As a disclaimer, I should state that not only did I receive this game for free, but I also have very little experience in SHUMPs (anyone remember 1942 in the arcade? That's my experience level heh). You know how it is, some games just aren't your personal style. So when asked to review this game I was a little hesitant, knowing my lack of experience or interest in SHUMPs. But once I got into the game, I found that the experience was quite enjoyable. Actually my first play didn't go too well, but then I plugged in a controller and turned the difficulty down one notch to 'easy' and I found myself flying through space blasting away baddies as if I'd been playing SHUMPS for ages. The controls for the game are very tight and I found the 'drift' feature an interesting little twist on what I remember from SHUMPs. Between levels the ability to upgrade and customize your fighter was a nice twist, and I could imagine that if I was into these styles of games, as I got more into the game, I'd really appreciate the customizability of the between level shops. I ended my playthrough at level three, and have to say the highlight was the ‘boss battle’ of level two. The tactics of the npc boss really made it feel like I was fighting in some sort of space based dogfight with a similarly powered ship. All told, I would recommend this game, as long as you enjoy SHUMPs. Would I see myself playing this game again? Possibly, I enjoyed my time with it that’s for certain. For under $10 USD? Worth the value for certain.
Very intense shmup. Especially fun with friends!
I'm not really a good schmup player, but bought this game to try it out. It's quite a good experience, although trying to dodge all the bullets gets pretty hard! Its already quite well polished for an early access game. Good: - Ability to upgrade the ship to customize it to my playstyle feels good - The "drifting" mechanic seems quite novel and fun to use - Pretty immersive sound effects makes shooting the enemies quite fulfilling Not-so-good: - Could improve on some of the UI/UX choices - Pretty hard for a schmup noob like me (but luckily there's multiple lives?)
The drift mode is awesome. Try it and find out for yourself. My 6yo daughter loved playing it too.
Fun shooter. Feels just like old arcade bullet hell space shooters.
This is complete garbage. Not because it's a bad game. Fundamentally its extremely fun. Too bad it literally doesn't work. I try to use the keyboard, the controls that the screen indicates that you should use in the menu to select things don't work. The mouse pointer can be used, but not to click things. Then when I plug in my controller, it works for literally everything except the X button. The annoying thing is that the X button worked just fine in the Demo when I was using my controller. I truly can't believe that I couldn't even quit the game. I was trying to exit the game from the game menu, and that didn't work either. Just didn't do anything. I have a Razer Blackwidow Elite keyboard, and it works just fine with everything else. I went to the discussions only to discover the developers have indicated that xbox controllers don't work, but only with the X button. This is honestly so stupid. The fact that I cant even use the keyboard is absurd. Tried setting controls to how I want them, but since the keys don't work in the menu properly, that was just not happening. I loved the game for the whole 5 to 10 mintes I played it, but then you just get stuck on the tutorial in the beginning because the X button doesn't work, and it FORCES you to do it. I'll be asking for a refund. I can't believe it's not early access either. Don't waste your money.
Starlight caught my eye because I wanted to play something similar to the arcade games of the 90s and I got more out of it. There was a good variety of weapon choices to customise my spaceship allowing me to explore and experiment different setups. The drifting mechanic took some time to get used to but once you get the hang of it, it adds to the dynamics of the game play. Not entirely sure how it depletes and could only feel it when the ship turns back to course. The game feels balanced in the challenge it provides and I love the visual effects that shoot em ups give. Overall a well designed and simply fun game!
i havent got a lot of game play but so far i have enjoyed it, its a great game to relax and just forget about things and shoot stuff. if you want a game to play while dont want to concentrate then this game is good
A Retro Style Spaceship Shooter modernized with a twist. Drift Mode adds another dimension to the game, having to dodge for enemies coming from every direction gets you on the edge of your seat. The Visuals, Font Choice, 4:3 Aspect Ratio and words like “Token” gives the feel like you’re playing from a large arcade machine with a joystick. I appreciate the attention to detail. The music is what catches my attention. Enjoyable, pleasant, calming and it gets you pumped up for the next battle. It does overpower the sounds of spaceship battling. Being able to customize your spaceship is a great plus. A touch of personalization to suit your playstyle and having to experiment and see what works best for you. I love the generous amount of gems you get which in turn gets you money to upgrade your spaceship, it’s not grindy. The gameplay itself is challenging. Difficulty and complexity on the way these spaceships approach you build up gradually. Overall an enjoyable well polished game to play, especially with your friends. It gets my wholehearted recommendation.
