Spectacular Sparky has the vibe of a classic Genesis-era scrolling shooter, similar to Gunstar Heroes. The game has an open ended quality to its design, as you have not just standard action stages but flying ship shoot em up levels and parts where you ride animals to proceed. What really sets this game apart from the glut of other similar indie shooters is the personality. Sparky is a pretty funny character and some of the dialogue is hilarious. The voice work and sound design in general is also really well done. There are tons of boss fights and you meet up with bosses you've defeated later for a rematch which I found to be a lot of fun. The game is decent length compared to other scrolling shooter games, but it also happens to be super easy and lacks replayability. Once you beat the game, there's a time trial mode with no achievements attached and "Frenzy mode" which sounds like it will be hard but is actually easier than the original mode. This is because while your health slowly drains you also get infinite hover and your gun has no cooldown. As a result, you can pummel enemies nonstop and the final boss is even easier since the lack of cooldown practically instakills him. There's also a checkpoint after every 30 second section in both modes, so really, if you're looking for a big challenge, you won't find it here. What you will find is a beautifully made somewhat casual shooter that ticks all the boxes on quality without really leaving a huge impact due to the lack of replayability or pulse pounding challenge.
fine little game, but one of the shortest games ive ever played too the game gets worse on average as it goes on, with the game just spamming more and more enemies on screen, its mostly manageable but sometimes it feels impossible to properly dodge everything its throwing at you bosses are alright, simple but they do the job, really not much to say about this game and for some reason they hired arin hanson to do some of the voice work, despite him not being a very good voice actor, everyone else does a decent job for what i assume is meant to be a very intentionally cheesy set of performances meant to be overly exaggerated parody the fact there's a curvy furry wolf oc character amongst everyone else in the game being so grotesque and unnatural is probably the funniest joke in the whole game 6/10
Got this game for dirt cheap and at that price it was more than worth it! Feels like an indie euro platformer but with a big love for games made By Treasure (alien soldier, gunstar heroes, dynamite headdy, mischief makers) and..., voice acting for some reason?! The voice acting is solid for what it is, a couple parts are even funny, but overall the story felt like it needed a bit more time to cook. I recommend dpad for the aiming you will be doing but not the steam controller dpad. For some reason it hurt my fingers to use?
It's basically a mish-mash of Genesis games rolled into one thing. It's got the world atmosphere and chunky sprite art of Ristar, the battle mechanics of Gunstar Heroes, and power-ups of Contra, a main character who's basically an ironically quippy take on a 90's game mascot, ann floating feet and white glove hands Reminiscent of the Raymond series. The main character's personality kinda strikes me as Bubsy-like, but if Bubsy was about 10% more rugged (MC is a bounty hunter). Also worth noting is that the cover art features a character who is strikingly similar to Dr. Robotnik, and the MC even rides around in a similar machine to what Robotnik uses, which is no coincidence given what this game was clearly gong for. Ristar+Gunstar+Contra+Bubsy+Raymond+Sonic= 6 game influences in this one game. And yes, it's fun, and very much does feel very close to a legit Sega Genesis game.
At a 90% sale discount, I'd say it's worth for an afternoon, but there's so much wrong going on here not a lot little done right. The game is nearly devoid of any challenge up until last stage (more on that later). 90% of bosses are all about just "dash right/shoot/dash left/shoot repeat". Homing missile is so much better than all other weapons that you don't even need to use other weapons (though some have very specific situational advantages). Bosses take too long to die even more considering all of them have just 1 or 2 attacks repeating over, over and over. The dialogues are absolutely annoying that even skipping them takes too long (And who had the BRILLIANT idea of having title appearing over the shoot'em up levels covering up the screen?), the heat mechanic is nothing but annoying and feels out of place And then comes that last stage, where I would expect a difficulty spike. But then something comes clear: The devs had no idea of how to properly design the game. They had a very strong base here, but they obviously didn't know how to design stages/bosses around it, and the last stage made this very obvious. The only thing they could do to make the game "feel" hard was to throw a lot of stuff and hope the player can use the armor/health to deal with all before the next armor bonus. Absolutely no sense of pace, finesse, flow, nada. Just... throw a lot of stuff on screen and hope for the best. And this is the summary of the level design/boss design/enemy design, it feels like stuff are thrown without any thought or finesse. As for the good... love the reference to Alien Soldier and Gunstar Heroes, though they are just references, the game throws some variety (Though the T-Rex level is dumb as hell for a couple of reasons), and the graphics are pretty nice. I really didn't hate the game but...it felt like such a huge wasted opportunity. Yet, since it goes for sale constantly, Getting it cheap is a fair price for a nice rainy afternoon.
