Me diverti jogando e amei os personagens 10/10
Recomendo!
I genuinely adore metroidvania's and I'm a big sucker for colourful pixel art, so when i saw Sophie starlight whispers close to its reveal in 2023 it immediately went on my wishlist. It has been there for a long time so I was really excited to finally play it but ngl, i was left incredibly dissapointed. I really hate to be harsh on indie games, especially in a genre that i love but this game really has nothing going for it other than the inarguably gorgeous visuals. If that's all you care for by all means go ahead, the game really does look stunning with lots of colours, incredibly detailed environments and beautiful lighting. There's a lot of attention to detail not only in the backgrounds but also in the foreground, which is rare for a pixel art game and gave this one a lot more depth. Sadly that depth didn't translate to the gameplay systems as everything was both basic and unfun. For starters the controls felt VERY clunky, which is crazy given how few moves you have (other than the many spells, more on that later). You only get a double jump and a dash throughout your 10 hour playthrough, which isn't a lot to work with to make platforming engaging. There isn't even wall climbing so due to this the level design stays incredibly basic. Not only that, the progression is entirely linear with the only backtracking required to go talk to NPC's for the 10th time in a row. So in terms of metroidvania exploration this one scores very low, it's also super confusing where the room exits are, with many paths being cut short by invisible walls. Normally i'd say that's where the map comes in handy but this game has one of the absolute worst mv maps i've seen. Rooms are shown by very vague rectangles that are approximately sized to their respective rooms with no other information other than save points and connections to other rooms. Ender lilies did this as well but atleast gave more markers and more importantly allowed you to zoom out. In this game your map is zoomed in to 200% with world's slowest scroll speed which makes scouring your map a real chore. It does mark completed rooms in a different colour atleast but it doesn't share this fact anywhere and the colour change is REALLY hard to see. Not that i recommend going for 100% as it's both incredibly cumbersome and truly really unrewarding. Exploring in this game barely gets you anything most of the time despite there being a multitude of things to find. Most notable of which are the dozens of spells the game prides itself on but the issue here is that they are completely useless. They have lenghty cooldowns and barely do any damage which makes your sword the better option 99% of the time. Yeah you do have to get into melee range which is more dangerous but enemies are so spongey that killing them with spells alone would double your gametime. I just didn't bother with any of the combat spells but there's a few cool utility spells that were genuinly unique. Things like conjuring platforming, revealing chests or creating a clone you can TP back to were cool but not enough to compensate for the basic combat. Combat felt clunky as well because you cannot swing your sword up/down when you're on the ground, while you can ONLY swing it up or down when you're in the air. This is a baffling design choice which made flying enemies a pain in the ass, speaking of which you will encounter two enemies like these throughout the whole game. I'm dead serious, the the bats you encounter in your first biome get used in every single other biome as well, no recolour or anything. In fact enemy variety is really weak in this game, with all of them also being very basic in terms of mechanics. The one enemy that is unique, a screaming ghost with an AoE stun, is unfortunately even more annoying. Bosses don't fare much better with poorly telegraphed attacks and massive health pools. Then there's the music which is somewhat decent, albeit forgettable but the sound design is incredibly weak. Everything lacks punch and worst of all it has a terrible echoing effect half of the time. I don't know if this was intentional or a bug but it was really jarring. Speaking of bugs the game had plenty of them, from getting stuck on/in platforms, to tons of pause menu bugs related to steam overlay and other miscellaneous bugs. There's also one that prevented me from exploring the final room with the final collectible that would've granted me 100% completion. However this seemed more like an oversight in game design than an accidental software bug. The game also crashed twice on me and froze up once for several seconds, but at least it didn't lag otherwise. Finally there's the story which had some good elements but ruined them all with a super lame plot twist at the end.
It was all a dream
There's some other stuff that also irked me, like just straight up odd writing and tonal shifts by some of the characters, like one of your allies randomly challenging you to a (very challenging) rythm dance battle. The story as a whole was very nonsensical and bloated with too many elements and plots, most of which don't get resolved properly. It was fully voiced, which is rare for an indie game, but it was in brazilian portuguese so it added nothing for me. Speaking of which, at one point during a 'major' choice the game wasn't even translated to english for me. All in all a very mediocre game that unfortunately left me feeling very dissapointed, do not recommend :(
Ksks
I can tell a lot of love was put into this game. Absolutely love the particular pixel style and the background aesthetics. Voice acting has been good, even if I can't understand Portuguese. The English subtitles are easily understandable, so that's helpful. I don't usually play Metroidvanias, but this may have me wanting to try more. It's a good entry game if you're new to the genre. I like collecting the spells, as I really enjoy collectables. They're not just given to you, so you have a sense of achievement when finding them along the map. I haven't run into any bugs or anything yet, and I'm a (dungeon) areas in. I think an English dub would be lovely if this game keeps being developed for people who aren't going to bother with subtitles.
I usually don't commit to reviewing a game until I complete it but this game has captured something truly magical. This has an indie game feeling very similar to another game I recommend of a different genre, Black Book. Both of these indie games are phenomenally voice acted but are balanced poorly -but not to their detriment. The inexperience of the design instead is met with inginunity. The power creep is massive and traps and bosses are punishing but the upgrades only escalate. I am early enough in the game to not have a dodge or dash, yet the game has invulnerability spells, the ability to make platforms. In any other game making these so accessible would feel like a mistake but the surreal fairytale vibe of the game, and how fluid the animation is just makes it feel fun. It is like a very polished appearance on questionable design, but as a design risk it succeeds with flying colors. Rather than feeling bad it feels whimsical. This kind of joy is elusive to capture and I eagerly anticipate more as this gem of an experience has shown me bottled lightning. Edit: After seeing most of the game/areas I have to credit this as an indie masterpiece. Was it the power ups and upgrades that feel like cheating but aren't? Was it the emotionally charged snake hunt? Was it melting a pile of crabs with magic spells? Was it the calming nuanced narrative with an empathetic side quest to get a dwarf to not be prejudiced? I'm not sure, but I stayed up all night hooked on it for more.
The controls feel clunky, the hit responsiveness is strange. And above all, I can't change the controlls in the game. --> refunded. That's a pity, because otherwise it looks quite nice. Maybe I'll buy it again after a few patches in a sale.
