Space Mercs is an extreme arcade space combat game where the amount of projectiles and lasers on-screen is only toppled by the amount of stars in the universe! Will you be able to complete all the mercenary missions and become the best pilot in the Galaxy?

Old school space shooter with amazing graphics and smooth gameplay 10/10 :) PS: Linux support done right!

And of course all that mechanics of money, improving weapons et. al is present on the game, which makes it even more engaging. The game runs with 700 fps on my NVIDIA GTX 1070, it is made for low spec PCs but nevertheless has great graphics, so it is smooth as hell.
I don't want to give a negative review but I do think it needs a lot of polish before it's ready for prime time. There's no information as to what the different reticles mean and combat seems very unevenly balanced. There are scads of enemies that all seem to have an instant lock on you and it's hard to match their speed or manoeuvre for effective/fun dog-fighting. I'm sure it'll improve but I'm going to wait awhile before playing again.
Uh, really surprised at the positive reviews on a game of this price. The visuals are blurry, the UI and menus look very low quality and hashed together. There are spelling errors in the text of the mission briefings! Actual gameplay isn't very fun. I played through the tutorial and the first 2 missions, and it was enough to let me know this wasn't for me. Controller was supported, but the tutorial still only gave me the keyboard controls (so I just had to figure it out for myself). The "procedurally generated epic space battles" that you can just jump into are actually locked until you finish some part of the campaign game, which is so frustrating and difficult that I didn't get to see them. The sound design is horrible, there is only one sound for each weapon in the game, so you're just hearing Zoop Zoop Zoop over and over again until you kill an enemy. In addition, there is no sound mix, so some noises play super loud and other are barely audible. The AI is exceptionally basic. In the second mission you have to join the something-or-other government and the whos-a-ma-whatsit forces defending a blockade from pirates (there's no blockade, its just you in a bunch of asteroids). I failed this mission repeatedly until I discovered the best strategy was just not to move. Start mission, don't turn on engines, just rotate on the spot and blast the enemies as they fly mindlessly at you. The occasional on-the-spot barrel roll gets you out of any trouble. It's tedious, but much more effective than flying. The 3rd mission (an escort / defence mission) we finally get to the afore-mentioned Epic Space Battles. Which basically means that it spawns about 20 of the same enemy ship all around you all playing the same 1 PEW PEW PEW sound and they all shoot at you at the same time. It's impossible to understand what is actually going on from the rudimentary UI. You're just being shot from all directions while you try and figure out whats going on. This is a *great* first attempt at a space shooter game for a hobbyist working in Unity, but it is *nowhere near* the polish or quality I would expect of a title asking for nearly 10GBP of my hard earned money.
I'm surprised by the positive reviews. Quality is really poor. The ship flies like a piece of junk, and not a fun piece of junk. The cockpit instruments do nothing, the UI is weird and unhelpful, the enemies take no actions other than to auto-lock and shoot at you. No dogfighting, no clever maneuvering or anything. Space Fighter is free to play and it's better than this. $10 is steep for what you get. I really wanted to like this because of the promised massive space battles but from what I've seen already I know they're not going to be worth playing. Really disappointing.
First of all this is an awesome, fun little gem. I remember playing through the original FreeSpace back in the day and this brings back all those fun memories. The developer has obviously put a ton of love into this game and has been really responsive. The good stuff:

I love that it performs well and looks great, even with a low end igpu.
Not a huge time suck. Easy to hop into and out of for a quick mission.
Works perfectly out of the box on linux and the dev is a supporter of the platform.
A few suggestions:

A range indicator for enemies might be nice to tell who to prioritize when trying to snipe at a distance (maybe this is something you get with upgrades?)
The difficulty jump from the tutorial to the first mission was a bit steep for me, but I haven't played this kind of game for a while.
The tutorial might want to include some direction on what the threat indicators mean. (Red arrows?, Red Fog?, Beeping?)
Overall, the game is fun. If you like space shooters, buy it.
Pretty fun little game. Intended as a bit of shoot-n-fly-n-go-back-to-work kinda game. No frills, no fuss, just have a little dogfight during your coffee break. Come back now and again to level up your weps etc, and slowly make your way through the missions... It's not X-Wing or Wing Commander (yet)... But it's in constant improvement, and the dev really listens to all feedback. BTW: You can remap the controls to whatever you like, including controllers, joysticks, whatever... Ignore the muppety negative review, person probably didn't find the options menu, on the main page.
I can't really recommend this game at the moment because it feels incredibly bare bones. On top of that, the combat just isn't engaging. Enemies just fly in straight lines while sometimes shooting at you. There's no dogfighting to speak of. If it gets any kind of updates to make it better down the road, that'd be great. For now though, if you want a space combat fix, look elsewhere. Everspace comes to mind. Why this game has as many positive reviews as it does confuses me.
It's been a long time since I enjoyed a space shooter, but this one kept me playing even after failing the same mission three times. For me, that's a new record!
