Oh super cute! The graphics are pretty, game mechanics are enjoyable, (lots of powerups etc.) and I just adore the background music like soft strings from old-world European times. The "save this village" story line keeps the same-ol match 3 concept more engaging than just clearing boards for no reason at all.
Honestly, I preferred the first one. The Good: I like that I can play on casual difficulty without time or move limits. this is one of very few games that I can play when I don't want to have to try hard. When I'm tired or just overstimulated and I don't want any kind of challenge but I still want to play a video game then this is perfect, just match at my own pace and zone out. But the first game has this as well without the punishing mechanics in the bad section below. This game has additional game modes like jigsaw puzzles and find the item, which are okay I suppose. They break up the gameplay a bit, but I would prefer if they were a separate game mode in the menu with their own progression rather than randomly interspersed. That way I could choose to play that mode, rather than have it sprung on me when I might not be in the mood for it. I also, like that you can choose to skip these levels because some people may not want to play them, also there is no negative consequences for skipping those sections. Overall I do like the ethos that the Storm Tale games let you play as slowly and methodically as you want to, or add difficulty if you prefer it. The Bad: I don't like that the majority of levels are actually three separate boards. So when you complete the board you get a nice animation and all the explosive items trigger just like the first game, but you actually need to swipe over to another, and sometimes yet another board, to complete the level. It takes the pleasure of completing away completely and there's no knowing when you select to play how many boards are in that level. I only ever enjoy the first one, the subsequent ones feel like I was tricked into playing them. In the first game (and most games) that 'just one more' is what keeps me playing, with this set up I feel anxious about starting another level and I don't get the satisfaction of finishing a level. When it's finally complete I feel... relieved more than anything, I guess? It might make sense if the board above dropped into the board below or was otherwise connected somehow but it's actually just three separate boards. Why? So overall, I don't think this adds much that is worth having over the first game
Cloud saves do not work. Went to a different computer and my profile was not there, as if I had not started (I had played 45 levels). Good match 3 game. The achievements have all unlocked normally, so far. I had an achievement scare though. When I went back to the first computer, the progress of the not-yet-unlocked achievements appeared to have been reset to the levels from the first 14-levels of the game, from playing those (again) on the second computer. However, the progress corrected as I played levels 46 on, on the first computer. You will need 90+ levels for all achievements. There are 100 levels and you can replay any after the 100th.
This game has more interesting gameplay than the first one in this series and I enjoyed playing it very much. There were a couple of things I'd improve, but neither was a deal-breaker. One is that the voiceovers are at a lower volume than the background sounds, so it's hard to hear what's being said. The VR effect when you buy a building was very nice, but it goes away after you click on the screen to return to the game and you can't get back to it to look around at what you have built. The storyline is similar in both games and not the reason I play it. It's great fun to make explosions all over the place with the powerups, which are easy to earn. I play in relaxed mode in all games and the challenge level in this one was just right for me -- not boring and not frustrating. Overall, I think it's worth buying and playing and I'm glad I got it on sale, because I like it so much. I'll probably replay it again from time to time.
I loved the first game and probably would love this one as well if it didn't crash alot. In a half hour of gameplay I had the game crash twice on me which makes it impossible to get the playing 25 levels in a row achievement. I am sure this game is just as fun as the first one, probably even more so. I loved the idea of two boards being played at once. I am extremely disappointed I couldn't get this game to not stop crashing.
