About

Dear Applicant,
I am pleased to offer you the role of Apprentice Thaumaturge at Strange Antiquities.
You show promise – a sharp mind and a strong stomach – exactly what this work demands. I need you to run the shop while I attend to other pressing matters. You will need a keen eye for detail as you provide the townsfolk of Undermere with occult objects for their arcane needs.
Undermere might seem unassuming at first – a serene little town on the edge of a grand lake. But it also sits at the edge of our world and the world beyond – and it falls on us to preserve reality’s frayed edge.
Permit me now to outline your duties – you’ll need to be up to speed from day one.

Every day, you will welcome new customers into the cosy, candle-lit interior of the shop. Their needs are unpredictable and often alarming, but never dull!
Study and Identify: Examine, identify and catalogue strange artefacts. Observation, deduction, and careful reference to our collection of illustrated tomes will serve you well. Mistakes can be… costly.
Help… Or Hinder: When dealing with powerful items, your choices matter. Will you help someone with their problem, or curse them with a horrid affliction? In a small town like this, people remember your misdeeds.
Explore and Discover: From time to time, you will have to leave the safety of the shop. Whether investigating rumours or retrieving artefacts, my well-loved hand-drawn maps will guide you to where you need to go.
Solve and Uncover: Your day-to-day might already feel like a puzzle, but this store holds many more. Few know how old this building is, and fewer still know what secrets lie within its walls.
Tending the Familiar: And, of course, Jupiter, the shop’s cat, demands daily affection. In return for his company, please oblige him with the occasional scratch behind the ears.

These ravens are an omen. There is a sickness in this town and I intend to investigate it.
Barton Potter told me that his bad eye has been aching again. That can’t be a good sign. And a creeping dark has set up in Jack Hungerford’s house. I have business in Ravenglass but I will consult with the occult scholar, Verona Green, before I leave.
There are always forces at play that would see our beloved Undermere unmade. We stand between them and the threshold. If events take a turn, you may be called upon to take a stand.

This shop is my life’s work. And, for the most part, it has been good to me. May it now offer you equal parts reward and mystery! But remember: some curiosities are best left untouched, and some visitors are not what they seem.
I look forward to your arrival.
Yours,
Eli White

We are two brothers from the UK who have been making games together for over a decade. In 2022, we released our occult puzzle game Strange Horticulture, and the response has been incredible; from amazing reviews and award nominations to appearing in numerous best-of-the-year lists. Most importantly, it has been a joy to read the kind words left by so many of our players on Steam, where we are still rated Overwhelmingly Positive after close to 12,000 reviews!
Strange Antiquities is not a sequel, not a direct one, at least. You’ll see some familiar faces, and maybe some plants will pop up, but it’s a brand new story. If you have a fondness for Strange Horticulture and the dark, but welcoming world we’ve created, know that you’ll feel right at home.
We want to thank everyone who has played Strange Horticulture, left us a review, told their friends, or supported the game in any way. It has been an amazing journey and we can't wait to share the next chapter with you.
Many thanks,
Rob & John

You know... I'm gonna say it. Not as good as Strange Horticulture. There are so many plates to spin that sometimes the puzzles feel less like something to solve and more like making a poorly educated guess until you hit the right item. Especially before you unlock the lens, which...
the first few times I clicked on the flower amulet, nothing changed about it so I assumed I'd have to get something else to make it fit later. It only took until I was physically unable to progress the game before I looked it up, clearly missing something, and realized it just hadn't worked when I tried it before.
So you can go several in-game days without having the tools necessary to even guess at certain puzzles just because the controls occasionally don't trigger properly. That feels kinda bad and isn't a problem I had with Strange Horticulture. THAT BEING SAID. Despite my gripes with it, I still think it's a game well worth playing. You might need to take a break from it when it pisses you off, but the story is good and the puzzles that work REALLY work. Plus the art is much improved from SH and god is it beautiful. Same style as SH but with more polish.
Such a cute original concept that keeps you wanting more! Love it sm. Definitely a good game for you if you love a little solo whimiscal game to work on.
I love everything about this game. I love the unique premise and how well it delivers on it. I love the brooding, mysterious atmosphere and story. I loved puzzling over all the little strange and fascinating objects you slowly collect and learning about each one. If you like solving puzzles and uncovering occult lore, play this. But get Strange Horticulture too and play that one first!
I absolutely love how cozy this game was I started playing it at 8 and before I knew it, it was 1 in the morning.
Excellent. If there ever is another installment in this series, I'll definitely be back for it.
This was such a fun game! Highly recommend
The genre-defining investigative first-person thinker and study-'em-up returns! That's referring to Strange Horticulture, in case you were wondering. A similarly calm, intriguing, sometimes ominous and engagingly cerebral game which shares a minor link to this one, mainly in its setting. So then, you may ask: Does one need to play the other game first? The answer is no; this one is quite self-contained and does not expect you to remember a bunch of things from the previous one. The gameplay consists, quite unusually, of listening to people, looking at unusual objects and examining them in a number of other ways, as well as taking mental notes (or scribbling notes on the label of each item, if you like). You then look through the body of information contained in your book(s), which tends to be reasonably concise and sometimes outright minimal; draw conclusions and form hypotheses based on what you know about the object and its known characteristics, as well as the context, any relevant illustrations, in some cases even visiting a relevant location to fill in some of the blanks. Ring the bell, and a customer enters; find the mystical object they request, or process more vague requests into a recommendation, or - in certain cases - decide which of two objects to use. You can assign a color, a shape, a symbol, and some writing to each object's label to help you organize your collection. You can explore the surrounding town based on various clues and tips you may receive over the course of a given day. This in turn tends to yield new artifacts, or information about the ones you have (or may later obtain). Your decisions at the branching choice moments will shape the story to some extent, in simple little ways or in dramatic, tragic or catastrophic ones. I would heartily recommend this game as a lovely contrast to the many games concerned with constant, tireless activity, as well as the games where you largely switch your brain off and run on instinct. It's nice to flex the mental muscles from time to time. Nice to puzzle over tricky problems, riddles and vague clues, have your eureka moments and deduce where to go, or what to do, with limited information. A little like those escape rooms that some people enjoy - or video games like the Zero Escape series which involve the aforementioned. So... yeah. Give it a try if you're in the market for something a little different, a little less hectic, while still engaging, loaded with stakes and tension and curious things to discover. And an adorable kitty to scratch.
Among puzzle games, I would say this is quite challenging. Moody, dark, and intriguing. Atmosphere and immersion is top-notch.
