Split Fiction is basically everything you’d want a follow-up to It Takes Two to be, and then some. It keeps the core mechanics like the double jump and dash but adds new stuff like wall running and using poles to get around. It honestly feels like a step forward in terms of the action, story, and how much you get sucked into the world. While It Takes Two was limited to different areas of a house, Split Fiction goes much bigger. The story follows two writers, Zoe and Mio, who end up trapped in an experiment by an evil corporation called Rader. Since Zoe writes sci-fi and Mio writes fantasy, the levels switch between those two genres as you try to destroy the machine. One of the best parts of the game is the side stories. These are short stories the characters wrote, and they’re some of the most creative things I’ve seen from a studio in a long time. The childhood ones—like the Sausage Story and the Dentist Story—were favourites, along with the Pig Farm and Artificial Sun stories. My only real disappointment is that they stopped adding these side stories at a certain point; I really wish they had kept them going until the very end. The level design is top-notch, and the puzzles definitely had me scratching my head. However, I have to get this out of my system: the pinball stage is straight-up torture. Whoever designed that clearly wanted to mess with the players. On the other hand, the final stage completely blew my mind. I’ve never seen anything like those two realities sitting side-by-side where you can move between them so easily. Hazelight really knocked it out of the park with this one. To anyone considering it, don’t think twice—just go for it. It’s a beautiful experience that you’ll get lost in for hours.
