You are early man. Taking the role of a young tribesman in an Antediluvian (Pre-Flood) world whose dangers you yet know nothing about, you must learn to harness fire, fur and flint to battle the enemies that will line your path while questioning beliefs for humanity’s salvation.
Introduction
State of Extinction is developed and published by Stone Pixel Games LLC. Since it’s their first Steam project and within Early Access stage to boot, I shall consider this a preview rather than fully fledged review. Alas, I shall judge it by the same standard I use, in regards to my reviewed video games.
Gameplay
Fetch quests. This is the phrase which seems to describe the vast majority of time you shall spend in State of Extinction. Even if I am a history buff, I can accept some…artistic liberties undertaken by those which try to make history more digestible for the masses. History has little to do with truth, since it is always manipulated by those which control power under its many forms. And yet fiction it is not. The game I’m analyzing today? It brings together both hominids and dinosaurs within the same time frame. Dinosaurs existed during Mesozoic Era (250 to 65 million years ago) while hominids (early humans) did not evolve from primates until about 3 million years ago. The latest stages of evolution, ♥♥♥♥ sapiens and ♥♥♥♥ neanderthalensis not appearing until about 200,000 years ago. I mentioned those two since even within this game, the “valley of Neander” is referenced by some of the NPCs, yet it is debatable how closely did these subspecies interact. History lesson’s over though. State of Extinction at first glance seems like a generic role playing game and since it’s still in Early Access, I guess I’ve seen less than half of what it promises to show upon the full release. I could only select one of the three tribes available when you start a new game. The Tribe of the Wolf. Not much to spoil regarding the story or characters since it plays all too familiar. A coming-of-age tale, perhaps used also as an allegory to the human evolution at that early stage. You are a warrior which must learn to adapt to your surroundings, craft weaponry and tools and even barter from time to time for basic resources. But you can forage plenty by yourself while you’re out fulfilling another repetitive fetch quest. You will eventually prove your worth to the tribe elders and “level up” through Intellect Points that function like classic experience gain in most RPGs. I couldn’t really say you’re becoming overpowered too fast since at the very start of the game you’ll be mostly running away from threats, rather than facing them head on. Basically, if you get attacked by not one but two dire wolves or bears at the same time, you’re better off reloading a save before they certainly maul you into a tasty snack. I think we can rephrase that as “unbalanced difficulty”. Ideas were fine, but the way they are implemented is not helped in any way by the rather limited selection of audiovisual assets. Yes, even the sounds are repetitive and “character dialogues” are little more than a few growls that are somehow subtitled into coherence. Fully 3D environment but the Store Page official screenshots do not really reflect what you’re playing. A barely functioning control scheme doesn’t improve the situation either. Keyboard is there, supported but rarely used since you can get by, simply using the mouse.
Pros
+ Interesting setting and characters, even if not historically accurate + Shows potential once it leaves Early Access + Steam Achievements.
Cons
- Simplistic and occasionally unresponsive control scheme - Overpriced - Repetitve gameplay and sounds - No Steam Trading Cards
Result / Final thoughts
I didn’t expect State of Extinction to be as polished as Far Cry Primal (obvious budget differences) but I did wish it would have been less phantasmagoric and dreary at the same time. If someone who takes a fringe interest in this prehistoric period got so bored by it, I cannot fathom what someone who’s completely clueless about early humans, might consider of this title. Just another fairy tale? Unacceptable. Don't waste your money on this game. It looks interesting, but the game is not at all fun. Fetch quests where the items are not able to be found at times. Minimal combat. Hunting is a joke. Plus the game seems to have been completely abbandoned by the devs. No updates in months. Save your money. Don't buy this game. It's a shame, really. This game had potential.
State of Extinction -
State of Extinction. What can I say? I had high hopes for this game. While they weren't shattered, they have reached levels as obtainable as the max flying height of penguins, (spoiler alert: penguins dont fly). First, let me just say, that I can overlook a lot of bugs/issues that come with any alpha/beta game that is released regardless of its closed/open state. Havins said that, be aware that, like many alphas, betas, and even final releases, State of extinction does mave many bugs/issues. Clicking issues, which this game is very dependant upon mouse clicks, less keyboard imput, definitely exist. The mini-map for me is a very big issue. Its a static map, but many times, while I am heading in, what I believe to be northeasterly direction, the mini-map shows me heading somewhere completely different. I could be more forgiving of this if the directions it said were opposite of where I could see myself going, unfortunately it didnt even seem that way. There is not even an indicator on the mini-map giving you a clue as to which way the mini-map believes is north. The good news is, the landscape doesnt change, so there is an option to turn off the mini-map, which I recommend given its current awful state. Graphics look like they were pulled from a freeware/shareware database. Forgivable, I suppose. But given how much more advanced we have become technologically since the 90's, I expected more/better. So to me, it seems lazy to go with half-assed graphics. While I can forgive lack-luster graphics and some bugs and/or issues, For me story line needs to be not just compelling, but strong. Initially, the storyline is compelling, but as you progress, you find a lot of filler, that doesnt really seem to lead to a better story so far. The dialogue is the worst for me. Every audible dialogue is, "blah blah blah, bblah bla, blah, blah, bla". Seriously, the audio provided is some one mumbling, and not even kind of english. It is deliberately not intended to be comprehensible. They didnt even have the decency to try to make a pretend primitive language and have voice actors do their jobs. While this may have been done to save money, it almost completely destroys any chance for immersion. The written dialogue isn't a whole lot better. Its almost as if they hired a screenwritter to write how primitive people would have talked, and he looked at native american tribes, and studied that half-assed, and then wrote with that limited knowledge. Sometimes its hard to even understand what they are trying to say because of the cryptic way they try to write. I fear that this will create a lot of issues with younger players who see what potential the game does have. My last issue is with the quest log. Its very frustrating to be told, "You need to go make something. To do that, you will need to get this and that. So you leave the game for whatever reason. You come back later, dont recall what you needed to gather, so you open you questlog, and bam! It tells you you need to make this item, but not what you need to gather. At his time, and I dont know if this is planned to be included later or not, there is no way to remove a quest and restart it. See the potential issues? I personally couldn't recommend anyone purchase this game at this time. I will come back and play this game in a year, after there have been hopefully 10-15 updates to fix many of the issues, and, again hopefully, they will have used some of the money obtained by early backers to actually improve and fix the game from its current state.
