Stellar Wanderer DX, is a space sim game that kind of mimics space sims out there but does it at a way that's clunky and unintuitive. On top of that the npc dps is higher than that of the player starter ship . This forces the player only into fighting and still with a high chance of losing. You can't out run enemy npc ships because your thrust is cut down so you can't . Again their dps is high and they have some type of aim assist so barrel rolls or other things will not shake them. They'll blow your ship if you run. That being said its not a "wanderer" type game its a dog fighting game with economy included. Most the story is combat. I really wanted to like this one but seeing as how i can't get past the story or into a better ship with out hours of grinding I will have to rate this down. If the economy was worth it , i would not. Even the economy is not worth it 5 coins to kill an enemy some low ♥♥♥♥ for ore. The whole point of playing a game is the enjoyment of relaxing ♥♥♥♥ to do not forcing the player into a certain box.
Elite Dangerous player here. If you are into fast paced combat with a low barrier of entry, this is good. Devs are responsive as well. Overall, this scratches that nostalgic itch and if the devs can implement co-op, it would be chef's kiss. Looking forward to more updates. Worth picking up.
Not worth the $30 I paid. It's very basic and repetitive, as noted in other reviews. Limited controls, hud functionality and content. The same enemies every time appearing out of nowhere. Even on hard it's not a challenge. Small maps. Easy to obtain the ships & upgrades. Fun for an indie game but not worth the money. It pointed me back to Freelancer which I'm enjoying much more even after all these years.
I’ve only put a little over 20hrs into the game so far, but for what it’s worth, here are my thoughts. 1) Is Stellar Wanderer DX the Freelancer of 2026? In a way, perhaps. However, there is not as much freedom of play that was found in Freelancer. I had thousands of hours in Freelance and in fact still have it installed on my PC. Granted, with Freelancer, the level of enjoyment was dictated partly by the server(s) you played on, but it did give you more freedom of action. Could SWDX become that, I think yes, but time will tell. 2) Does SWDX provide a good “bang for the buck”? To answer that, I would preface by saying that for me, I want to experience at least one hour of enjoyment for each dollar spent on a game. With that was a foundation, I would say that SWDX is good, but not amazing. To obtain the ship/equipment/weapons you need to accomplish the progression of mission difficulty, it can be a grind. 3) Would SWDX benefit from some tweaks? Absolutely! a - Allow players to opt to not take a mission and come back to it later. b - Increase the variety of drops from antagonists. c - Add a different ‘fast travel’ mechanism, like the jump lanes in Freelancer. All in all, would I recommend Stellar Wanderer DX? In all honesty, yes, but I think there is a lot of room for improvement. It’s fun, don’t misunderstand me, but it’s grindy and repetitive. I’d give it a 6/10
Leider keine Kaufempfehlung. Daumen runter, ganz weit runter.
I wish that Steam would have a neutral recommendation option by now, but there is not. When you start out playing it is indeed a good game and i have to say that there are no bugs that i encountered. But after a while flying from base to base, killing pirates and running some missions, that is about it. I find for a space game that after about 1 or 2 hours, the gameplay becomes boring. It is all rinse and repeat the same missions. It is kill some pirate lord here, escort some ship, transport some people, check out some checkpoints for pirates and racing. That is about it. I have to give credit for the dogfights and space flight being very good and fun to play, but the rest is just plain boring. Sorry for that. I can recommend the game for the exploration and dogfights, but otherwise no recommendation. So unless there are going to be some expansions to the game or more variations in the missions, i cannot recommend this game at this price point. I can only recommend it if there is a very good sale/discount, otherwise there are better games available.
