Its a good idea, but its very underdeveloped right now. I know this probably isn't a fair comparison, but shut up and keep reading: The stage this game is currently at is probably the rough outline Notch had in his head when he first started making Minecraft. A good idea, but this should not have been released yet. There's no tutorial, no guide or anything. It just kinda throws you in with a bunch of blocks and some engine stuff I don't understand and is just like "Go nuts." Which I would do if I knew what the hell anything did. Short version of this: Don't get it yet. Wait for maybe another 6 months and see what happens.
If you want to design block-like vehicles and test your builds to fruition and without having a dumb computer hovering over you the entire time you enjoy wrecking havoc, this game could be up your alley! If block-like vehicle creativity isn't your thing, I suggest otherwise. As of 3/3/2020, this is my basic review of the game! I will update this as I play after any updates have been made, things adjusted, etc. So far, this is really interesting and definitely good for a basic engineer of any level. Even though this is a newly added game, there's not too much about it that can be purely novice friendly. Here's my list of PROs and CONs. PROs: This game can get addicting! For sandbox games, this is definitely critical. This is a very creative sandbox game, specifically designed with building vehicles and gadget-like contraptions. There's a playing field for testing and making your own destructive vehicle. So many ways of going about it, and making controls so unique that you can make the craziest vehicle with as many control keys as you want. Your limit of what you can do is basically what you can think of, really. Building things in this game is like a puzzle. It either works or it doesn't work at all. The base game is FREE! CONs: The game lacks various instructions for basic crafting of any vehicle(when I started the game, I wasn't left with any tutorial or manual.) No customization options in terms of possibly re-coloring or changing visible design from the default Gold-looking color. No undo/redo options for accidental deleting or modification of parts. Not many options for part selections. Only land-based and air-based vehicles are the only current choices. Couldn't figure out some of the part's uses properly(some of the gears, and the motors seem off from their uses. couldn't build a decently turning vehicle even if I had the wheels turning in opposite directions. some builds would try to turn the actual vehicle itself or not be latched on the vehicle itself.) As this game stands as a fresh release, most of the CONs are basically and more than likely gonna be changed as patches would be released. I perfectly understand this, I will update this review as I try the newer patches, and I personally hope to see updates in the future for this one! Basic Overall Score: 6.5/10 The potential I see in this game in future updates: 9.5/10 I don't immediately recommend criticizing this game this early on, and just give this game plenty of time to flourish.

Game shows potential, early days. Some recommendations would be to set default keys for items and then allow customisation. As an example set W, D or up and down arrows for movement of motors. Also difficult to see without testing which hydraulic items have a vertical rotation versus horizontal rotation. Can't wait for a multiplayer version.

Steampunk Genius is barely a game, it's a 3D voxel-esque construction kit. You get a bunch of building blocks and snap them together to create a wacky brass Steampunk themed vehicle. Then you can test drive your vehicle in a sandbox arena. That's all the gameplay there is, so I guess this is as much of a game as driving down to the shops to buy a loaf of bread. It's highly unpolished, the art assets are low poly, with low resolution textures. It's confusing and badly needs a UI overhaul and a solid tutorial. There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Games don't exist in a vaccuum... you can play Robocraft for free, and not only does that have a better vehicle building system, proper UI, all the normal PC gaming tweaks and so on, you can do more than just drive in a sandpit, you can take part in huge PvP battles with the vehicles you make. It's hard to suggest anyone should bother with this in the light of the competition. The game is completely free. This is noble a gesture that shows dedication to both gamers, and the gaming industry. Nothing speaks more to a developers belief in themselves and their product than making their game available for everyone without remuneration. It's a shame in this case that the implementation is below the minimum standards a dedicated PC game should offer to enthusiasts. There's no "maybe" option in Steam, unfortunately, but I hope to see more work from this developer, perhaps as part of a professional game development company that can make full use of their talents without needing to make budget/quality compromises.
