure games with a strong psychological edge.
This game is amazing. It's genuinely challenging but not frustrating to the point where you will give up, and will keep you coming back until it's solved. Pros - Stunning pixel art. - Eerie atmosphere. - Psychological thirller with horror aesthetic. - Interesting story that unfolds and has great pacing. - Voice acting in the game is superb. - Multiple endings. - Satisfying gameplay, especially for an Adventure game. - Clever and subtle nods to other adventure games in some scenes. Cons - The artist has a heavy fascination with brown colors. There isn't a huge amount of color differentation between scenes. - Locations are used repeatedly and the game world is realtively small. - A one or two puzzles are frustratingly complex and only either get solved through either lots of trial and error, or will have you reaching for a walkthrough guide. There could've been more clues or context for one puzzle in particular. - The games succesful ending only partially brings things to a conclusion. Even if this was intentional, more could've been done there. Despite some of the cons, this is one of the most enjoyable adventure games I've played in a long time. One area I recommend for this game though is to play it using a pixel shader. The games visuals are already very polished, but a decent shader takes things to the next level. I initially played this using ScummVM through Retroarch using the Lottes Multipass CRT Shader and it looked stunning. The only down side was that the ScummVM profile for it wasn't bug free and there's a point later in the game where you need to type something in, and it wouldn't work. This has been resolved in the latest experimental branch of ScummVM, but that's a royal pain install manually for Retroarch (but it can be done), so I'm instead waiting on an official update in the Retroarch Core before giving it another try. ShaderGlass is also a good alternative as it supports Retroarch shaders and you can launch the game from Steam directly (instead of the Steam \ Common \ Strangeland.exe for ScummVM) and then overlay ShaderGlass. The inital set up has a bit of a steep learning curve, but the results will be well worth it. The latest version 1.3 is meant to render shaders even more accurately, and YouTube has a few tutorials to get things set up nicely.
Du grand art.
Bread, please!
Beautiful edition to the library of point and click games from Wormwood Studios truely a masterpiece in the genre short and sweet, doesnt overstay its welcome as the theme could get very overwhelming. puzzles are thematic have meaning and fun to workout you can tell they were play tested and polished(rare these days). At the start i could see this was going to be an exploration of ones mind on the level of Max payne and Alan wake and didnt disappoint in making me look inward and putting myself in the characters place.
Fantastic Artwork terrible story. Puzzles are either really easy or nonsensical.
Psychological horror games are fairly common in the current market, a theme once exclusive to survival horrors, nowadays, it has spread to cover multiple genres, from shooters to puzzle platformers, so of course it’s only natural that Point and Click adventures, a genre renowned for its storytelling capabilities, have more than one entry to discover One worthy of attention is Strangeland, a surreal nightmare journey through a twisted carnival created by a team of three people, it’s a Norse mythos-filled game with an obsession with metaphors and allegories, even saying so itself… It’s among the list of titles I would suggest to someone who may not see games as a medium to convey genuine prose … and overall just something I believe could be talked about more… Hear the rest on YouTube