Really nice game !!! The game is a top down view, post humanity era game. The very first tribemen. The game's artistic design is a lot more impressive than the game engine, but since the design is so great it makes the game very immersive and true to humanity's beginnings !! There is a real sense of progression with harvesting, scavenging, crafting and growing smarter and stronger through time, kinda like a rpg. I really recommend this game if u are looking for something refreshing and unique, you wont be disapointed. At least, i am not. Also the dialogues are great and you want to read them and know more about that era, of our humanity.
For a "new take on your traditional role playing game", this pretty much feels like a conventional RPG with fantasywords for established terms. The Gameplay is not that different from many other Hack-and-Slay-RPG's, except for the crafting maybe, which is a mechanic very fitting for the setting. Other than that, the narrative is somewhat bland, terms like "calling" for your character or "howling" for your overall goal feel more forced than anything and will be very frustrating in the game's tutorial, as you don't just have to learn the game's mechanics, but also guess what everything stands for. The soundtrack ranges from acceptable to immersive, the soundeffects are okay. The Voiceacting for the cavemen, as well as in the introduction, is absolutely terrible. While the narrator in the beginning sounds like somebody doing their best "old-lady"-voice, the mumbling of the cavemen will tear your best efforts of immersion apart. Graphicswise, I am not a fan either. I know this is a mature RPG. but why does everything look like bubblegloop swamp from banjo-kazooie? Where are the lush, green woods and wild plants? How about some colour? Or if you want to talk maturity, how about some gore or bloodtrails, not just vapourizing red mist? How can I honour killed animals if I club them to death and leave them in the field? And why do I honour a deer-corpse by adding berries to the meal? And the pricing is a stretch, to say the least. This is early access, and a (I hope) far from finished indietitle. For the content, moreover the technical status of the game, this should be 8-10 Euros tops.
I'M A STEGOSAURUS

I write journal entries for my website http://moco.net for all kinds of games, this next Single hour of playtime, Journal Entry is below ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let me just say, that State of Extinction is a newly launched Early Access game, and is currently available on Steam. What I talk about now could and In my opinion will definitely change in time. That is why I write Journal entries, to kind of document it. Please enjoy the impression. ss1‘ State of Extinction ‘ is an early access game by Stone Pixel Games. SoE is also an isometric, survival type of game and was released on November 29th, 2016. Games like these usually take on first person point of views, so it’s refreshing to see a company try something new. For this Journal entry, my playtime was a little over an hour. In SoE you still search for materials, explore, and craft items like it’s peers. But here, here you do it all the while traversing a lush green forest/jungle themed area. So pretty much there isn’t too much of a difference, except it’s caveman-esque period. At the start you are given a choice of three different classes, Instinct, Intuition, and Intelligence. The ‘Instinct’ class is the strong ‘Warrior’ type, ‘Intuition’ an Assassin type that can set traps, and last ‘Intelligence’, the Sorcerer. I chose the Instinct class, but I didn’t play long enough to get a grasp on what he could do. When you are choosing your class, you can also set a mode that gives you just one life, and if you die, your character is deleted. Diablo fans rejoice. State of Extinction The story starts out with a Bible tone that quickly gives way to a story about the coming of age. You and your rival Kaar, are to take a test to pass into manhood. During the tutorial phase you learn of the test, and meet Kaar’s instructor, who teaches all kinds of great survival lessons. Again, I only played an hour of the game so I didn’t get much farther than that. Once in the game you are put through a lengthy tutorial that was actually fun to play, unlike most games where you are just dying just to pass it get. You will learn the basics to survive, first thing is getting a weapon in your hands by collecting a branch, and crafting it. Learning to craft an actual useful weapon you can use comes later as does learning how to heal. That’s my first experience of playing ‘State of Extinction‘ Overall it was a fun one. In my next Journal Entry I’ll write more about of the story, music, graphics, and of course most importantly in my opinion, GAME PLAY. 3/5 “Takes an increasingly crowded survival game genre and has it’s own unique take on it”
