Got this during the summer sale for 70% off, and I feel nostalgia hitting me like a heatwave in the summer. I love the new mechanics, but sometimes, the stages are just a tad too difficult from what I remember. For example, the boss of the 6th world(forgot the name) requires 2.9 MILLION points to get an S rank, best I get is 2.8 million, and that's playing it PERFECTLY, getting as many rings as I can. Though, what I could do instead is, go for the lights first, they're quick, and then just focus on the middle part of the boss. Still, 2.9 million points for an S rank? That's a bit much, isn't it?
No Copyright Law in the universe is going to stop me.
Faithful remaster and port of a sonic game I love, the music, the gameplay -- albeit with some clipping problems -- the wisps and the added one are all 10/10. And of course the achievement hunting and rival rush replayability is clever.
Project re-rainbow
If you are considering buying this game in the hopes that the re-rainbow mod fixes this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ remaster, then don't. Project re-rainbow crashes way too often on both my pc and steam deck. Both of which should be able to run this project just fine (steam deck less so). Crashing the game when trying to enter a level is bad enough, but my pc's save file just... straight up got corrupted at one point? I'm not even mad, especially because my steam deck's save files are fine somehow, but how did this even happen???????? Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for the modding community for trying to fix this game. When the mod works, the game looks so much better than it originally does. We're not even entitled to have modders that do such work, and I'm very grateful that I got to play this mod before the crashing became too much of an issue. The reason why I'm saying all of this, is due to the fact that a few say that project re-rainbow fixes this game, when it really doesn't. You can add as many wonderful ingredients as you want to a dish, but when the main ingredient is ♥♥♥♥, it will still taste like ♥♥♥♥. I played this game using the 0.9 version of colors re-rainbow and I'm not sure if better or complete versions exist. It's been a while since I installed this mod, but even back then people said that the mod would fix this game. I will acknowledge that I might be outdated though, and if you're really convinced on rerainbow, it might be worth looking into whether or not the mod has been updated since 0.9
The game itself
After playing this game, I have concluded that sonic colors is an okay game. I don't mind the fact that the game is slower paced, as I enjoyed the sonic game people make fun of for having a run button (Sonic lost world), but, if you want to make a slower paced game, don't add so much automation and quickstepping sections. Quickstepping is genuinely awful in this game, because boost is actually a finite resource for once. Boost being a limited resources isn't bad by itself, but it becomes bad when entering side stepping sections, due to it just not being fun to control sonic there without the boost. Also the sidestepping sections are just really boring too, especially compared to that of generations and unleashed. Wisps are a fun inclusion though. It sucks that you don't unlock all of them for each stage immediately though, because that just means that the level is really at its best once you beat the entire game, but said game is 2 hours long, so nobody cares! Wisps do also force you to slow down a lot of the times, but I wasn't ever bothered by that.
♥♥♥♥♥♥ remaster
I don't know what drugs they took when they decided to make the game THAT bright. Starlight carnival has consistently managed to blind me, even when I set my steam decks brightness all the way down. I've showed one of my friends that zone and they legitmately felt overstimulated. How do you ♥♥♥♥ up this badly? Sonic colors takes place in an amusement park in space. I would really love for the game's world to wow me, but it simply never did due to how bad it looks. The perfect homing attack sound effect is genuinely miserable. Why did they decide to make it such a high pitch sound? It's grating for the ears. If you want to access the options menu, you have to QUIT TO THE MAIN MENU, SKIP THE SEGA LOGO ANIMATION AND PRESS THE START BUTTON TO START THE GAME. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. And once you're there you will notice that there are no separate volume sliders for music and sound effects; They're one and the same. In the options menu, you will find a tab for customising your profile for some reason. Everytime you want to customise your character, you need to quit to the main title screen, skip the sega logo animation and press the start button to start the game. Do this enough times and who knows? Maybe you'll get a glitch that prevents the main menu music from playing. However, one thing you will notice immediately, is that the ui genuinely looks like it was made in powerpoint and don't get me started on the metal rival rush mode or whatever it's called. This game is about 22 gb big. To understand how stupid it is that a remaster of a wii game is this big, keep in mind that sonic racing crossworld, a 2025 game, requires less storage than this game. Also keep in mind that THE WISPS ARE PNGS. WHEN YOU GET A POWER UP AND THE WISPS ENTER SONIC OR SOMETHING, THEY'RE NOT 3D MODELS LIKE IN THE RE-RAINBOW MOD, THEY'RE A LOW QUALITY PICTURE, AND IT'S EXTREMELY NOTICABLE. If you beat a level for the first time and think "I wanna try again! I wanna get a higher rank!" and hit the try again button, the game forgets that you beat the stage. So if you decide to change your mind and quit out of the level you've already beaten, you will have to beat it again in order to progress through the story. There is probably more but it's these small things that just add up, and it really sours my experience with colors. Every nice QoL feels like it has a big asterisk. The perfect homing attack is a good inclusion, but the sound effect makes it really punishing to hit it at the right time, when it's supposed to be rewarding and the metal race is also cool, but the ui is so low quality that it becomes comical.
Conclusion
People rightfully complain about Nintendo making their mario galaxy remasters 40€, but sonic colors ultimate is only better because it goes on sale often. Otherwise? It is so SO much worse. Say what you will about those mario remasters, at least they didn't add brightness vomit to the entire game. At least the wii version isn't debatably the much better version of the game. At least the game couldn't cause seizures when it first launched. At least they didn't charge extra for a worthless digital deluxe edition. As a game company, I don't respect Nintendo either, but Sega can be just as low as them. Just a reminder that they are 100% at fault for the sonic 06 and sonic boom disaster, and that this game is proof that they would do it again if they thought it was the best decision business wise. This game is 10€ cheaper than sonic x shadow generations and it is insulting that the price points are this close. I cannot stress enough how much better of a deal generations is compared to this game. Even at 10€, there are probably other games you'd be better off buying.
Denuvo The Hedgehog (my oc don't steal)
While decent enough & you'll get what you're expecting from this game, it's still the same budget title from the Wii with not enough content to justify a 40 Dollar/euro price tag, especially for those that are only interested in a single playthrough. 30 is the highest it should be & even then I'd recomend waiting for a sale. There's so few cutscene's & most are padded out with selfaware bad comedy that's quick & easy to write. Someone skilled enough could blitz this game & get the 2 hour refund. Still it is a competent Sonic game mechanically. Glad the Wisps in expaned Sonic media.
Played and beat it for the first time, definitely one of the worst Sonic games i've played. It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful. I payed £10 for this piece of ♥♥♥♥. Somebody told me it wsa a good game, i'm having them executed for it. Don't waste your time
