3/5 - Average This game is as mid as they come. The production values make it look good at first, but then about 1/3 into it you realize that the whole thing is very repetitive, both the gameplay and chapter structure, so it gets old very fast. The game is about 30% too long for it's own good. Combat is a big problem, it is based around unskippable arenas where you face 2-3 waves of enemies coming from all directions. Every arena feels like a hurdle blocking your way that you're forced to get through, it would have been better if we fought random enemies while exploring. I also had problems getting engaged with the story because the main plot is very thin. Instead, you spend the game listnening or watching stories of other characters through their personnal issues, so you never really connect with the main plot as much. At some point you just stop caring and just want it to end. There's also graphic performance issues, there's a lot of microstutters that can't be completely avoided when in open areas with lots of background objects. Even people with the latest video cards can't get around it, you can have 100+FPS but still get a lot of microstutter. Regardless, the game has heart and the music is good, the gameplay is just poorly executed. You should wait until it is at least 50% on sale to buy it.

A heavy and rich plot that covers heavy topics, but it is beautifully written in a way that acknowledges atrocities that were man made. The graphics and detail in each location and character amplify the story.
Honestly? One of my favorite games of all time. As someone who has roots in the south, this game speaks to my very soul. Southern folklore is some of the best out there and not many forms of media take the risk in portraying it. As far as I'm aware, there is no other game like this, and that makes it that much more powerful. The setting, the art style, the level design, character design, the level of detail put into every little thing, the voice acting, the soundtrack... it's all immaculate. Only thing i wish the game had was a little more depth in the skill tree and with combat overall, but It's far from being bad. It's very rare that a game evokes such an emotional response from me, and this one hit me hard. Congrats to the devs, you've absolutely outdone yourselves, you should be proud. I don't know how well the game was received or did sales wise, but I'd do anything for some sort of sequel. Either way, thank you for this piece of art.
This was a very unique and artistic looking game, I very much enjoyed the Lore and the all of the art. The outfits, characters designs, songs and backdrops where all very interesting and imaginative. It Did have quite a few darker themes so people should be aware of that for kids, but other than that I loved paying this game and it inspired me so much with the imagery that I have been doing paintings based of the art and scenes from the game.
Driven by a strong story and very good voice acting, this was overall an excellent game. Combat mechanics were a bit janky at times though I was using keyboard/mouse. Would probably be better with a controller. Music is amazing throughout. Overall, it's very well paced and fairly short (apx 15 hours) - so nice game to pick up in between bigger titles.
Awesome soundtrack Very Good Platforming Great Story Combat could be a bit better Overall, a very enjoyable experience. Hope to see more games like this in the future!
A hidden gem
I had this game on my wishlist for a while because I had heard that it wasn't particularly good, and I was pretty disappointed by the developers previous game, We Happy Few. I finally gave in and bought South of Midnight anyway and I am glad I did! It's a straightforward, linear action-adventure game that you can complete in 10-15 hours. It's good a good (if somewhat confusing at times) storyline, a nice gimmick where the cutscenes are rendered in a faux stop-motion style, and decent action. I was particularly taken by the set pieces. It's not often you see a game take place in the american south, at least not in this way. All in all, this is a solid 7/10 and a game I would recommend buying, at least on sale.
