Never a day off lol

Introduction
Spirit Swap: Lofi Beats to Match-3 To is a visual novel with plenty of match-3 gameplay developed and published by Soft Not Weak, LLC. You take on the role of Samar, a witch who lives just outside the city of Demashq and works as a spirit swapper at night, eliminating spirits. When Samar has the day off, she decides to visit her friends in Demashq, but somehow, the spirits have started penetrating the city's magical barrier. Thus, it's up to Samar and her friends to put a stop to these spirits, all the while hoping that they'll still be able to attend an upcoming major concert by 5HAG VISION. :o As for the gameplay, the game consists of three modes. There's story mode in which Samar visits her friends, helping them out with their problems and possibly cultivating romance. You can choose from three difficulty modes, which are the equivalent of easy, normal, and hard. (For review purposes, I chose the equivalent of normal mode.) Samar can choose to chat with and visit friends as well as decide whether to pursue romances with them or stay as friends. (I should note that there's only one exception, but due to their personal circumstances, it's understandable.) Other than choosing who to visit and whether to pursue romances and whatnot, there aren't really any choices. The majority of the gameplay is the match-3 portion in which Samar has to match 3 or more of the same spirits to eliminate them from the board. Also, story mode has the option to customize Samar's room. As she visits friends and completes events, she'll receive gifts. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3612002580 Also, endless mode and versus mode are present. While endless mode is pretty self-explanatory, versus mode consists of choosing any playable character from the main story and competing against another character (via another player or computer). Plenty of CGs as well as some English voice acting and a varied lo-fi soundtrack are present. Also, there are several Steam achievement, and at the time of this review, they count towards a user's global total.
Review
It has been a long time since I last touched on a match-3 game (although I enjoy them very much) and with Spirit Swap being a visual novel (a genre that I enjoy a lot) as well, it felt like the perfect time to dive into this game. I wished that I had gotten around to this game sooner, but I'll explain later as to the delay. :o I started off with story mode, and I like how it doesn't take long to get into the story after a brief gameplay tutorial. Even though there is an overall story in which the spirits are trying to get into Demashq, other stories are present in regards to Samar's friends. For example, Mo is feeling depressed about her recent breakup even though she tries to hide it by acting cheerful. (I think some of us can relate to that.) It's great to see Samar try to help her friends work out their problems, whether they be relationships or being overworked. As I mentioned earlier, Samar can pursue romances with most of the characters. I like how this is approached, as the relationships never feel forced. Samar can choose to take things as slowly as she and her chosen partner(s) want, and you don't even have to pursue romance. There are otome, yuri, and even poly relationships that can be formed, which makes for great diversity. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3612002094 If you want, you can even have Samar pursue multiple relationships in one save file. While this is convenient for gameplay and achievement purposes, it can feel a bit unrealistic. Still, Samar and her friends are in another world, so I suppose the usual human rules don't apply. lol As for the gameplay, the match-3 element is so much fun. I've missed playing match-3 games, so this game gave me great motivation to try to get back into them more. With story mode, if you ever just want to skip the match-3 part, you can choose the option to let Samar win when you pause the game. This is good if you just want to pursue the story more. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3612002395 Endless and versus modes are lots of fun, too. Also, I love decorating Samar's room with gifts from her friends. It was fun receiving them and adding personal touches to her room. At the time of this review, I'm only missing one item, which is a refrigerator. I'm not sure how to get it, but hopefully, this mystery will be solved someday. Still, all the achievements are obtainable. This was a concern initially since one of the achievements involves playing versus mode in local two-player mode. However, you can get around this by setting the second player to human and having them use the keyboard controls while you use a game controller. (I almost forgot to mention, but I used my controller for this game since I found the controls for it to be easier to use than for keyboard.) With the art, it is gorgeous. It has that colorful style that feels like you're in the 80's. The backgrounds and sprites are drawn beautifully, and I especially enjoyed viewing the CGs. I only wish that a CG gallery was present, so I could have taken screenshots of my favorite ones. As for the music, the soundtrack is great to listen to. The tracks have that relaxing, lo-fi vibe, perfect as Samar is visiting friends or doing some spirit swapping. I was pleasantly surprised to hear some English voice acting as well. The voices fit perfectly with their respective characters.
Conclusion
Would I recommend Spirit Swap: Lofi Beats to Match-3 To? If you're looking for a wonderful visual novel that embraces diversity with relationships, you enjoy match-3 gameplay, and/or you like getting all those Steam achievements, then this is definitely worth checking out. I had so much fun playing this game and experiencing the stories of these characters, only wishing that I had gotten around to this game sooner. For the asking price, it might feel a bit steep for those who are considering the number of gameplay hours. (It took me around 10 hours to 100% complete the game.) Of course, you can choose to wait for a sale, and it's in a Steam bundle. Finally, I'd like to take the time to thank Soft Not Weak, LLC for the review key. Spirit Swap was so much fun (I guess I can't emphasize that part enough lol), and I love the diversity that's embraced. ^^
The Introverted Gamer and Otome Rakuen team up to give readers highly detailed, thorough reviews of hot romance games.
