TAKE CARE OF THE DOG is a pretty short game I made while recovering from the surgery I had after I broke my arm
(I lost my movements, but I am slowly getting 'em back!!)
A new TAKE CARE OF is being developed based on your feedback! Thank you so much for the kind words.

The only horror in this game is the fact that it sucks and that no one is playing it. ….would be quite the opening line for a review , but I didn’t say that. My brother said that, while watching me play. And unfortunately, my thoughts aren’t all that different. It’s just, it’s really hard to write properly about anything with a game like Take Care of the Dog, because there’s almost nothing to talk about! You can easily beat this in less than ten minutes, and it most definitely took me longer to write this review than it did to see the entire game. Although, I admit the game has its moments… or, more like, moment. Anyway let’s forget about all of that and LET’S TAKE CARE OF THE DOG!! This is going to be so sweet and fun and wholesome and nothing bad is going to happen at all ever again!! Look at that fuzzy face!! Isn’t he the cutest thing? oh, oh, now he wants you to follow him outside!! So adorable! The game goes like this for roughly half its total runtime:
five minutes.
You follow the dog, you pet the dog, you play fetch with the dog,
you go down into your maze-like backrooms feeling basement to find food and water for your dog
----wait what? What’s the deal with the basement? Everything is all dark and cramped that I feel like anything’s gonna jump out at me at any moment! Plus, every hallway looks more or less the same as the one before it! I’m definitely going to get lost! Why does this suddenly feel like a horror game??? …..I should probably address the hideous elephant hiding in the room now. I’m about to spoil the second half twist, which, need I remind you, lasts less than five minutes. So, after finding some water in the basement, you go back into the kitchen to find your dog… is not your dog. What replaced him kind of looks like a dog, but he’s definitely NOT your dog.
He looks like a man in a poorly fit fursuit, sitting on his knees, with unnatural red glowing eyes. The fat of his misshapen body just seems to… flow wherever it can.
He definitely would’ve gotten a jump out of me if I didn’t already get the monster spoiled from some ♥♥♥♥ online (although, I was spoiled by a Youtube thumbnail and not some idiot reviewer). Anyway, he talks too. In a creepily artificial sounding voice, he tells you to
go back down into the basement, find the butchers knife, and kill the dog.
And THIS is where you find where your actual dog is hiding. he’s just been chilling in the basement! And now you’re given a CHOICE:
Kill your dog, or kill the creepy furry.
….why would anyone pick the first option if you’re given the second option too.
If you kill your dog, you get the BAD ENDING, but if you kill the strange intruder, you get the GOOD ENDING!!
…..that’s it! that’s the entire game! GG man whoopdeedoo! I’ve been working as a volunteer at an activity center for a few years now, and I’ve seen the kids there play so many games that are exactly like this; minus the horror part. Dime a dozen “edutainment” with the simplest of goals, the most basic of gameplay, and graphics that look nearly thirty years out of date. So… if Take Care of the Dog was trying to emulate that genre, then it does a spectacular job! The game looks silly. I like how every single thing you’re supposed to interact with is just a low-res PNG of the real life thing, like a ball or a can of dog food. The dog only has three poses: sitting, running, and sleeping. While the
“dog”
only has one pose:
sitting there. staring. menacingly. (okay, he really is pretty darn creepy).
The sound effects and music are hilariously over-the-top and cheery, which makes the sudden shift to horror work even better when the music just stops. I kind of wish your character could move faster, and had an actual neck. You can’t move the camera up or down for whatever reason. But, like, the game did what it wanted to do. Edutainment so convincing, it’ll give kids nightmares. Some games aren’t meant to be fully reviewed. I’m sure Take Care of the Dog was made by like one guy for fun in his spare time, and I can respect that. However, did I like the game?...not really, no. It’s just another short “shocking” horror game, like countless others on Steam. I wanna go pet my dog now.

