Solas and the White Winter A charming and atmospheric jaunt in the snow, solving puzzles to unlock temple doors. The story was lost on me however. Curator Info:
Follow our curator page: OCG-Curations if you like and want to see more reviews like this one.
Rating 6.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overview
Solas and the White Winter is a charming and atmospheric walking simulator/puzzle game where you find temples in the snow and then solve various puzzles to open doors and release the light within.
Game Breakdown
Most of your time will be spent walking around in the snow looking for temples. There are four temples to find and a final ultimate temple which you must conquer. Once you find the temples you will need to find a way in by lighting fires or solving puzzles. Once inside the temple there are more puzzles to solve. Once all puzzles are finished the light inside the temple is released. Once you release all four lights you are sent to a final temple where all the puzzles you played in the previous temples are brought back for the ultimate challenge. Gameplay: 🕹️ You will be doing a lot of walking in this game. There is no run mechanic but thankfully the character does walk at a brisk pace. There is also a stealth mechanic for walking on ice. The puzzles are very logical and to be honest not that difficult. There are three main types of puzzle. Blocks You will push a certain number of blocks around a grid. The idea is to put the blocks on a stone plate to depress the plates and open the doors. The challenge is to push the blocks in the correct order and use other blocks to guide the blocks in the correct direction. Sometimes you will need to use your own blocks to guide your other blocks. Pipes You will need to rotate pipes to guide the steam through the pipes to the other end. You rotate the pipes by stepping on plates on the floor. Certain plates control certain pipes. This isn’t too much of a challenge as the plates are marked out in order so it’s obvious which plate relates to what pipe. The annoying thing about this challenge is that the plates are quite close to each other so it is easy to accidentally step on the wrong plate. I also had difficulty with my character uncontrollably running to the right. This caused havoc on this puzzle and the block puzzle. I can’t say whether this is my controller or the game though. It doesn’t happen on other games. Torches You have to light certain torches in the correct order. There is usually some kind of symbol above the torch so you just need to find the order which is marked somewhere in the temple. mosaics You have to spin around layers of a circle by pulling levers in the ground. The idea is to match up the layers of the circle to show a symbol which opens the door. There are a few more complicated puzzles throughout the game which you will encounter also. Story: It’s difficult to say what the story is about. I found it a bit confusing. The story is told through a series of still pictures. The pictures are beautifully drawn and you get an idea of what is happening but after I completed the game I wasn’t sure what happened. After each temple is completed you are presented with four or five pictures that progress the story. Sound: 🎵 The music is beautiful and creates a very relaxing atmosphere. The sound effects are also very good in creating a feeling of isolation and coldness. Mostly you can hear the sound of swirling wind. Graphics: 📺 The graphics are basic but beautifully drawn and suit the ambience of the game. There are some effective snow and wind effects which really create an isolated and cold feeling. The temples are basic and the puzzles are basic too but somehow it all works and fits together nicely as a package.
Conclusion
I would recommend Solas and the White Winter if you like walking simulators and light puzzle elements. There’s nothing difficult about the game. The puzzles won’t tax your brain too much and at 2-3 hours in length it won’t take too long to complete. It was a relaxing and enjoyable 3 hours but at this price I would suggest waiting until it’s 50% off in the sale. Pros: 👍 Nicely drawn story boards Great atmosphere Cons: 👎 Story was a bit confusing. Controlling the character in tight areas proved to be troublesome. Puzzles a little bit easy and not varied enough.
I can see what they're going for but the scope is simple and small. The puzzles don't challenge enough to keep it interesting. The slow speed at which the character runs doesn't help either. Unfortunately the game creates a world which is barren and dead that makes running to different areas boring. It's a majority of the game too! Look the deal is that this game needs more work, polish, and play testing. However, I think Savepoint Studios has skill and I'll be interested in their next game release.
Brilliant indie game, lovely peaceful atmosphere thanks to the beautiful music and cute graphics. Very cool the way the game has no words for direction whatsoever, just clever indications of what to do like following the winter spirit, takes a little getting used to but very well done. The puzzles are really enjoyable. Keeps you wondering what will be next as you continue your journey. Would definitely recommend!!
A really great game with clever and challenging puzzles. Loved the mysterious and haunting storyline and the music that fits perfectly!
Solas and the White Winter 2/5: Jakkoli herní doba dosahuje sotva dvou hodin, tak jde o nejutahaněj... A ne, to si nedělám legraci. Jelikož prvních pár minut to má onu zamýšlenou melancholickou atmosféru (než to prokouknete), protože finální chrám obsahuje aspoň náznaky zábavy a protože díky délce to i přes tu ukrutnou nudu není zase až taková otrava dohrát. A že s náběhem závěrečných titulků zapomenete, že jste to vůbec kdy hráli? To už je věc jiná. ------------------------------------------------------------------ -: Případná další (ne)doporučení jsou k nalezení na mé kurátorské stránce :-
It feels more like a demo, like a small project, which is not bad per se, but for this price, I would expect something bigger. I can think of more complete experiences that are free, the first that comes to mind is All our Asias, from one of the creators of Anodyne. As a note, sometimes it takes a lot to load new places. Puzzles are easy but fun.
really short need more puzzles grab it on sale
Had such fun in this game, I put my feet up/ headphones on and just enjoyed the journey. Great game for just chilling out id really recommend if someones looking for a good time.
Very Nice and beautiful game, while playing through this game it did remind me so much of Zelda and the artwork used to tell the story telling was very suitable and most definately unique to my eyes. I found this game very calm and peaceful. Gameplay: The game had a beautiful start but after finishing the first section of the puzzles it just felt like rinse and repeat with slightly different puzzle layout. it felt like while thinking of the puzzles they put more time into difficulty of the puzzle rather than adding variation of different machanics. There seemed to be alot of times where i was walking through the snow and nothing happens for a long period of time. This being said, i was wowed by how beautiful the game looked but eventually it didnt even matter how nice it looked and i was more focused on what would happen next or to see an event refering to the plot of the story. The avalanches were very confusing, i didnt know where they were landing. Story: the story seemed to be non-existing throughout the gameplay, the game only seemed to show a bit of story is after you finish a puzzle section of the game. At the start of the game it shows a spirit guiding you to the first temple. after that the spirit doesnt show up at all throughout the gameplay. In my opinion, there seemed to be a hugely missed opportunity in using spirits to storytell throughout the gameplay e.g. while walking through the snow you can see spirits of the people or wild-life that used to live there and see what it was like before the winter. It would have kept the atmosphere alive for me.
