About
Star Vortex is a top-down ARPG space shooter that follows the formula of classic titles such as Diablo 2. Humanity is fighting wars on all fronts. Suddenly a new threat appears out of nowhere and begins attacking the human forces. Earth must be warned about this new danger and it is up to you to escort the mothership back home to deliver the unsettling news.
You play as a pilot of a fighter ship who must venture out into the space sector to find the gateway keys that will allow the mothership to reach Earth. Throughout your journey, you will gain experience allowing you to level up and upgrade your ship from a small frigate to a massive battleship while collecting equipment that synergizes with your build and playstyle. Explore randomly generated sectors fighting elite enemies and bosses then work your way up through difficulties.

Along with creating an ultimate build to match your playstyle and searching for the best equipment you can visit the shipyard on the mothership to design your perfect ship. Starting with a small frigate, as you gain experience and level up, you can increase the size of your ship, from a small fighter to a destroyer to a cruiser and finally a huge battleship.
Unlock new weapon and equipment slots allowing you to increase the total number of weapons and equipment that you can use at one time. From lasers to projectile weapons to rocket launchers and automatic turrets, the possibilities are endless as to how you fit your ship.
Every aspect of the ship is available for you to design. From its appearance to the placement of the weapons and equipment slots, you are free to design your ship how you see fit. Save your favourite creative designs and share them with friends and the community, with a ship design import and export option.

Randomly generated sectors make every game different but your navigation system will help you plot your course. How you tackle your exploration of a sector is your decision to make. Do you take charge and head directly for the boss or do you take your time and explore levelling up? Perhaps you will take a detour to scavenge for rare and legendary upgrades and equipment. The choice is yours, but danger lurks in every system.
Not all systems are the same, some contain environmental dangers such as heat which without protection will cause your ship to burn, or corrosion that will damage your ship over time. There is also the threat, where the invaders can attack without warning. All could be peaceful as you collect the spoils of battle only to suddenly, be invaded by this strange new and relentless enemy. You must always be alert and prepared, as with great rewards come great risks.

Put your equipment, upgrades, and skills to use and lay waste to your enemies throughout your journey. As you travel through each sector you will find yourself in skirmishes with small groups, rescuing and escorting stranded pilots, intercepting enemy convoys, entering warzones and coming face to face with mighty elites and gigantic bosses.
Each race and faction has its strengths and weaknesses and you must adapt and adjust your equipment to give yourself the advantage. Equip greater heat resistance and non-heat weapons against the fiery Junkers or corrosion resistance against the mysterious Outcasts. Your ability to adapt will make the difference between survival or death.