Boring and repetitive. Has some nice parts - like ships and equipments slots and types, but overall it's just same few activities you have to repeat all the time, fighting, mining and boring flights with stops for boring fighting. Exploration is useless - every system is a single station and a lot of meaningless objects. I get that it's an indie game, I don't expect cutscenes or nice UI, but heck every "protect the ship" quests has same ship captain in it. Main story is some variation of repetative quests without any story behind it, at least I wasn't patient enough to get to a point where it might become interesting
Y'know, a neutral vote would have been good to have. Product was received for free in a giveaway from the ΔV guys. Stellar Wanderer DX is a good coffee-break of a space simulator remastered by Dream Builder Studios to fill in the Galaxy on Fire/Freelancer void. It comes with HOTAS support and a cockpit view feature (you start in 3rd-person but can switch it if preferred) which makes it a good space dogfighting simulator if you're in the mood for some space combat. It is also a remaster of a mobile game released around 2015, with vastly-overhauled graphics and systems that make it a good PC game.
In a galaxy, far far away
Stellar Wanderer tasks you in the role of a nameless space pilot plying trades across the various sectors of the galaxy. You can trade, mine, fly around and kill targets and sometimes sell unsavory cargo. You can also take on missions on the game's many space stations which run the whole gamut of patrolling the sector, defending helpless ships, routing passengers to their destination and what not. The game also features a sizeable main story mission, but it's not long enough in general and not too interesting. The game boasts multiple amounts of equipment you can buy, but quite a bit of them are just stat stick versions of previous equipment but with better stats. There is also a leveling system that becomes rather grindy later on which you can use to give percentile buffs to ship performance.
Compounding debts
As it stands, it is pretty much like the era of 2010's mobile space sim releases, with many interesting systems making for an enjoyable game, but not exceeding beyond its merits. Despite the game having large cargo bay fighters, there is no bulk-selling feature; you have to manually tap away at the sell/buy buttons to load them into your ship. The trading system is rather rudimentary, and even viewing where the highest/lowest purchase price sectors for items is a challenge in and of itself as you have to apprise through many sectors to do your trades if you want. You are asked to select a class long before you can figure out what stats exactly do. EXP Gains on that regard are rather slow as well. Dogfighting is rather minimal, with many enemy ships just flying straight at you then running a certain distance before repeating their strikes again. As mentioned, a lot of the equipment is just the previous kind of equipment, except slightly better. The music becomes rather grating at some point; I had to disable it because it was too loud and it was also a bunch of space orchestra strings. The voice-acting could use some work, but then again this WAS a mobile game made for the 2015s, which is par for the course of games of that era (e.g. Galaxy on Fire 2, etc.)
Compounding gains
In spite of that, if you like collecting, there's a sizeable roster of ships, though I doubt you'd use most of them given that the BL5 is in general a great ship with 4 equipment slots and 4 weapon slots. The game's difficulty curve is noticeably more gentle than the "better" game counterpart Everspace 2, which was basically Borderlands in Space on that regard where you have to luck out on a piece of equipment, and then cry when your levels also invalidate your equipment because of the fact that the pirates have become way stronger than you could handle. As it is an adaptation of a mobile game, the specs required are criminally low. Any modern computer and even potatoes can run this at 200+ FPS. If you are running it at those specs, turn your VSync off; you don't need it.
Verdict
If you have money to burn, this is hardly a problematic purchase; you can get some enjoyment out of this so long as you pace yourself. If you want, and if it were up to me, I'd wait for a 25% sale. If you wanted to do trade, consider getting either X3 or X4 (if you have a stronger PC), where you have more effect in controlling the functional marketplace there, or if you wanted to dogfight with better graphics, get Everspace 2, but that game has its own issues as well, including the fact it uses UE5. If you wanted more Galaxy on Fire 2, and you already bought that game, this game works just as well if not better. If you wanted a numerical point reference, I'd give this game a 6.5/10, where 10 is perfect, 1 is atrociously horrible and 5 is normal.
It's Ok, It is super repetitive with NPC combat. it feels exactly 10 or so many minutes apart and the same couple types of fights so it just gets annoying fast. It feels a lot like some older space sim games so it's worth a try but it got boring fast.
