Great concept for a game. Good graphics and music. However, the music system is linked to the bpm of the song, not the real groove that the player hears. That means that I'm grooving along deep in the pocket and the game is like "nah, you missed the rhythm." I'm like bro, I've been a musician for 21 years. I'm not goated, but I have an idea of what I'm talking about.
I don't have much experience with either looter-shooters or rhythm games, so I don't have a lot to compare it to. It turns out that I might be very into both, because I put almost five hours into it the first day I played it. There is something really satisfying about learning the choreography. As the levels progress there are the expected increases in numbers of enemies and complexity of traps. The weapon and equipment system gives a manageable, but interesting set of choices in terms of play style, such as balancing weapon range against spread. New characters unlock even more dramatic options, such as trading speed for strength. I was also very impressed with the music so far. I was honestly expecting a lot of repetitive dance/pop music, which, honestly, I would've been fine with, but it turns out that as you move through the regions, the music changes dramatically, and there are hints that pretty much every genre, from classical to jazz to metal to pop to hip hop to folk to ??? are represented throughout the game. Even if I didn't love the game, I would probably keep playing just for the soundtrack!
This is not a game I can recommend. If you want a rhythm game, go play Crypt of the Necrodancer, not this. This says it is a "looter shooter" which is true to some degree, but you are constrained to levels on a map, no quests or anything. The story is horrible and the gameplay is mid at best. It really feels like it is missing something, although the aesthetics of it all are quite pretty
I bought at 95% off on sale, and it was worth every % of that discount. This game is very "not fully thought out", even to a dangerous degree and I will explain. The bullet hell shooting is okay, even feels good at times, but it's not anything special. I want to talk about MUSIC. So you play a Diablo style procedural generated map attached to a biome and song. The song plays on loop while you're in mission with a beat map that gives you bonuses for performing actions on beat. Cool! So what happens when the song ends and loops again? Well err.. the beat map goes wonky for a bit while it catches onto the new loop. Custom Music is available, you can load up your own music as missions. The game will scan your songs and generate missions accordingly. Unfortunatly the algorithm used for this isn't accurate enough (you WILL get wonky beat maps), this is made worse in that there is no in game map editor for custom music. You can fix wonky beat maps using Audacity, but not having an in game editor currently is a big miss. The standard music is mostly okay, except, there's something I just cant put my finger on, maybe it's that one cooking channel on Youtube.. hmmm.. Oh yeah! So what I think these devs have done (if you're a content creator or streamer etc, this is very dangerous), instead of finding and working with artists/labels to directly license music for the game, they're using a music library service like Epidemic Sound etc to have music in the game, but bypass all the other normal legworks that goes with that. What that means is that when you stream this game as a player YOU will get copyright notices from the music library services then the devs will expect YOU to go and get whitelisting from these services on your own.... and that just kinda doesn't sit nice with me (trust me on this, whitelisting is a pain, and whitelisting with music library services can often involve additional fees). So if playing on stream, I'd strongly suggest using safer custom music only. This game has co-op, yay. Customs are not available in co-op, sadge. If you're a person willing to open up Audacity and generate beat-tables, there is some fun to be had here with Custom maps. However overall, this could have been a much better game. Good ideas, that were unfortunately not fully thought out and thus executed only half way... buy on heavy sale only, or just play Hades etc with your own music in winamp etc...
This game has a great concept, and the gameplay is pretty fun. However, I feel that it lacks the polish necessary for a finished product. This is especially obvious in the UI, which, in my opinion, looks bland and uninspired. It feels like I'm playing the early access beta version of a game rather than a finished product. If it had more visual polish, more depth, and enemy variety, then I would recommend it.
The idea/concept of this game is great but it is poorly executed. The features that are meant make the gameplay unique just ends up making things tedious and boring.
