Sorcery Jokers starts out very slow. Enough that I was unimpressed and getting bored fast with the slice of life events. However once the first tragedy hits, things start to get really interesting, and it remains that way till it's conclusion. I recommend sticking with it past the first chapter before passing judgement.

I never imagined you could fit so much pointless filler in a story. 6 out of 7 hours I have played to this moment were full of pointless scenes, contributing nothing to the story, characters, or the world. Each stretched to the limit. Even simplest comic relief dialoues between characters are pumped full of lines like some sort of high school student end of term paper. What little good story there is, is split between different character points of view, which waters down the story even more, nearly losing its already faint coherence. Honestly, this is first time where im reading a line, and just outright not remembering it 10 seconds later. There were even moments where I was close to falling asleep. Setting seems cool, visuals are great. Effects are rather poor, very short, often put on a loop or just repeated multiple times throughout the dialogue. I will keep playing in hope it gets better and makes me change this review. edit 23h in: Story flows a bit better when told with just 2 points of view but there is just too much padding. Combat sequences are just 5 effects repeated on and on but last good 10-15 minutes. I regret I kept playing. Also it crashed at least five times, no error nothing, just closed to desktop.

interesting Story :) i liked it ^^
NOTE: This review contains spoilers. If you want to know if it's worth the price of admission, yes it is. *REVIEW STARTS HERE* I've had a strange history with sorcery jokers. I read a lot of VNs when I was a teenager, and after playing MUV-LUV Alternative, I wanted another one to read. I found this on Steam and bought it on the Steam Holiday Sale of 2020. I started it and then read through some of it... and then stopped about an hour in. Started it Again January of this year... and stopped about an hour in. Resolved to finish the game since I bought it, I was left with a good story that had me hooked until I saw the end credits. Sorcery Jokers is a Action Visual Novel about a world where magic is real (it's the tagline of the VN, actually). Magic was thrust onto the world suddenly, and Magic has been ingrained into everyday life. Technology relies on Magic to function, and there are even schools that are dedicated to studying magic despite it not being in the world for that long. There are people who use Magic, Casters, and people who cannot. The story of Sorcery Jokers is presented in a unique way that I found made the pacing really well done. Initially, you read a prologue that introduces you to our two main protagonists, Haruto and Senri. After that, you are presented with a story tree that lets you experience the events of the story through the eyes of additional characters. Even though for the most part they are a kind of retelling of the same events, the game does a good job of making the scenes feel fresh with the perspective of someone else. Some parts of the different character routes even deviate from what we already know happened and shows what a character was doing in a certain part of the story. I haven't experienced that in a VN before and I felt it made the pacing feel like it kept on track as it doesn't linger with exposition for too long. As for the characters themselves... this is where the weak point of the VN comes in IMO. To me, the saving grace of the entire VN was Senri. Senri was a well crafted, stoic character who has a aloofness that I really liked about him. He was always one step ahead in battles, I loved how he baited his enemies in fights with plans that I did not see coming, how he was deeply analytical about situations, and how philosophical he was when he thought about the people around him. I really enjoyed following Senri's journey, and the ending where we discovered what his true goals were gave a nice finishing touch on the VN. The other characters were... meh to say the least. Asahi was a good character. I thought she had some good scenes and the way she influenced and was devoted to Haruto made me smile while reading. But... there was Haruto himself. For being a protagonist, a lot of the story focuses on him and his point of view. For 90% of the story I found him 100% insufferable. From reviews I have read this seems to be the consensus. Haruto constantly talks about playing fair and justice and doing what is right... but he does so in the most repetitive and annoying way that it makes it hard to read through. "YOU'RE KICKING MY ASS?! YOU'RE NOT PLAYING FAIR?!" (not an actual line, but it may as well be). When he gets over his ♥♥♥♥♥♥ way of thinking near the end of the story He actually becomes a joy to read. The final fight scene was well done and I liked seeing Haruto ♥♥♥♥ the big bad's ♥♥♥♥ up. The rest of the characters are alright. You have Fiona, and Riku, who are good characters that contribute to the overall plot, but they really werent the focus for me. To me, It was really all about Senri and what he had to go through that I liked the most. As this is a battle VN, I can say that the fights are good and exciting. What I liked about them is the frequent change in music (some even mid fight) to highlight the change in the situation. It made reading the fight scenes engaging. They are quick, in your face, and don't drag on forever, which was refreshing to see. Overall, I quite liked this VN. I thought it was good, and well worth the time spent. I would 100% recommend this game, and especially on sale Overall score: Senri/10. (in all seriousness, 8.5/10)
Sorcery Jokers is a decent fantasy battle visual novel, but it has nary an aspect that I don't have mixed feelings about. It's an urban/science fantasy story in a world in which magic is a relatively recent phenomenon—only 12 years prior to the story, some ordinary people started to gain magical abilities. In the present, the government, economy, schools, and more are all in in regard to magic. However, there's a seedy underbelly of plots and conspiracies to the magic world that both protagonists become involved with in some way. Haruto is one of those protagonists. He's a fairly ordinary teen-aged boy with a strong sense of justice, but he attends magic school instead of normal school. While he seems to be the slightly less favored protagonist, I actually enjoyed reading his perspective more. He actually has emotions and an obvious reason to delve deeper into the underground of the magic world, so it was easier to care about what he was doing than it was for the other protagonist Senri. Senri actually does have perhaps even a stronger motivation for his actions than Haruto, but that motivation is unknown to the readers until the last 2% of the story, so I ended up not caring much about his perspective. He's also stoic, calculating, and fairly unemotional, which made it even harder to relate to him. Sorcery Jokers's mystery has layer upon layer, and it was satisfying to watch them peel away to reveal the core of the story. (Side Note: It's small, but I also appreciated how the VN would send me back to the title screen and make me press "START" to continue the story after each act concluded. It was a neat way to use the fact that Sorcery Jokers is also software, not a traditional paper novel.) However, I also felt like the story meandered a bit too much in between each new revelation. In the process of investigating the magical underground, both Haruto and Senri encounter a number of enemies who stand in their way, and whom they must overcome with force. The battles in this battle-heavy VN, though, were a mixed bag. It's easier for me to note which ones were good:
Senri and Fiona's first battle with Inui
and almost all battles in the story's final act. Almost every other battle went in one eye and out the other. The best things I can say about Sorcery Jokers are that it has a strong mystery; Asahi, a prevalent heroine in Haruto's half of the story is an excellent, 10/10 character, with her similarly strong sense of justice and ironclad determination;
Ruu and Rikudou
are pretty good villains; and the story is well-structured, which may seem weird for me to say when I was just complaining about its pacing, but I mean that in the sense that every detail is included for a reason—even minuscule interactions or plot events have some payoff further down the line. Overall though, Sorcery Jokers is okay; its battles—a significant portion of its runtime—are okay, the soundtrack is okay, and any other scenes not related to mystery are okay. It's just okay! 6/10
Riku
