Spike Mtn is at first difficult but once the basic moves of the games are learned it is also deeply rewarding. It first made me want to stop playing as I could not even progress past the early stages of the tutorial. A few levels on, however, I managed to piece together a double rope jump and land on the appropriate platform. When this happened a genuine feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction came over me. This in itself is remarkable for such a simple but rewarding game. Note* would highly encourage using a physical mouse! Looking forward to more games from the creator/s of Spike Mtn!

Spike Mtn is a fun 2D precision platformer. It's easy to learn, but very hard to master and it gets more and more difficult as you advance in the game. It's definitely a good game for reaction training.
Spike Mtn is a must-play for anyone who loves platformers. Its unique gameplay mechanics, exceptional level design, and nostalgic music make it a memorable gaming experience. The game is challenging yet addictive. One of the best aspects of Spike Mtn is the unique gameplay mechanics. The game requires you to fire a grapple to navigate around obstacles, which adds a whole new dimension to the platformer genre. This mechanic is executed brilliantly, making every successful jump and grapple feel incredibly satisfying. The level design in Spike Mtn is exceptional. Each level offers a different set of challenges, with obstacles that require you to master the grapple, swing and super jump mechanic to progress. The difficulty level is on the more challenging side, but the clever integration of the tutorial into the first few levels of the game makes it accessible to newcomers. Mouse essential
Spike Mtn

Grappling Hook Supremacy
I love using grappling hooks in any game, be it Dying Light or Just Cause. They’re just so fun to use! This game completely focuses on the pixel-perfect use of the Grappling Hook. They handcrafted the game in such a way that it was both enjoyable and challenging.
About This Game

Storyline
The game doesn’t really follow a specific plot. I mean, the developers didn’t actually write a full-fledged storyline, unlike similar games like Celeste, Ori, etc. The only thing I figured out while playing is that you do know your end goal, to reach the end of the mountain. I assume the mountain’s name is Spike Mtn due to the game’s name. I guess it’s very similar to Celeste since your end goal is to reach the peak of the mountain.
Gameplay Mechanics

This game has lots of potential in becoming a speedrunning title. They developed all the game mechanics in such a fashion. I am saying this because this game literally relies on correct timing and positioning.
The game looks very simple at first glance but trust me, it isn’t. It does have simple mechanics but they take a while to master. Believe me when I say this, you’ll go through a lot of “trial-&-error” situations.
I was surprised to find out that all the mechanics in this game have been polished so much. They are so smooth and are satisfying to use.
There are a decent number of levels to play, about 50 of them. It would have been cool if they integrated Steam Workshop or something that would allow players to either Mod the game or make their own levels for people to play. Kinda like how Geometry Dash did it.

Visuals and Sound
Honestly, the game has an extremely visually pleasing art style. It is pixel art with a very calm color palette. The only issue I had with this game is that the player character feels a bit too small. Maybe they wanted to showcase the “A small guy in a huge world” effect but it kinda made it awkward to play, especially when there are too many elements on the screen. They could also improve the visual indicator for the grapple. Right now, it’s just two white squares on the top of the player’s head. It would be better if they showed it on the grapple sprite itself or something as I easily lose track of it. When it comes to sound design, I have no complaints. They made a really vibey OST for this game!
Pros

Simple yet challenging mechanics.
Mastering the game mechanics may require some time, but the undeniable satisfaction that comes with improving is worth the effort.
The game offers over 50 “challenges” which ought to keep you engaged for quite a while considering the overall gameplay difficulty.

Cons

Missed opportunity to add Level Creator or Steam Workshop integration.

Conclusion
In conclusion, Spike Mtn offers enjoyable and challenging gameplay with its pixel-perfect use of the grappling hook. Despite the lack of a specific storyline, the game's mechanics, visuals, and soundtrack create a satisfying experience. The absence of a level creator or Steam Workshop integration is a drawback, but overall, it's worth giving this game a shot. Reviewer: Midplayz I hate games like this since I dislike losing. The grappling hook is an age-old gaming staple. It is a reliable tool, one that is usually easy to acquire, but difficult to master. And it is this tool that is the main focus of Spike Mtn, the debut game developed by WorldForm. Hailing from Australia, WorldForm is an indie studio that wants to suck its players into the games they create. Using atmosphere, scale, and attention to detail, they plan to immerse their player base into all manner of digital worlds. Take the challenge. Overcoming the challenges of Spike Mtn entails using precision movement to conquer each obstacle. Grappling hooks are used to swing back and forth, and build momentum. Gain enough and the player can then launch themselves a fair distance through the air. If things go horribly wrong, the end result is a swift and merciful death. And I can guarantee things will go wrong. Many, many times. In the same vein as Celeste or Super Meat Boy, Spike Mtn is a game of trial and error. It requires quick reflexes to navigate, and an iron will to succeed. Control-wise, it's fairly simple. Spacebar to jump. A and D to move left and right, and W and S to move up and down when appropriate. Mouse is for aiming and left click to deploy a hook. There are some slightly more advanced combinations of presses to do but it's all fairly accessible. The view of Spike Mtn. Two grappling hooks can be deployed one after the other each time the character leaves the ground. They will then detach after a few seconds. This adds a nice bit of fairly unique movement to the game. Getting the timing right for building momentum was a little frustrating to get used to. After a few minutes, I got the hang of it though. There were handy little tutorials included which was a sweet little touch. The number of grapples available, and the time until they detach, are displayed discreetly above the character. The indicators even flash when there's enough momentum to long jump. All this helps communicate information to the player without being too distracting. A haphazard charm. The art style is a little too minimal for my taste, although overall it does work. Some assets are more detailed than others which gives the game a slightly haphazard uneven look. There's definitely a charm to it though and there's enough visual depth. It's also very easy to see what the grappling hooks can attach to. The overworld is actually pretty sweet. Initially, I thought the game was sectioned off into different levels. There are markers that go up the mountain periodically, a little like a classic Mario game but no! These just represent flag checkpoints on the journey, ticked off as the traveller carries on. Each checkpoint also has a tally of how many times the character died during that particular stretch too. A nice little touch. Later sections also do start to get creative with the environment without straying too far from the original mountain setting. Perth-based musician Macks Martin provides the soundtrack. From the funky little beat on the overworld to the slightly more suspenseful music that plays when playing, it's all pretty easy listening. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of this type of twitch gameplay. I find it a little too frustrating to truly find entertaining. For someone who does enjoy these types of games though, Spike Mtn is a solid addition to their library. For the price, I'd be hard-pressed not to recommend it. Whilst not as pretty as similar games, it still comes out swinging. Found this review helpful? You can find more on the BestNerdLife website! https://bestnerd.life/
Spike Mtn is one of those games that starts you off thinking, "I got this, my skills won't fail me" - just to then put you in your place...with spikes! Between the smashing into the ground, horrible timings on my part and the agony of defeat when you think you had that perfect swing...you can't help but to enjoy it all. That said, if you want to test your timing and reaction skills, as well as problem solving - then be sure to grab this game. It's also great to challenge your friends to as well! 10/10 - would splat on spikes again.
