Great fun, smooth atmosphere, cuddly graphical style, Starbear: Taxi is a simple yet addictive arcade game from Funktronic Labs who previously made Cosmic Trip and Nova-111. I've been playing this game over it's development for a few months and with it's public release I'm proud to recommend the simple fun that is being an Adorable, Ursine Space Cab Driver. Starbear plays like a cross between Flappy Bird and Crazy Taxi. You move the ship by tilting your motion controller and pressing a button to thrust in the direction that you tilt it. You fly to landing pads to pick up clients who each have a request ranging from a simple transportation job, a demolition contract that has you smashing stuff with a wrecking ball, or an extremely scientific excursion to discover the effects that a black hole has on passing motorists. You have limited time to complete as many jobs as you can with each new job giving you more time on the clock. Completing jobs gives you honeycomb that serves as your score with fast completion times giving bonus points. Also appearing periodically are bonus collectables that give even more delicious comb. If that wasn't much of a challenge, there are some sneaky raccoons that appear to try to thwart your enterprise by lobbing heat-seeking missiles at you or stealing your hard earnings with giant magnets. The longer you go the more that appear at once, making a fast-paced frenzy that has you dodging around obstacles in a mad dash for more clients. There are even some rewards for getting a high enough score... The game plays very well in VR, simple enough to run on almost anything with tracked controllers, though there are also gamepad and keyboard controls available. You can even run the game without having a headset, though this is not officially supported and admittedly makes the game a bit harder to play. There aren't many negatives about the game, the controls can take a bit of getting used to due to their sensitivity but it isn't too hard to adjust. It's a very simple game, which may be a turn-off for some, but it's decently priced for a VR game. There is enough challenge to keep me happy (the bears help) but don't expect some extremely deep gameplay here. In short: Starbear is a fun little game that's worth getting if you're looking for a simple yet polished VR arcade game. The team over at Funktronic Labs makes some of the best looking VR games out there, better than some of the big studios, and this one is no exception. I look forward to seeing what they come up with next!
6600K 16GB ram GTX 1080 OG Vive tpcast SS 2.2 (ran like smooth butter on a pancake, perfect) Gameplay Video: https://youtu.be/BFqPPr8Iv8s A Casual clever game probably aimed at kids but can get quite hectic, fly a bear taxi by tilting your controller different ways (based RC flight controls with both 6DOF & 3DOF input) to pick up passengers and drop them off. Also, passengers can act as wrecking balls and enemies try to stop you with a variety of weapons. A black hole even opened up at one stage, there are 2 other game modes. Fun and well priced and while more of a kids VR game I can see adults getting right into it as well. A definite buy for those who enjoy playing VR games with their kids. Worth asking price.
If there was a "Meh" recommendation, I'd pick it. Because at this price range, I've seen worse games, both in VR and in PC. But still, even though the graphics are nice and it has cute bears, it's not a game I'd buy if I knew what I was getting. It's a single level game, with 60 seconds on the timer to take bears to their destination, which each delivery adding extra time. It would be a great game for relaxing and having some fun, but the short timer just ruins the experience. You don't really have time to enjoy the environment and the cute little bears jumping around (and falling to their doom when they're knocked off the platform) because you're constantly trying to get to the next point using some extremely wonky controls. Also, even though it's advertised as a VR game, the controls are much better when playing without a headset, with a keyboard or an xbox controller (I don't think it's a coincidence that the trailer footage is from playing on your PC with a keyboard and not from the VR implementation of the game). Using the VR controllers, the forward/backwards aspect of the controls depends on the orientation of you hand, which totally ruins it in some instances if you're moving your hand around while playing like I do. The VR version ends up being a pain in the ass because the taxi easily ends up behind you and unless you're constantly turning around to find it and control it, you can't be sure of it's exact location (this doesn't happen when playing on a PC, the camera follows the taxi around). And if you do turn around to find it, you're wasting precious seconds, because then you have to turn around again as soon as it's on the right side of the playing field, which ruins your run. It shouldn't even be possible for the spaceship to go behind the player, there's no point (except if there are platforms which spawn behind you, but I don't think I'll ever get this far). The PC version isn't without fault, the camera can't be zoomed out so your field of vision is really small, which means you usually have no idea where the enemies or the objectives are. Also the game menu doesn't seem to work on PC, if you press ESC it just sits there and you can't click anything. What this game really needs is a Custom and/or Endless mode to make it enjoyable for the ones who play to relax and a Campaign mode to make it last for more than an hour. All the above problems wouldn't matter that much to me if I could set the timer to infinite and just enjoy the cute environment and the relaxing music. I mean, the trailer has all these cute scenes in it, but I'm never going to be able to enjoy them in-game cause I'm constantly racing the clock. The implementation of the campaign mode would offer players a little more bang for their buck, and it could be as simple as an Angry Birds-like level system, with 1-3 stars based on your score, with scaling difficulty as you progress (less time on the clock, more enemies, smaller objective rewards, more distance between platforms). Also, the Boss in the third mode is bugged in Oculus Quest 2, it spawns behind the player.
