*Starry Nights: Helix* presents itself as a side-scrolling shoot-’em-up that blends retro aesthetics with an anime-styled storyline, but the result is a game that feels more like an outline than a fully realized experience. Its opening moments set the tone immediately: a simple everyday scene involving a cancelled school day abruptly gives way to a surreal level filled with floating characters and dinosaurs. This jarring transition isn’t a one-off quirk but an early sign of the game’s narrative fragmentation. Throughout the adventure, cutscenes appear with stiff pacing and a translation that often borders on nonsensical, leaving character motivations unclear and emotional beats hollow. While the developers clearly aimed for a whimsical, dramatic tale involving multiple protagonists and their relationships, the lack of narrative cohesion or proper localization drains these moments of impact, turning what should be meaningful story segments into confusing interludes between levels. The core gameplay, though functional, feels rooted in the most basic elements of the shoot-’em-up formula without offering meaningful evolution or challenge. The player moves horizontally, fires continuously, dodges enemy projectiles, and progresses through themed stages. Yet these encounters lack rhythm or escalation; enemy patterns rarely demand finesse, and difficulty spikes are more arbitrary than skill-based. Each level unfolds with the same predictable structure, making progression feel repetitive rather than exciting. There are boss encounters, but even these lack memorable mechanics or standout designs. Instead of building tension with elaborate attack cycles or unique hazards, they often resort to simple projectile spam or unimaginative attack loops that become dull long before they become challenging. The game’s roster of playable characters initially suggests variety, but this diversity is more cosmetic than mechanical. Although each protagonist has a distinct look and a few unique animations, their actual performance in combat remains largely identical. Special abilities or signature attacks fail to offer strategic depth or meaningful differentiation, making character selection feel like little more than a change in portrait. This lack of gameplay contrast undermines one of the game’s advertised strengths, further contributing to the sense that the experience never truly rises above its baseline mechanics. Visually, *Starry Nights: Helix* employs a mishmash of art styles that never quite harmonize. The player characters are depicted with a pixel-art sensibility, yet many enemies and backgrounds appear as vaguely cel-shaded or oddly compressed hand-drawn assets that clash with the rest of the presentation. The creature designs themselves — including cactus men, robots, and even holiday-themed teddy bears — are whimsical but contextless, leaving them feeling random rather than charming. Instead of a cohesive or imaginative world, the visual design feels like a patchwork of unrelated ideas, none of them developed enough to leave a strong impression. The sound design and pacing do little to elevate the experience. Music loops are serviceable but rarely memorable, and sound effects lack the punch or clarity that would make the shooting feel satisfying. The overall tempo of the game often feels strangely muted; even moments that should feel dramatic or climactic unfold with the same subdued energy, preventing the game from achieving momentum or excitement. Without dynamic audio or compelling audio cues, the action lacks the visceral quality that makes shooters feel engaging. Despite its shortcomings, *Starry Nights: Helix* is not without potential appeal. Its low price makes it accessible to players who enjoy light, uncomplicated shooters or who simply want something brief and easy to complete. There’s a certain novelty to its surreal mixture of characters and stages, and the short playtime makes it possible to clear in a single sitting without feeling burdened. However, these qualities are more incidental than intentional; they stem from the game’s simplicity rather than from thoughtful design. Ultimately, *Starry Nights: Helix* is a modest and unambitious title that never attempts to push the shoot-’em-up genre forward or even refine its most common traits. It functions, it moves, it fires, and it ends — but it rarely captivates or entertains along the way. It offers enough harmless content to pass a bit of time, but not enough personality, polish, or depth to linger in memory. For those who enjoy exploring small indie curiosities or who appreciate lightweight shooters with a surreal edge, it may hold some fleeting charm. For most players, however, it remains a quickly forgettable footnote in a genre defined by far more exciting and refined experiences. Rating: 5/10
+ The artstyle is the best thing on this game - The character's movement, it's too fast - Too much visual effects - Unbalanced difficulty curve in stages (The difficulty spike from Stage 1 to Stage 2 is too much)
disclaimer : I give no recommendation to the game that is unplayable only (game crash too much , long hour save file is broken or anything that prevent you to finish the game). I did not see how "recommendation or not" reflect that game enough. it's even worst that score system your better off watch first impression or read review summary instead. First impression: +Nice character design both Main character and enemy +Nice background art +Nice looking bullet hell , an eye candy +Cathcy bgm - why start in widow mode with low resolutin ???? in-game graphic resolution setting can done after character selection only ??? why?? - tutorial is not that good - it's controller support but it need more indicator for joy controller. indicator for which bottun do which only for key board. player can see and adjust joy controller in option, though. -visual and sound feed back when got hit is too low and lack rumble feedback for joy controller too. -/+ I still only play 2 level so I don't know much about their lv. design but so far seem to be on casual side. - ranking still bug , I can't open it edit : - give me motion sickness , I normally get this sympton when play top down bullet hell in my opnion , this is medicore bullet hell game at it's best
shoot em up retro bir yapım yani ne bilim oynanış kolay da yetişkin birini sarmaz be atari salonunda oynanan cinsten
