Interesting visual direction, feels hand animated while also being part caricature, I thought the world felt very immersive from start to finish, even if the narrative is a bit lacking on actual conflict. The game can be finished in 90 minutes, not an adventure game in a traditional sense, the character is controlled with arrows or WASD, mostly a walking-sim, just talking to characters and moving around, virtually no puzzles of any kind. I was playing the game with the headphones and really enjoyed the soundtrack, the game feels very moody with a touch of melancholy, regression, escapism, and a sense of mystery. Ultimately the narrative didn't deliver on the build up that was good otherwise, maybe you were going for something a little more subtle (it seems to be the case), but I felt there was not enough on the bone to really make something compelling in the end. I felt like the game needed a final act, or perhaps you could introduce more conflict that would deepen your involvement, maybe if you put the character in a more immediate danger. Even so, the dialogue was not bad, I thought you gave nice characterization to everyone in the game, even some random people on the street that also looked interesting, the world felt genuine, even though we only see a small part of it. I don't think it would hurt to maybe expand on optional dialogue, maybe another character in the tavern or at the party, a few more random people on a subway maybe.
Pros:
(+) really enjoyed the unusual aesthetic of the game, felt hand made with a touch of something like caricature, and the random details in the town also gave it nice character (+) slightly gloomy experience but I thought it was very moody despite lacking any serious conflict (+) the dialogue was interesting, even though the story probably could be a little more complex
Feedback:
Progression: - there is an oversight with the password, if you didn't record it, you can get locked in the building with the computer, and you will have to brute force it. In general something like a notepad to show your last objective would be nice - if there are story forks based on dialogue, maybe add achievements for each so people can track the possible outcomes - I just felt the story needed another day or two, felt a little like you implied conflict, but you never really truly in it Overall Thoughts: 7/10 For me the visual experience alone was worth it, I also thought the dialogue and the mood were enjoyable, but in the end the story didn't amount to anything compelling in my opinion, so I wish there was a little more to it. Felt like the game was going to go on for another day or so, so I was a little surprised to see it end so fast. On a side note, if you ever end up playing a game called XVTM, the main characters feel kinda similar, just random thought I had. Loved playing this game for a few different reasons! - The Art style is really unique and I love it, it not only feels like a game, but really a piece of art you are watching! - The sound design feels really good, great for the immersion - The story and city of Solis is extremely interesting! loved exploring the city! A game worth checking out!
The art style is stunning, but the gameplay is not. It is basically a text-heavy walking simulator. The third-person narration gets really annoying really fast. Billie sees this, Billie watches that, Billie, Billie, Billie. It is an interesting narrative choice to say politely. Also, you can't run or use the mouse to control, so backtracking is tedious. But the vibe with this art style is unique enough to recommend the game on sale
Follow us for more Awesome Adventures!
Intriguing game, gloomy atmosphere, unique beautiful artstyle. Playing it with al lot of GUSTO!
I was intrigued by the look of Solis and the developer's cool-sounding name Bram Boomgaardt! The game isn't very long and takes place over a single night, although the choices you make affect the ending. The story touches on some interesting themes of eternal life and the evolution of social media and technology, and there's a lot of potential for it to be expanded over several days to allow things to play out more. There's a bizarre cast of characters to talk to not all of whom are even human, like a Beer-Wine bottle and a guy with cylinders for eyes and a mouth...The strange atmosphere and hand drawn backgrounds are unique and compelling, and draw you into the dark world you're exploring. Would love to see the story and characters developed more, as the game ends just when it feels like it's really getting going...Definitely worth playing though, cheers Bram! PS Solis might not be the best game to play on a first date ;)
If you've played Flash games in the early 00s Solis will feel very nostalgic to you. The art and the music are such a vibe. The character design is also excellent - in just a few lines of dialog you get such a rich picture of almost any character you interact with. The sound design is modest but adds to the experience. The central theme in the story is quite interesting although somewhat mild in climax. The least developed aspects, the dialog and plot, are lacking at first glance. However it cannot be overstated: Solis is dripping in atmosphere. Your imagination will weave the story as you play, filling in the blanks with your own ideas about the characters' backstories and motivations. In many ways this was the most enjoyable part of the experience for me and would be a reason to return to the game in future. Overall, I enjoyed my time in Solis and will be looking forward to future work by the developer! Also, please make the OST available somewhere - it slaps!
Very enjoyable but rather short. It deals with some very relevant themes and overall raises some very valid points about where society is going, deception, having a conscience and the whole evil corrupt corporate world. Overall an enjoyable roughly 90m of done thought provoking themes.
Really creative atmosphere, interesting story, and clearly made with a lot of heart. Loved playing through it!
Just finished Solis and I'm here to say "I want more!". Absolutely love the hand-drawn art and music - definitely makes you feel immersed in the atmosphere of Solis. Honestly, I was pretty drawn by the story and would definitely play a part 2 to see what happens next. Hats of to the team! If there's one small thing I'd add it would be the ability to run (I know that's a whole other animation) but walking from one end to the screen could feel slow - or the ability to "skip" elevator scenes to get straight to the top/bottom. Either way, solid game with great art, music, and a compelling story. Recommend.
way too short for $7. most of the time is spent walking very slowly back and forth. maybe 3o min of actual content. The art style is beautiful but not worth the money. a little bit more content and it would be great.
