fine little game, but one of the shortest games ive ever played too the game gets worse on average as it goes on, with the game just spamming more and more enemies on screen, its mostly manageable but sometimes it feels impossible to properly dodge everything its throwing at you bosses are alright, simple but they do the job, really not much to say about this game and for some reason they hired arin hanson to do some of the voice work, despite him not being a very good voice actor, everyone else does a decent job for what i assume is meant to be a very intentionally cheesy set of performances meant to be overly exaggerated parody the fact there's a curvy furry wolf oc character amongst everyone else in the game being so grotesque and unnatural is probably the funniest joke in the whole game 6/10
It's basically a mish-mash of Genesis games rolled into one thing. It's got the world atmosphere and chunky sprite art of Ristar, the battle mechanics of Gunstar Heroes, and power-ups of Contra, a main character who's basically an ironically quippy take on a 90's game mascot, ann floating feet and white glove hands Reminiscent of the Raymond series. The main character's personality kinda strikes me as Bubsy-like, but if Bubsy was about 10% more rugged (MC is a bounty hunter). Also worth noting is that the cover art features a character who is strikingly similar to Dr. Robotnik, and the MC even rides around in a similar machine to what Robotnik uses, which is no coincidence given what this game was clearly gong for. Ristar+Gunstar+Contra+Bubsy+Raymond+Sonic= 6 game influences in this one game. And yes, it's fun, and very much does feel very close to a legit Sega Genesis game.
At a 90% sale discount, I'd say it's worth for an afternoon, but there's so much wrong going on here not a lot little done right. The game is nearly devoid of any challenge up until last stage (more on that later). 90% of bosses are all about just "dash right/shoot/dash left/shoot repeat". Homing missile is so much better than all other weapons that you don't even need to use other weapons (though some have very specific situational advantages). Bosses take too long to die even more considering all of them have just 1 or 2 attacks repeating over, over and over. The dialogues are absolutely annoying that even skipping them takes too long (And who had the BRILLIANT idea of having title appearing over the shoot'em up levels covering up the screen?), the heat mechanic is nothing but annoying and feels out of place And then comes that last stage, where I would expect a difficulty spike. But then something comes clear: The devs had no idea of how to properly design the game. They had a very strong base here, but they obviously didn't know how to design stages/bosses around it, and the last stage made this very obvious. The only thing they could do to make the game "feel" hard was to throw a lot of stuff and hope the player can use the armor/health to deal with all before the next armor bonus. Absolutely no sense of pace, finesse, flow, nada. Just... throw a lot of stuff on screen and hope for the best. And this is the summary of the level design/boss design/enemy design, it feels like stuff are thrown without any thought or finesse. As for the good... love the reference to Alien Soldier and Gunstar Heroes, though they are just references, the game throws some variety (Though the T-Rex level is dumb as hell for a couple of reasons), and the graphics are pretty nice. I really didn't hate the game but...it felt like such a huge wasted opportunity. Yet, since it goes for sale constantly, Getting it cheap is a fair price for a nice rainy afternoon.
Devs doesn't care about the game, in Laboratorium 1 there is an old bug that happend to me and other players, and they dont care at all
everything about the game was so good in the first few stages but the lategame gets kinda unfair and that's on normal. it's not a skill issue, the attack patters are very difficult to dodge, combined with the dash having spam-prevention (sparky gets exhausted quickly when dashing back and forth) it's not very fun. the final boss of the game is also not the greatest with the attack patterns. had to lower the difficulty from normal to easy just to finish it, i can't even begin to imagine what the game is like on hard difficulty. the only "saving" grace of the game is the lack of a lives system, which would be borderline insanity to implement to a game where literally everything shoots a bullt at your face.
Spectacular Sparky is a 2D Platformer/ Shoot Em Up. I beat it in one sitting and could not believe it. The game has so much executed so well it kept me going for the entire time. The best way I can put this is SS is like if Ristar from the Sega Genesis Era and Arcade Contra had a baby. It's graphics are very reminiscent to Ristar. However, there is more to the eye about this game then a cute bunny. YOU You play as a psychopathic mutated Rayman looking rabbit that works as a mercenary for a PIG SHARK, you read that right a PIG...SHARK. Sparky wants nothing more then to KILL KILL KILL...he also likes collecting a hefty bounty after a fun-filled day of straight up murder. COMBAT SYSTEM It's like a run and gun and you have a stamina meter and a HEAT meter where your power ups for your guns will explode if you do not stop repeatedly shooting. On regular ammo your gun will slow down and almost stop when hitting major HEAT. You have a huge dash that uses your stanima, you will use this dash strategically to dodge and when backed up in a corner by enemies. LEVELS You will play through various different worlds and each level in that world has a boss you need to KILL. The final boss of the world is what you are collecting the massive bounty from, they are a bit harder. It's not until the final level that there is a MASSIVE difficulty spike, I'm talking leagues harder. I went through the whole game just dying a bit, then when getting through the final world I died over 30 different times and almost threw my controller out the window. I mean they just throw every enemy at you multiple times till the screen is almost unreadable. The bosses have steroids and 5 hour energy and are much faster then before. STILL beating the game on standard mode unlocks FRENZY MODE where your guns do not heat up and you have unlimited stamina and all levels are unlocked for your choosing on FRENZY MODE. However, on FRENZY MODE your health will go down over time so the game becomes a timed 2D Boomer Shooter. FULL VOICED All characters are fully voiced which I absolutely loved. Even if Sparky is straight up trigger happy his voice is still so lovable and the dialogue is very comedic. OVERALL Pretty Pretty Good. I loved it, the graphics, the shooting, the acting, the bosses and the platforming. They are executed beautifully and I would love a Spectacular Sparky 2!!!
