Reviews
When I finished South of Midnight, I wasn't exactly sure how I felt about it. I will echo the same sentiments you will see here, absolutely stunning visuals, a rocking soundtrack, and honestly, a very fun movement system and boss fights. It is a game that is ripe with potential. The things I didn't find very engaging came down my experience with the narrative and combat. I found Hazel to be a very clueless protagonist, who had far too many ambient voice lines about being confused and verbalizations about obvious hints for the player to follow. I found this aspect to be quite annoying and discouraged exploration of the honestly quite large zones. I often had to remind myself that Hazel is in high school and this would usually subside my annoyance for a time. As for the narrative, I found parts to have easily identifiable twists in which I would figure out the next story beat full zones before Hazel came to the same conclusion, which made her dialogue hard to listen to at times. The hit box around Hazel is larger than her model, which often results in you being hit unfairly, or you completely missing attacks. It makes some of the combat feel really frustrating to get through, and there are a LOT of these fights. You can simply cheese all of these fights with the ground pound attack (thank me later) or by enabling fight skips in settings. Now, you might read this part of the review and think "well obviously this person is saying it isn't worth my time." woah woah woah. Not at all. I think South of Midnight has its places of frustration, but what it lacks in these areas, it MORE than makes up for in voice acting, thoughtful and accurate historical folklore, and out of this world soundtrack. It's been months since I've finished this game, and I keep thinking about it. It is a masterclass in humble storytelling. Sure, some of the beats are predictable, but it's world is fun to live in and interact with, and it's message is heartwarming. It's movement system is fluid and super fun, and it's attention to detail is par to none. I encourage you to treat this game like you would a good book or a movie you've watched a thousand times. It is best enjoyed as someone along for this ride with Hazel. Let South of Midnight transport you. Enjoy every zone, appreciate just how much detail the developers have put into this world. This is a game made with immense love, and it shows. South of Midnight is a movie you can play and have fun doing it. If you have a weekend, I would absolutely recommend this for your consideration. The team put their hearts and souls into this game, and while it has it's flaws, it manages to be interesting, thought provoking, and best of all, fun.

The narrative is good. Decent platforming, but the combat is repetitive as hell. Navigate, get your ass kicked in an arena, navigate, another arena. It wouldn't be so frustrating if you were given more health refills and the enemies didn't overwhelm you with cheap ass attacks.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. It's such an unbelievably beautiful love letter to the United States' South The creators absolutely poured their entire hearts and souls into this project and it really shows I'm near to tears every time I play, it's so incredible.
Great game. Not so much for adults i'd say . I played the first few hours on PC with keyboard and mouse . The game . like so many others , goes into what I call " Keyboard Calestetics" where you have to press several keys at once . For adult hands this is quite annoying. So I turned game play over to my 10 year old granddaughter and smaller hands.. Being much easier to navigate , she loves it ! Not a kids game ? Some profanity and emotional narratives but nothing beyond everyday real life , unless you live in a convent . I have stayed present during all the game play. We choose to skip the many and laborious combat ! Developers , you might want to clean up the instances of bad language and market this game for all ages . It is delightful and lots of adventurous fun .
Sick of this stupid ♥♥♥♥. It's basically every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game at this point. Devs can't launch a game that doesn't run like ♥♥♥♥ on half of their customers PC's. I'm sitting here with a 9070xt and so used to this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that I'm always ready to play a game on lowest settings if it means that the framerate will be stable and reasonable, but NO, that's not possible for the majority of releases these days. This this unacceptable. There are not even Engine.ini tweaks that can save this one. mother ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ just garbaged it with object loading or some ♥♥♥♥ most likely. same old story, different ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game - devs don't know how to optimise and probably consider it just 'polish' for post launch dev IF it looks worth doing from a business perspective. probably. I swear all a dev has to do these days to release a successful game is actually ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ simple, you don't even need to be original, you can: 1) copy other successful gameplay mechanics (in this case soulsish action combat & basic 3d platforming) 2) have an interesting narrative but remember to pace the gameplay with cinematics so your players are/by far mostly playing instead of watching 3) get your head of of the ass of your design team and prioritise your game actually running properly over visuals 100% of the time that's it! successful game. congratulations, you did it. but can they manage it? NO of course they ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ can't. not having 'stunning visuals' perhaps seems like too much of a sign of cheapness or low quality for them to even consider that *maybe* the game actually running properly might be critically important and even games designed for PS5 console muggles first seem to ignore the concept because those people can just turn on 'performance mode' otherwise known as "the devs couldn't be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bothered" mode. Not that I'd ever buy a console to experience that nonsense. my last point for my review - stop pretending that emulating the right analog stick for the mouse is an acceptable way of porting to PC! it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ not. you know it isn't. Doing that reeks of the opinion that controller is somehow a better control system. ofc it isn't. you wouldn't drive your car with mostly just your thumbs, would you?
