meh couldnt finish, was so bored
Always Sometimes Monster was one of those games that captivated me when i was young adult, made me so excited i remmeber inviting my friend over so we can solve especially difficult situation. I liked how sometimes descisions you've made woul'd return to bite you in the bottocks. I never expected this game to have sequel and when i saw it in the store i was mindblown! Wow! One of my favorite games is having a sequel! Wow! I can transfer my safe file! I even replayed entirety of ASM to make sure i get best ending and put my new values into it. That was my mistake. I set expectations too high. I don't want to hurt artists who made sequel with harsh words. And i don't want to spoil this game for anyone who's willing to give it a try. So all i can say is that very little of what you do during SAM affects your story. To a devastating degree. I spent hours trying to get best outcome or weighting my choices. Only to don't recive any feedback from the story. The adventure itself feels just like collection of stories. Nothing to influence, nothing to change really. Just sit down and watch. Protagonist have a phone but rarely anyone calls them. Not to mention you can never call your BFF or manager, with the only guy you are able to call freely having one single repeatable dialogue. They implemented whole meachanic of complex cooking but your character only eats one meal in 2-4 days. And game quests only ask you to took 1-2 times. It's a waste. Ending was dissapointing and a bit messy. Interesting idea implemented a bit poorly. But it's unique. Overall this game left me dissapointed. Maybe because my expectation were so high, or maybe because this game doesn't live up to the level of modern story-based games. It's better to have fewer choices but see them bear fruit, then have 10000 and see no result. Sorry. Maybe this game would've been better if it was about completely new characters. Me transferig my safe file barely did anything to make this story more interesting. P.S. Also this game have vegan cat food propaganda. It's so enraging, i have no words. Sad to see young people buying into those lies.

Really well made. I even replayed the first one, because I didn't like my decisions from 2014. But the story this time really only gets exciting at the very end, sadly. I guess it's designed to be replayed multiple times, so I will have to do that. The characters felt very alive - the locations not so much this time. Overall it's not as exciting a story as the first one, but offers way more variety and decisions. I wish it kept more of that adult nature that it had back then. People called Always Sometimes Monsters (the first game) edgy at the time. So the ♥♥♥♥ what? They lost this edge in this one, sadly. Overall it kept me interested until its conclusion. Made me want more.
I think it's pretty clear to say if you liked ASM you're going to like this too. The pace is a little slower and less action packed but I think that is well chosen path. The game lets you explore the cities and the characters while also making you think and worry about the planning, schedule and the future in the back of your head. There are some continuity errors here and there but considering the amount of paths that can be chosen as well as the choices that is transferred from ASM to the new game I found it very easy to overlook. Something I really liked about this game is that it made me connect and actually like and care about my protagonist unlike most games. Even in choice and story driven games I find this trait very rarely. Also on another note, I actually cared more about the relationship during this game than I had during the previous. Personally I had my doubts about the sincerity and the durability of the relationship with the SO but the small dialogues, phone calls and dates actually made me feel like these two characters are together because they want to be rather than "they are together because that is the good ending path" Overall very enjoyable game, it's apparent that it was made with love and care and I wish it had gotten the spotlight and recognition ASM did.
Im a huge fan of ASM, so i was excited when the sequel came. I cant say the game is boring, because it does entertain you... But it was certainly not the same. Loved the dialogues between authors, but missed the MC's dialogues. Not being able to talk felt empty. There is no really any consequence to your choices, which I also missed. Whats the point of being healthy and doing good choices if there is no prize? Sam was barely... There, i expected something bigger and the ending felt anti climatic. Its not boring, but certainly is lacking. I still recommend it, tho.
This game isn't for me vs the predecessor which I love but I have to give it a thumbs up regardless. It is an incredible work of realism that draws the "talk to anyone and do anything" vision of Shenmue and meshes it with a sardonic view on modern America. It's GTA 5 would be if it wasn't a power fantasy. That doesn't make it automatically fun to play and there's a lot more complexity that comes with the freedom it gives vs ASM. I've bounced off it four times now. Buy this game and give it a go if you actually want to experience realism in games - the beautiful and the special, the mundane and the annoying. The sheer ambition is worth the price of entry.
a good continuation of the first game, the life sim aspects can get tedious but arent really fulfilling at the same time, but still a solid game
I suddenly got the urge the other day to replay ASM, and was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a sequel I didn't know about. After playing SAM, it doesn't stack up to the first game, but I still had a fun time. I personally would have preferred if the sequel had a different protagonist as I feel that the first game ended their story in a satisfying way. (The best ending to me that is, where you
end up with your love interest/pay off Sam's debt/become famous.
) Pros: -Awesome graphics, you can tell they spent a lot of time on details. I love the updated character looks. -Nice music just like the first game. -The love interest (when they weren't making random shady comments) I thought the scene where they
have dinner reservations and talk about their future possibly with children was cute.
Cons: -Going through the towns was grating sometimes. There would be not really anything to do, though I guess this depends on which authors you bring with you. You also miss out on doing things if the right character wasn't brought along. -I think another review mentioned this, but the choices in ASM definitely felt more substantial and that we were actively changing things in the places we traveled through. I'm excited to see what they come out with next, I don't believe (?) they're continuing this series based on a post I saw, but I hope they come out with another similar one where your choices matter.
Great game, lots of fun things to do.
