Large-scale battles have become a vestige of the past, depleting resources of conflicting parties. Settled space, where welfare and order had reigned, has become a cemetery for dead ships which is flooded with pirates and adventurists.

very nice game now if they had a more non follow story mode sand box like x2 the threat that would be amazing. would even like to see this in unity engine maybe part 4 hint hint devs?
This feels like one of those games that would probably be a maybe to recommend. I've played this right after Star Wolves 1 (I didn't play 2 since people said avoid it for reasons like bugs) and it just felt like a mixed blessing. Star Wolves 1 is pretty linear - you choose a mission and go to a map. Star Wolves 3 has a more open world to a degree - you can go almost anywhere, but there are plenty of areas that will just obliterate you (and not just because of strong enemies, but simply because the plot says you can't go there). The maps are pretty large and it honestly soon became very tedious to traverse especially since the worlds just seemed... empty? Other than pirates and plot enemies, there really isn't much that happens and for a world in conflict, it seemed very rare for fights between factions outside of plot and minor ones like Pirates vs anyone (mainly traders). It also has a huge problem with fluctuating difficulty like I had with Star Wolves 1 - where I honestly just found Normal to be brain dead as long as I kept properly geared up outside of a few missions (and the final mission on the corporate side...). I thought maybe doing Hard for 3 would help, but that was a huge mistake. You don't start with a decent mothership and while you don't actually have too much to worry about the first few missions (basically a tutorial though there is a separate tutorial), but you are required to fight for your first true mothership (Mastiff) which I found frustrating on hard simply because the enemies were just that much better equipped. Fortunately, it being an almost open world, it meant I could do what I usually do - grind to get good gear before progressing. Suddenly, the difficulty goes away when you had things like Kali Shields + Tungsten regeneration for the Mothership and 3x Ghost on the fighters which basically meant everyone was nearly immortal - enemies could see the fighters and couldn't hurt the mothership (and if they did, it had good regeneration). At least for most of the game, but then you start getting into end game where you also start deciding who to side with. I went with the NESF/New Empire if only because they were the least annoying to me. I don't know if it's better on the other paths, but the NESF was frustrating. All the power in my party meant nothing when suddenly there's a bunch of weak transports you need to escort (at least in 1, you could clear the map before talking to them so they were at least safe) and even an obnoxious stealth mission that I don't even know how I beat - I had to save an admiral and after many reloads, I clicked on the bad guy... and suddenly he was beaten and I won? I have no idea if there was some pity thing or a bug in my favor, but why did they need a stealth mission and right at the end? It was bad enough to escort the slow ships on large maps or the few times where you get ambushed right at the portals where it's hard to properly prepare, but stealth? I also didn't really care for the story - it was just there after some time. The news seemed to talk about exploits, but I just skimmed it at some point. I also didn't really find any character memorable or honestly that likeable. I really didn't care for the main - he felt a bit whiny and stupid at times. Choices also didn't seem to matter. Sometimes you had two choices, but no matter what you pick, it always seemed like the companions was the wrong one. At least the game ran well on linux and i didn't notice any bugs (other than what possibly saved me from the stealth mission).
