The ultimate SokPop collectathon, celebrating 100 games from the collective by befriending a character from each game, including the developers. It's very heavy on the "inside jokes", it helps if you played their previous games, about 70/100 in my case - people think AAA games are expensive, try being a SokPop fan for several years, it adds up fast XD. I don't subscribe to their service, I mostly buy them individually, and I don't mind, they can justify that $5 range just on the charm value alone, and in general, I think the quality of the average release went up a little in the last year. You can 100% the game in about 2 hours with no help, although it has an online component so you can see other players running around, you can chat and ask for help if you get stuck. As far as I can tell there is no player-to-player interactions, except maybe stealing certain quest items that will respawn after a short delay. It seems like the game will give you one of the few preset models for the character, I do wish you could fully customize it instead like a smurfy, which would make it a bit more immersive. It's probably the best version of this game that they made, there are many SokPop games where you collect objects, but they are not as self-aware or endearing, it feels like all of the SokPop nostalgia was leading to this one game. just oozing charm and being extremely playful with the dialogue. The puzzles are not complicated but very creative at the same time, you can change into different characters that may interact with the world and specific individuals, I won't spoil it, but overall I think the game managed to be very thought-provoking in terms of figuring out how to progress.
Pros:
(+) This game is very charming, especially if you have been following them for many years, admittedly it feels like a giant reference, but it's very self-aware, very playful, and very interactive - I love how the devs make fun of their game dev process. You finally get to meet all of the forgotten characters in one place, and sometimes with a hilarious portrayal, some of the inside jokes in this game are pure gold. (+) I thought the puzzles were very creative for the most part, while also not being too difficult. I like how the dialogue is often designed to give you subtle hints, you kind of have to pay attention and think outside of the box. You can also morph into different characters/objects to access various areas. (+) The game is roughly 90 minutes to 2.5 hours, which for a SokPoP release is arguable twice the normal length, as long as we not talking about those SIM games, so it feels like they put a bit more work into it. It has a fun collection feel, and it's not too hard to 100% it.
Feedback:
Nitpicks - you can escape this game in a few places, if you turn into the ant in the sewers for example, also I don't think that Dino quest registered as completed. I do wish you could customize your first character, feels like a missed opportunity. Would have been nice to have some player-to-player interactions, maybe some mini-game tables like pong or something. Overall Thoughts: 8/10 While a nice collection game to play blindly with no SokPop experience, it's very much a game for the fans and probably the devs as well, I think we all had a good laugh here having all of the niche characters celebrating the SokPop legacy. I thought the game was self-aware in a very playful way, just the overall experience was extremely charming, so based on that alone I just had a very good time. At it's basic level, this is a point and click game about sneaking into a festival. Depending on where you are coming from before starting on this game, it is so much more. As a note, it is a MP game in the sense you see other people and can chat. You do not need to though. The puzzles are fair and pretty straight forward, a few took a a bit of thinking, but usually figured it out fairly quickly. I did start a mini guide here on questions I saw frequently in chat. The game is filled with music in all of the areas, a lot of the characters make jokes about the music being played. I particularly enjoyed inside of the apple sequence. There is a story though it is somewhat loosely told in between attending the festival. You are looking for Reuben. Where could he be? In this case, it is believable to be caught up in a million things on your way to solving the main quest. How many games do we play where we must save the world NOW but spend 3 hours picking mushrooms on the side of the road? You do not need knowledge of any Sokpop games to enjoy this game. But if you do know them, you will have a different sort of enjoyment. As a long time player, I loved finding all the Easter Eggs. All the characters were true to themselves, even if in their original game you only met them for a few moments or heard nothing of substance from them. The countless thank yous felt uplifting and the small interactions of some of the characters were particularly heartwarming and had me feeling nostalgic. There is a charm in playing a game for the first time, and in a sense I got to experience many of these games fresh once more. It was great to see the team, their friends, and other familiar faces over the years. It must feel like a major accomplishment to get this off their plate and look to the many more games in their future. This is a game I'd recommend even if it wasn't a landmark for them, but the fact that is, makes it even better.
Congrats to SokPop on this incredible achievement! Videogames are an art and these fools are going down in history as some of the greats.
Sokfest is a really nice little Sokpop All-Star Party. It's essentially a point&click adventure and a brilliant idea to celebrate 100 games with lots of meta stuff around the Sokpop team and library. Takes around 2 hours to complete. I enjoyed it very much!
sadly for sokpop completists only
i love this game! it was really fun questing and talking to other random players. it never got old getting excited every time i see a character i recognize from a previous games
A really cute and short game about attending a festival and meeting all the other SokPop characters! I would recommend this to the die hard Sokpop fans. There's also a neat little online chat section so you can chat to other players. P.S Broeder you rock!
Sokfest is so nice after playing these SokPop games for so long, it really does feel like you're among friends (or enemies) and it's a great way to celebrate 100 games! The point and click style here is a good format for the experience. The text-to-sound like Animal Crossing is a nice touch. Being able to watch all the trailers for each game in the game is nice so you can easily check out where a character is from if you don't recognize it. The several music showcases around each zone really make me want to stick around each area and enjoy it. The directional audio is really cool too. The music in the club goes unexpectedly hard. Finding the "secret music zone" with the Tile Tale OST playing and being greeted with "we only play real music here" was such a perfect surprise since I play the Tile Tale OST on loop while working and love it so that was good timing.
This is a sweet point-and-click collectathon where you are collecting...friends! Doing various tasks to befriend Sokpop characters was super fun. Congrats on (now over) 100 games, Sokpop!
