Piko have done it again, they have ruined a retro port. I am not even going to dignify this with a lot of my time so will keep it brief. 1) Forced bilinear/blur/smear filter which can not be disabled. Check out this footage of someone playing it on YouTube and how sharp it would look if Piko were not THAT lazy that they'd offer a simple "filter disable" button. They did on some of their releases but have NEVER updated the ones that don't have the option. It's right there in PCSXR emulation code, all they literally need to do is program a button for the options menu. 10 minutes coding, tops. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx-JRQg6nSg Absolute PROOF that all they do is one basic emulation release and never look at it again. 2) They ported the western release with all story removed even though there is an English patched release out there for the Japanese game 3) No mouse support, so a ball and paddle game with ONE digital speed of movement. You can't make this stuff up. Junkware, not going to give it any more of my time and going straight to returns. It's not even worth keeping this one to play the rom legally as the western version is a joke anyway with digital only control and the story completely removed. Fools. Edit, I gave it a few more minutes because I love breakout/arkanoid style games, especially with power ups, and I am even more disappointed now. The input lag is HORRIBLE, it feels like half a second even if playing with keyboard. I tried some usual nvidia control panel/profile inspector tricks and managed to improve it slightly but it's still way too high for this style of game, clearly an emulation issue. There is no manual of any kind and it actually NEEDS one as this is a breakout style RPG and besides the obvious ones, I have absolutely no idea what the icons mean for the power ups. And no, I could not find a manual anywhere online. Piko really make me sad because they ruin retro games from my childhood and there's NO other legal way to play them on modern systems. You see, if they acquire the license, that's it, it's theirs, and it's not as if some other dev can publish a better version of the game. They ruin almost everything they touch and are maybe even worse than Limited Run Games. I just wish all these titles were released by groups that care about the quality.
Played this game way back for PS1 when i was young, back then there was no save file, you had to just play the whole game out or reset if you wanted to turn the PS off. It was a nice surprise to search this up and it actually be here, on top of that its ability to save and fullscreen is amazing, only downside which i remember this being an issue on PS, was theres no audio tuning. other then that 9/10 great throwback
Alright so I boot up Sorceress Maze thinking “haha childhood game, let’s vibe.” 5 minutes later I’m lost in a maze, out of magic, getting chased by a floating eyeball named Greg (I named him Greg, he didn’t deserve a cooler name). At some point I stepped on a trapdoor, fell into a pit, and screamed so loud my neighbor texted “u good?” No, Jennifer, I’m not. Then some skeleton in a wizard hat rolled up and said “you shouldn’t be here.” Bro I know. I found another lost player named Ellie (shoutout Ellie). We both agreed we had no idea what was going on but it was probably fine. Spoiler: Ellie was not real. I was just drunk. Would recommend if you enjoy: - Being confused - Yelling at inanimate objects - Betrayal via enchanted mirrors - Laughing hysterically while your childhood trauma resurfaces 10/10. Absolute masterpiece.