magical, queer, and casual enough to satisfy your inner candy crush millenial mom
Boy do I have mixed feelings about this title. Where to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ start? I immediately set the difficulty to Sheesh! because I expected the match 3 to work like every versus other one I've encountered. I am the type that quickly scans the board and furiously matches all possible matches to keep my board empty, favouring letting them attack me while I keep deflecting with maybe a few power shots at them til the health bar is pecked away or the timer runs out, whichever happens first. Am I perfect at it? No. But given a handful of tries, it always pans out. However, this one ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ schooled me. It taught me how to set up a chain reaction by slowing down a little bit to see the flow of the board instead of anticipating the flow of the tiles. Had to dumb down the difficulty because I didn't understand what the hell was going on at first. Thought I was having an off day but no. Strategize, maximize, power shot them to death. Ok. Figured it out. Tweaked my playstyle. Challenge gone but still fun. I did like that you can just skip match 3 if you just want the story. That was nice. But the story is where I have the most mixed feelings I think. While I liked the representation (Kanon is my Ace bestie and deserves ALL the mozzie sticks) i thought the story set up was trash. Leading romantic relationships with the idea that if you fix them they love you is a way love can happen. WHY THE ♥♥♥♥ IS THAT THE CASE WITH EVERYONE? Leon: Stop working so hard and take care of yourself. "Yay! You helped me do that I love you!" LuLu: Stop working so hard, learn to relax. "Yay! You helped me! I love you! *kissy kissy*" Kedsi: LITERALLY STOP WORKING SO HARD AND ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DESTRESS. "Look! I did the impossible, made wireless magic AND learned to relax! Hot damn do I love you!" Cleo, Dio, Theo (the polycule): "YES! FINALLY A MEDIATOR TO KEEP OUR POLYCULE POLYCULING!" Like... what the ♥♥♥♥ were they doing before? "We worked out our problems!" Ok, and did that skill fall out of your collective consciousness when Samar rolled onto the scene? The ♥♥♥♥? Pookie: "Everyone relies on me but nobody thinks about my needs." THEY SAY TO THE ONE GOING AROUND FIXING EVERYONE'S PROBLEMS! And Samar does and they get all ooey gooey because it's literally just another version of "stop working so hard, take time for you" with a dash of, "also speak up sometimes about your wants and needs. It's ok." Mo&Iskander: Lumped these goobers together because they broke up with each other and Samar dates them both and they are both getting over the break up. "Wow! Thank you for being patient and fixing our relationship with each other! You're the honey-iest of bunches!" Kanon: I will die for this angel. Slay me. Strike me down. This sweet little cinnamon bun is worried about fitting in but Samar says, no dear one, let us fit into you sometimes. And they like that idea. And then they're like, I like who I am and I'm not interested in pursuing a relationship like others do. And I was like... I'm listening. Where is this going? I am seeing myself in this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dialogue right now. And they DO end up together and it's that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ deep ass closeness where you are two people sharing the world as your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ selves except they're a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ angel and sometimes break the world they're also holding together so like... But Samar is just there and they are just there and they are sharing beautiful moments and no one is being weird or lewd or sexy zexy horny bajorny so... yeah! We can tell I had a favourite storyline. lol (The game isn't horndog central either. It's pretty cute and mostly mild with that kind of stuff. Just really vibin' with the idea that you can be in love and close and the physicality of it isn't at the crux of it. ) I did appreciate it was feeling based. It was a very good read if you need a reminder of certain characteristics a lot of us suffer from time to time or frequently. But I'm pissed pretty much everything was set up around "earning" love by helping. It is a common thing so I don't want to hate on the concept but I want to hate on the one trick pony of that makes it the core element. Everyone was varied. Everyone had a personality. These are good. They could have ALSO had different reasons for getting together. I did appreciate you didn't have to romance anyone at all and the game didn't punish you for it. That was GREAT. MORE OF THAT TOO IN GAMES. So I guess I'll give it a thumbs up? Because it wasn't bad. It just... UGH! Edit: Saw a typo and it bothered me so I FIXED IT JUST LIKE MC GOING AROUND FIXING EVERYONE! WHO'S GONNA FIX THEM, HUH?! :p
OMG where do I start okay so the colors are great the music is great the characters are amazing the lil companion peeps are lovable, the cast is diverse, the story mode is sweet but shows real emotional intelligence. The art is great and the cast is amazing. Really do love this one. Coming from someone who started their match-3 obsession with Tetris Attack on SNES.
Really cute little game to relax with. I thought I'd only pick it up for 20 minutes before bed and then an hour and a half went by. I like the demon character designs! If you like the art style and want to chill out then I recommend it.
The art style is queer vaporwave daydreams. The music is smooth melted chocolate. The gameplay is the sound of leaves crunching under your feet. The characters are a cool glass of lemonade on a perfect sunny day. The story is a warm hug you didn't know you needed.... What else can I say?
Genuinely one of the best games I have ever played in my life!! Having Lo-fi to jam out to while playing a puzzle game and reading lore is the greatest idea! It's relaxing, soothing, and is a wonderful vibe. Each character's theme suits them beautifully! Speaking of characters, they are epic! Every single one of them is unique and carry their own thoughts and values. It's a treat getting to know each and every one of them! The attention to their outfits and genuine fashion had me wanting to dye my own hair! xD The puzzle mode is easy to learn but I can see where the challenges lie. xD It's quite amazing! Even cooler, it is optional! You don't even have to do the swapping if you are really just wanting to play through the story! Listen, I cannot praise this beautiful game enough. I love the characters so much and my only gripe is that it is not long enough. lmao But the game existing is a gift within itself. Well done to everyone who took part in this!!~ <3
It's Panel de Pon/Tetris Attack/Pokemon Puzzle League, queer as hell, with chill music and and has entertaining story. What's not to love? My only real complaint is there's no "classic/tournament mode" without the powerups. Also has the familiar jank that the previous games have in multiplayer. Not a bad thing, just charming and nostalgic. Not sure if it's intentional or not but amusing that it's still there. Smooth as butter on Gamehub and Stutters on Game Native sadly. But the crew of nerds working around the clock on compatibility issues will get it right probably by the time you read this.
The soundtrack's relaxing and everybody is hot
if this type of game interests you even one bit, please play it. it is so so so good and is beyond worth the money
