Low-res Atari graphics horror game with great soundtrack. It was like reading a book and letting your imagination run wild. Highly recommend.
Mildly successful at being a FAITH-alike, Soul Catcher takes what was cool about FAITH and tries to make it it's own. This game is obviously very inspired by FAITH. It tries to differentiate itself by having multiple companion options that change some item placement throughout. I dunno. Soul Catcher has kind of an MSPaint jank charm to it that kept me playing for about 2 hours. Is it worth the asking price? No. Sorry. Knock a buck or two off of there. Wait for a sale. Soul Catcher is a curiosity, a glimpse at the baby steps of a new wave in horror, where old is new again and everything is so. dang. crunchy. I call these baby steps because what's on display here is almost wholesale forgery, or to be kinder, an homage. Hopefully devs embrace the Atari/C64/etc. aesthetic without stealing wholesale from an established and respected dev. Let's all hope real hard.
Great little game. I'm terrible at the puzzles though so needed some help to solve them. RIP sheep. Great Doggo.
Yapımı 14 yıl süren düşük çözünürlüklü bir korku oyunu olan Soul Catcher, oyuncunun kendisini iblis tapan bir tarikattan sevdiği birini kurtarmaya çalışan kabus gibi uzak bir dağın yamacında bulan altı karakterden birinin rolünü üstlenmesini sağlıyor. Konakta gezinin, bulmacaları çözün ve pusuda bekleyen dehşetlerden kaçının. Gittiğiniz yere , yürüdüğünüz yola dikkat edin. Kimseye karışmayın.
Good, well written game.
It’s nice to play a game that doesn’t hand everything to you on a plate. In an age of ultra-high budget productions I’m reminded that sometimes simplicity can produce a compelling game. Some talented individuals with a story to tell, maybe a few puzzles and jump scares along the way make a surprisingly compelling game. Because of the whole horror retro vibe of the game this is definitely one to play with headphones. I have to admit that I took a while to complete this, probably because I’m not that great at puzzle games. I have to admit there were periods of frustration when I was stuck on a few puzzles but to me that makes it all the sweeter when you finally figure it out. Don’t get me wrong, the game isn’t without its flaws. The low-res aesthetic certainly won’t appeal to everyone. Sometimes it feels like the difficulty of the puzzles can suddenly jump without much of a ramp up to them. I think an optional hint mode as an option within each puzzle could help. Checkpoints need to be more evenly spaced as I had to play for a good 30 minutes before I hit my first one. For what the game is, when it was floated on the steam store I thought it was a little expensive. But hey what are Steam sales for! All in all this game is a great reminder that you don’t necessarily need a multi-million pound budget and photo realistic graphics to make a compelling story that’s enjoyable (if a little scary) to play through. Now I just need to complete play throughs with all the other characters XD. P.S I’m just going to put this out there, but I think this has the makings of a great mobile game.
Yes, I'm aware of the ALL CAPS game this title is similar to. Are there games out there like Rogue? Yes, a lot. That is why "Rogue-like" is now a genre. Am I going to make a federal case out of inspiration? No, no I am not. What I will do is say that this game is awesome. It sets up its own unsettling folklore-themed flavor, presented in classic retro-PC style, with some pretty clever puzzles. There are multiple characters, and multiple endings depending on what you do and/or the order you do things in. Game runs fine, no bugs that I noticed, framerate is fine. Character moves a little slow, but whatever. Actually builds tension in certain areas, honestly. Definitely recommend for indie horror fans.
"Soul Catcher" is a garbage tier 2D retro pixelcrap horror adventure game. The developer has the weirdest flex here, they claim it took them 14 years to make something that looks like it was rejected from the Atari 2600 for being too ugly. This is absolutely not something to boast about... if I had worked for 14 years on anything and it came out looking this bad, I'd sell my house and go live in a cave and never show my face to the world again. I certainly wouldn't burn $100 dumping it on Steam Direct. We all make mistakes, but not everyone publishes them on a platform with 120 million people. What do you do in the game? 2D pixelcrap adventuring with a bit of cringey fan-fiction e-book writing. Te subject is a group of characters stuck in a mansion on a remote mountainside attempting to save a loved one from a demon-worshipping cult. You navigate a mansion, complete puzzles, and avoid lurking horrors. The gameplay, however, is sadly repetitive and the visuals are severely limited by the game's low resolution. It's important to stress that the technical implementation and game design aspects of narrative and gameplay here are even worse than the crap visuals. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. This game is fairly dated at 5 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. It's free... now, but it wasn't before. The developer was charging $4 USD for this. Talk about delusions of grandeur. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It's a nice gesture for the game to be given away for free, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. It's also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who paid money for this... nobody got refunded. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. There's no financial cost up-front, but you'd still be spending your time and a little hard drive space on a product that's far from the best. There's thousands of better alternatives on Steam.