A versatile ship designer allows you to get creative and construct your perfect ship from a vast array of parts, choosing colors and slot placements as you wish.
Constant progression grants the unlocking of bigger ships and more weapon and equipment slots as you level up your pilot.
Three large upgrade trees where players can create the perfect build to suit their play style.
A deep and complex item system, with many possible builds and synergies to discover.
A huge array of weapons to use against your foes such as lasers, homing missiles, energy pulses, time dilation, drones, cloaking fields, grapple guns, tesla coils and much more.
Procedurally generated sectors to explore, which make every game vastly different from the last.
Various difficulty settings to suit all skill levels and a Hardcore Mode for those looking for the ultimate challenge.
Play how you want to play with a huge array of settings. Controls are fully customizable allowing keyboard only, keyboard and mouse, controller, or steam deck.
Played a bunch in the 0.6.X patch - Great game! Looking forward to the full release. Never thought I'd see a spaceship arcady ARPG, but here we are. The "just one more mission" is strong with this one :)
Star Vortex is essentially a 2025 rehash of ShellCore Command mixed with elements of Star Valor and Reassembly. If any of those words mean anything to you, then you'll like this game. The building system is one of the most fluid and easy-to-use building systems of any spaceship builder i've played - You drag blocks onto a grid, and you're free to place and order and color them however you want. Stats are determined by ship size and radius, thruster and weapon placement is (mostly) irrelevant. The gameplay is pretty similar to shellcore but with heavy emphasis on debuffs. You strafe around and dodge enemy fire, firing a myriad and in a panic - using battery packs and nanobots to quickly regenerate lost hull. Most attacks are telegraphed, however some will do a lot more damage than others and it can be hard to tell sometimes what's going on, especially in the lategame with nearly hundreds of ships and thousands of projectiles. Some deaths will not feel like you did anything wrong. The game has an in-depth upgrade and modifier system. There's many different builds you can do - coating the whole map in toxic fumes, using on-crit effects to stack up on armor until you have hundreds of thousands of effective health, covering an area in turrets, fusing modifiers together until you get a pulse with enough radius to cover an entire group of enemies... all the while taking modifiers on dropped weapons and equipment, and throwing it on your own to make a build capable of defeating enemies with 800% damage output in the lategame on the hardest difficulty. The subtle changes in your abilities throughout progression are one of the defining features of this game - a 5% here, a rarity change there... Nitpicks: I wish there was greater variance in ship sizes - A dreadnought, the largest ship size in the game, is only really about 5-6x the size of a little frigate. Larger ships do not really *feel* larger, they feel more like medium ships with how they control and move. You will notice throughout your progression that the size leap between a frigate and a destroyer feels huge, but the leap between a battleship and dreadnought isn't really that much. In addition, there's about 6 categories of weapons and you'll absolutely feel that some (Pulses, beams, lightning, drones, AoE projectiles) are better than others (Projectiles, turrets, non-AoE projectiles) - this is because there's significantly more small enemies than large enemies. For every cruiser or battleship you fight, you'll have to fight a hundred frigates and destroyers. Weapons that obliterate elites and bosses will not see much use against the swarms of small enemies. The asking price is sharp, but this is because the game is in development and will absolutely get more sectors and more action in the future. And while it's not totally bug-free, I experienced zero freezes or crashes throughout my playthrough. Overall, really nice! I'll probably look over this review and change this when the game is fully released.
First off, this game runs incredibly well on the steam deck and feels made for it. This game is not only well polished in Early Access, it combines some of my favorite things from Hack and slash games as well as Roguelites. It's really more like Diablo 3s portals though. You go to a new location with your upgrades, take down the enemy ships or complete the objective, grab your loot and upgrades, and then either head back or keep going deeper to the objective. And the customization of your ship is really well implemented and incredibly customizable. The dev is also super engaged with the community and listens to their feedback, which bodes very well for the longevity of the game.
This is a fantastic one-more-turn shoot-'em-up with a retro feel and great mechanics. It's the kind of arcade-y game you can play for five minutes or five hours, having fun and making progress every session. The ship- and weapon-building are immersive, easy to use, and add an unexpected layer of depth to the gameplay loop. The dev managed to break up the normal grind of a game like this and made everything feel fast-paced and fresh. Star Vortex already feels like the kind of sandbox experience you can come back to over and over and always find something new and entertaining.
So far this is best spaceship arpg i've tried. And it's nice to see it being activelly developed! Hope to see more customization when it comes to building ship, like adding wings add speed, hull adds more hp, etc, because currently it's just visual. When it comes to gear/stats and crafting, it looks good, but can be expanded with more crafting methods, more stats, unique gear like in PoE, etc As PoE enjoyer, i hope to see this game having somewhat similar levels of customization and amount of content!
TLDR: no build balance: build range + speed + heat capacity to steamroll anything. Solid start but extremely limited build options in terms of what is viable (at the time of writing): the only builds that get the job done are range + speed (also heat-maxing to stay in boost invuln - feels like a cheat mechanic), which gets stale very quickly. Tank configs are just getting shredded regardless of how much resistance stacking there is in the build (tested on challenging difficulty - increasing it will invalidate any tanking attempts even further). Some parts of the game imply build diversity - by giving options to augment different approaches, however at the same time some mechanics such as (especially) enemy damage output modifiers (the difficulty settings) are completely invalidating them.
I've played 14 hours on the demo in addition to 11 hours on this game and I can say that I really enjoy this game. It has multiple customization options that allow you to build a ship that fits your playstyle with many different weapon types and items that allow for a variety of combat types such as missile boat, carrier, beam/gun, mines and many more. The only real problem I have encountered is limited to the big guns which are limited to a fixed forward firing arc. Since I use a controller I don't have the ability to strafe or reverse which is what these weapons really need, on keyboard this probably isn't an issue but it is still annoying because I really want to see what having four artillery guns linked would do to the enemy.
EA Spaceship shooter + customize ship + controls = Explore, fight enemies and complete missions in each sector. Gain credits, weapons and more throughout your adventure. To infinity and beyond! RPG mechanics are dead and have no perspectives. This is a dull boring repeating game like asteroid shooter from 80-x.