Developed and published by bodinhe, TAKE CARE OF THE DOG is a short indie horror adventure that transforms an ordinary responsibility into an increasingly unsettling experience. At first glance, the premise appears deceptively wholesome. Players are tasked with following a lively dog, gathering useful items, and performing simple chores, including fetching water from a basement. These objectives seem harmless on paper, yet the game deliberately surrounds them with an uneasy atmosphere that suggests something far more disturbing lies beneath the surface. Rather than relying on elaborate mechanics, the experience focuses on suspense, curiosity, and subtle storytelling, encouraging players to keep moving forward while constantly questioning what is really happening. The game's greatest strength is its ability to create tension through familiar situations instead of overwhelming players with nonstop scares. Every task feels intentionally mundane, but the quiet presentation slowly erodes any sense of comfort. The playful behavior of the dog provides moments of warmth, making the contrast with the darker environment even more effective. Exploration becomes the central gameplay mechanic, with players searching for objects, observing their surroundings, and piecing together clues through environmental details instead of lengthy dialogue or obvious narrative exposition. This restrained approach allows the mystery to develop naturally and rewards players who pay close attention to the world around them. Visually, TAKE CARE OF THE DOG embraces a retro low-polygon art style that evokes the appearance of classic 1990s computer games. Instead of chasing realism, the minimalist graphics contribute to the unsettling tone by making ordinary locations feel strangely unfamiliar. The simple textures, subdued lighting, and sparse environments create a sense of isolation that perfectly complements the psychological horror elements. This nostalgic presentation is more than an artistic preference—it becomes an important storytelling tool, allowing players to focus on atmosphere and imagination rather than graphical fidelity. The result is a memorable visual identity that feels both charming and unnerving at the same time. Gameplay remains intentionally accessible throughout the adventure. Controls are straightforward, interactions are easy to understand, and progression is driven by exploration rather than complex systems or challenging puzzles. The experience is designed to be completed in a single sitting, making it an ideal choice for players looking for a concise but engaging horror story. Audio also plays a significant role in maintaining immersion, as subtle environmental sounds and quiet moments heighten anticipation without depending solely on loud jump scares. The developer's recommendation to play with headphones and in a dark room aligns perfectly with the game's emphasis on atmosphere, allowing every sound and visual cue to have a stronger emotional impact. Its relatively brief runtime may leave some players wishing for a deeper narrative or additional gameplay variety, particularly those who enjoy longer horror adventures with multiple endings or more intricate mechanics. However, the focused scope ultimately works to the game's advantage by preventing its central idea from becoming repetitive. The experience delivers its mystery with confidence and maintains a steady pace from beginning to end. Knowing that the project was created during the developer's recovery from a broken arm also highlights the dedication behind its creation and makes its polished atmosphere even more impressive. It serves as a promising foundation for future entries that could expand upon its ideas and storytelling techniques. Overall, TAKE CARE OF THE DOG is an effective psychological horror experience that proves compelling gameplay does not require complicated mechanics or extended playtime. By combining an innocent premise with growing tension, retro-inspired visuals, and immersive environmental storytelling, it delivers a memorable adventure that lingers after the credits roll. While its short duration limits the depth of its narrative, the game succeeds in creating a unique identity through mood, pacing, and clever use of contrast. Players who appreciate atmospheric indie horror and subtle storytelling will find plenty to enjoy in this compact but thoughtfully designed experience. Rating: 8/10
My dog started playing Weezer at full blast. I did what any sane individual would do, broke all his albums. As you could imagine, it didn't end well for one of us. We all know the greatest band of all time is, well still Weezer. It's not my fault my dog had all signed copies and I wanted them for myself.
arf arf :3
honestly i was having a really bad night like the usual screaming and crying and ♥♥♥♥ and i just wanted to take care of a cute dog and this made it worse 10/10
Great game, I liked it, but I was curious about one thing, that is, the brick out the backyard, I thought it could be picked up and thrown against the cracked wall down in the basement to open some secret room or whatever. But I couldn't. Anyways, good game, I had a bit of fun playing it.
hmu for all your dogsitting needs
