The first thing I thought when I saw this game was, “wow, is that a cool concept or what!” Like, even before playing it I had to give it style points for being something so different and interesting. Being able to play a cave painting is something so amazing that I went in completely excited for what I was getting into. And, I am happy to say, this game lived up to that excitement completely! The turn-based battle system is both enjoyable and challenging, having a lot of details that really elevate the gameplay. You get to choose your abilities for yourself and your animal companions as you raise your stats, and these are used during battle by spending either SP or TP depending on the ability, SP being something that has to be replenished through items and TP being something that fills up as you attack enemies. Where your enemies are on the field changes what attacks they can use and what attacks you can use on them in turn. All of this means that a lot of thought goes into fights, both before and during your battles, which I absolutely love. Explaining it surely makes it sound like a lot to take in, but trust me when I say it’s really fun. It’s also great that Stories in Stone takes time to discuss individualism vs. collectivism. Your character is learning about where he fits in and how he can be both a part of a tribe as well as his own person. This is presented both through dialogue as well as in the core gameplay, with you choosing what materials to keep for yourself as well as what you can give to your people. And going back to the dialogue, it can get very deep and thoughtful, but they are talked about in a way that never becomes pretentious. It’s very refreshing to see a game not only present material like this, but do so in a way that people without degrees in psychology could appreciate it and not feel lost. And this may be something small, but I love that talking to people each day changes their dialogue. I don’t really have any in-depth analysis here; I just like it, haha. All-in-all there is so much to appreciate here, from the concept itself to the finished project. This is a very unique, wonderful game. I have yet to play 16-Bit-Psych’s previous game, To Ash, but after playing this I’m looking forward to it even more. I'm writing this review as the first impressions I had from the game so far. In Spears in Stone, you play as a hunter of a nomad clan in search of resources like meat, water and materials. For that, you and your wolf partner will explore from north to south and from east to west to hunt and kill wild animals in a turn-based RPG system. I like the way you already start with a good amount of skills and abilities, so you can already trace different combat strategies. They've focused on the stance of the enemies, where if they're too close to you, they will deal more damage but be more exposed to your attacks; at the same time if they're too far, they won't deal as much damage but can easily evade your strikes, which I found it interesting. Here's a little tip: you'll start with some attacks that can push your enemies or bring them closer to you, and you'll also have a spirit skill that affects everyone who's in the same stance. That means if you're combating two or more animals, you can just pull or push them in order to place them in the same column and, in the next turn, use this skill to strike all of them at the same time! The art is not just nice, but it's the core identity of the game that makes it stand out from others. So if you're a enthusiastic of distant past conflicts, you'll find it pretty attractive! The soundtrack is plain and simple, but it's not necessary a bad thing. It's just enough to keep you engaged on the game. Overall, from what I've seen until now, I do recommend playing it. You know how hard an indie developer's life is, as they usually spend years to create a game like this one and usually gets unoticed on Steam. So if you're willing to take it a try, please make sure to support them!
Good graphics, hand drawn characters, fun music and, decent story. You'll feel like a kid again playing this, I did. Reminds me of when I played games like Secret of Mana. Thank you for a good game sir!
After receiving an early opportunity to play through Stories in Stone in it's entirety, I can recommend it to anyone interested in classic jrpg's. The stylized visuals are very fitting for the time period the game is set in and as a jrpg veteran myself , I clocked in at around 10 hours to complete. The story moves at a brisk pace and doesn't out stay it's welcome. At no point did I feel any new area or obstacle dragged and new locales had the variety to keep the entire experience fresh. The enemy variety was also plentiful which helped keep the battles interesting. Speaking of the battle system, it utilizes multiple resource pools along with many types of attacks and abilities which allow the player to try plenty of different tactics. One of the unique tactics is a feature to push or pull enemies into three different lanes on the battle field, which change what attacks they're capable of as well as how much damage or evasion they output. Along side the choice of abilities is also the choice to build your party members how you see fit with various items which directly impact their stat points, both in terms of standard jrpg equipment and items found in the field. When exploring the various locations, you can see the enemies on screen and decide whether or not to engage which is great for those searching for upgrades and not interested in fighting. Of course better rewards are often guarded by foes, however you can still maneuver around them using an expendable dash meter. This dash meter serves another unique purpose as well, in that you can run into smaller animals that serve as your prey and offer you a different way to heal on the fly by catching and eating them. All in all, Stories in Stone is your standard jrpg adventure with plenty of unique features to allow it to feel new and worth checking out.
