Excellent indie game at the right price! This game isn't terribly long, but it is punishingly hard precision platform with an excellent retro feel. *BUT* more than that, there is a creepy ambiance throughout feeding into the lore of the game world. The dev did a great job writing a story that fills in details of the worlds he's built with his other DERE games. The level design is surprisingly great, give it's extremely simple rules and retro setup. He layers in mechanics and you really have to master them to progress well. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I only have 2 minor critiques. 1) I'd like some visual cue on the level select screen that there is an uncollected document in that room 2) I'd like arrow-key controls added (and D-pad on a gamepad) My keyboard has a function to swap WSAD & arrows, so it wasn't a big deal. I tried the gamepad, but it only worked with the analog stick, and I vastly prefer D-pad for precision platformers. It'd also be handy if the gamepad "B" key could manage to click the "close button" on some of the in-game windows, or when you have to "Type Z" to go back to the game. ...but again, I was very pleased with the game, and swapping to arrow keys felt great for me. The character does like to move quickly, but that's not a bug it is a feature. It *WILL* frustrate you, though, as you'll try to scootch forward only to move to far and hit a bandsaw or fall off a ledge, lol. The save points are plentiful though. I didn't get all of the secret documents though. There were 2 or 3 where I just kept dying after getting the document, so instead I just worked on making it to the door rather than getting to the door with the document. I'll have to go back and master those ones :-D
Spooky Pixel Hero is a great retro-style game that combines a spooky atmosphere with fun and unique gameplay! The atmosphere is horrory but not too intense, mixing old-school charm with new and exciting ideas and puzzles. It is challenging enough to keep you on playing. Honestly, I know my character’s death is usually because of my own silly mistakes, haha. my It is a must-play for anyone who loves retro-style games with a spooky twist! 5/5!
Very good game if you want to get mad at some pixels, 10/10 would play again
A fun little retro game from the Appsir Universe, happening way before the Dere trilogy it adds to the whole story. It keeps in line with the difficulty from the rest of the games, it also has this little unnerving atmosphere that makes you want to keep playing, very recomended if you like platformer games and Appsir games!
(I already finished this game on my phone, hence the short playtime here) Personally, I was extremely excited for Spooky Pixel Hero's (further on SPH) release ever since it was announced. And when I first played it, I was immediately hooked on it. The graphics are very simple, though I believe it adds to the atmosphere of the game (and the fact it's said to be from 1976). I think, that the platforming is slightly harder than other games from the Appsir franchise, though I haven't found it to be a problem so big it would drive me away. I also really enjoyed the "swipe to delete glitches" part, they were pretty refreshing throughout the game and a nice short break from the platforming. I wish there would've been more of those, but once again, no big issue. Last thing I'd love to highlight is the lack of music throughout the platformer levels. Sure, you may be thinking, "how can a lack of music be any good?", but in SPH's case, it worked wonders. After all, the greatest horror is individual; it's what the mind comes up with by itself. The lack of music adds to the tension, which leads your brain to anticipate the next jumpscare, or something that could go wrong, which leaves you perfectly uneasy (and jumping in your seat at a bat flying through a window. Personal experience.) Overall, I enjoyed this game and I believe it's definitely worth the price.
(I've been playing on my phone, but I also got this on Steam). Another fun little gem from AppSir. Challenging platforming, intriguing storytelling, & excellent use of old video game styles. All hallmarks I've come to love from this developer.
Fun little prequel with g̲l̳i̵t̶c̶͒̽he̜̊s̭ and j̸̢̘̳͓͚͕͕̰̩͉̭̯̮̎̂͑̂͂̎͜u̶͎̺̻͌̃̆͌͆̾̈́͛̓̓̂̈̿̔͒̎̓̕̚m̴̨̨̨̢̢̡͍̠̣͇̯̙͓̭͎̼̠̟̠͍̰͍̙͉͕̲͓̻̦͙̑͋̒͗͋͜͜p̷̧̢̛̖͍̹̘̮̹͚̦̞̦͔͙̮̺̙̩̲̯̘̮̖̯̗̭̻̣̯̹̥͖̪͕̞̑͒̈͌͂̓̍͒̽͋̈́́̍̏̅̂̋͒͘͜͠s̵̤̬̝̫̥̼͚̹̲͍̰̪̹̳̻̼̟̣͉̿̄͑͑̐̚͜͜c̵̢̧̹̳͇͎̬̦͛́̿́͆̉̓̾̆̋͌̄͐̀̀̈́̊̂̉͗͗̏̎̓͆͘͝͝͝ͅà̷̛̛̛̘͈̯̪̫͖̋̔́̃͛̌̃̐̽̐̊̏͆͒͘̚̕͠͠ŗ̵̨̛͙̳͖̝̼̗̙͇̱̜̜̮̘͇̼̓̊͋̂̑͗͋̄͒͒̈́̍̐̓͑̍̈͊́̐͘̚͝͠͝͝͝ͅȩ̵̧̡͖͉͖̣͎̝̙̈́̒̓̾̈́͐̎̿̑͋̊͌͐͋̐̊͑̎͘̚͝͝s.
ok this is hard to recommend but at same time is not bad game is just... i will suggest any other Appsir game over this. Lets first take out the elephant of the room, this is a hard plataformer (that moves alot so bad for precission) that have too few scary parts. Usually when I think in Appsir games the horror comes first the gameplay comes second, and here the horror comes third or four before the rest. That means is a bad game... well no but basicly he toke out all what make him different of the rest of plataformer games. NOw the puzzles are actually ok or great a lot of times in the deaths got a form to reduce time in a part so that is good feel, but the control is kinda hard for the wrong reason. The problem or at least my problem is that a little touch is huge move in window, so if you are between a set of spines and you press you probably die. With time your muscular memory in the puzzle will do the work but before that I feel that my runs were more about getting the muscular memory and not the get a better ability. But well if you already played all of his games in steam.. I do at least, get this is not so bad... hoping for he get back to the horror that I feel in his first games. PD: yup the few parts with scary things are good, even the last part of game feels good but for the whole game I did not feel that terrorific atmosphere of his other games.