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
This is a very cute VR game whose target audience is probably kids or kids at heart. You only have to use one motion controller to guide the Starbear Taxi with RC like controls. You pull trigger to fly and lean the motion controller forward to make it go forward, lean it backward to go back, left and right, you get the idea. So part of the game is mastering this remote controlled-scheme for navigating the Starbear Taxi. You basically pickup passengers and deliver them at their location. You also pick up items for customers or beat drums or fill blackholes. However, there's several dangers along the way and item pickups as well. Each level seems to be randomized. You have a timer and try to get as much points as possible. You can usually choose which job you want, although it's usually just the one that's nearest unless you're a pro. There is a leaderboard. There are three modes to unlock. The normal mode, the challenge mode, and the way too hard mode where you are supposed to avoid mines and pickup honey that are usually coming at you pretty fast. I didn't notice much difference between the normal mode and challenge mode, however you need to score 200 to unlock each mode progressively. The trick is to get the golden car as quickly as you see it and collect as many coins as you can for easy money. The graphics are good and the artstyle matches the intended audience. Game ran smoothly. I liked the music but opinions will probably vary on that. Most of the action will happen 180 degrees in front of you, but you will need to look back as your Taxi can get behind you. My main problem with the game is the price point. I don't think it fits the amount of content the game has. This should really be a $3-4 game. But there is a lot of polish here and it's not as repetitive as you may think given the randomization. I had some fun. Rate 5.5/10. Recommended for kids. I would rate higher if the price point were lower.
Probably my favorite "cool-down" game for VR. Perfect for ending your VR sessions. Little crazy taxi style gameplay with fun controls and fantastic visuals. Music and sound are top notch as well. I highly recommend this for anyone looking for something different in VR. You will gald you bought it!
2 Minute Video Review → https://youtu.be/txKaFQKYjno Starbear Taxi is a delivery game in which you need to transport various passengers and cargo through a charming and challenging world. You control the taxi by tilting your motion controller and propelling in that direction. It’s fairly intuitive, you’ll be up and running right away. The entire game is beautifully designed and animated. There’s charm everywhere you look with so many things to appreciate and see. It’s a great example of high attention to detail by the developers. This game is obviously family friendly, but I found some of the later missions very challenging. There’s something for everyone here. The game is just $8, so it’s priced perfectly. If you’re looking for a well polished casual game, then I highly recommend it.
One of the most polished VR games I've played. I love that it takes just a few minutes to play one game. Easy to learn, hard to master. Not just in terms of skill, but in learning all the side missions and bonuses. The flow of the game reminds me of a solid pinball machine but with different mechanics.
It's a Fun Good Game. The conrols are very hard for kids. So keep that in mind if you want to buy this for your kids. They might be very disappointed when they know that they can't control the flying ship properly.
