I bought this game on sale since I was leery of buying it at full price given the reviews, and after playing for a bit I honestly see why they're mixed. The game has a lot of neat mechanics it does well, like swapping dimensions, buffs you can buy from the doctor to make fighting easier, and a priest to get rid of the ghosts. The art style of the game is also really charming and unique. Seriously, there's little musical numbers between the stages. It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ adorable! Story is bare bones, but it's interesting enough it kept some of my attention. The gameplay itself isn't very hard, so it's a good game to pick up to play and chill out with. Until the boss. The final boss has beat me twice, and I honestly don't care to play the game for another 2-3 hours for another chance. I tried to see if I could potentially save scum to avoid having to replay the entire game just for another chance to beat them, but no dice, as devs thought of that and it saves mid fight so you pick back up where you left off. Which, I can honestly see where that would be a pro, but here it just blocks you from the ending if the boss is "unbeatable". Those are very heavy quotes, since I don't know if I'm just having that unlucky a time with the second phase, or if it's glitched, as the pipes didn't light up at all in my last attempt. A smaller nitpick is the game feels far more natural to play on a mouse and keyboard than it does with a controller. It has controller support, don't get me wrong, but it felt far clunkier to play with one that it did with the keyboard. On the controller you use the right analog stick to rotate objects rather than continue to use the left, where on keyboard wasd lets you move and rotate objects. The aiming and shooting with right and left trigger also felt a bit wonky as well. There's also a small bug for the idle animation on the start menu. When you're idle for too long the camera starts panning around the small mansion to give an overview of it. Really neat in concept, except you can't get out of it. I have hit every button on my keyboard to get out of it, but the only way out for me is to quit and restart the game. The game IS really fun and I've enjoyed playing it, but I just can't recommend buying it at full price. It's mainly because the final boss has beat me twice and I just do not care to play the allotted amount of time necessary to try again. Even if you cut out the side quests, you still looking at 2 hours of gameplay with roughly 30 min per level to get through them. Again, I don't know if I was just unlucky, or it's bugged, but if the second phase is working as intended, then it just makes the game seem like it doesn't respect your time. I seriously cannot overstate how much this wrecked the otherwise great impression this game made. It's not that I hate the game, more that it made me indifferent to trying again.
Rather wanted to like it due to the aesthetic, but the gameplay is tiresome at best. It's clunky, repetitive and at some point you die to a random trap and have to restart the game. Just couldn't find enough here to redeem it.
Let me start by saying the game is very fun... until the first death. The fantastic visuals, great music, and engaging gameplay come together for what could have been a fantastic horror/ puzzle game. The problem is the needless time-padding by adding the rogue-lite elements, such as randomized levels and arbitrary difficulty spikes. With a little more time spent on the story and meaningful level design and less on hitting the "play it until you hate it" trend, this could have been a game people cherished for decades. Addendum: So, I played quite a bit more to get all the equipment and see if maybe I had been too quick to judge. I am now firmly confident in my review, due to, if nothing else, the amount of bugs found in my playthroughs. Bugs are bad in any game experience; But for rogue-likes, they are a death sentence. If the idea is to craft an "unforgiving horror experience," the "unforgiving" part should definitely not be coming from shoddy code.
The art is absolutely amazing, the music is great, the lyrics are hilariously bad, and the boss on the last floor feels unbeatable. Like I hit a complete wall during it's second phase because nothing i did seemed effective. Looking at how to beat it, one of the things i tried, just did not work like it was suppose to? Either way it brought me to a halt, and i just didn't want to continue. I see people complaining at the controls, but I think it's on purpose. See the controls are clunky, but in that retro horror type of way. I'm not great a that type of thing, but with everything else, i found it fine to get around. the puzzles got a bit repetitive though so my interest waned there. as a rouguelite it just got to repetitive, without enough reveals to keep me going. I don't regret buying it, but I also bought it on sale, so my take was that I got to appreciate a wonderful, unique art style for a few bucks. It's when it started feeling like a waste of my time that I stopped being able to recommend it. Which is a shame, because i was interested in the story, but it came to me too slowly to keep a hold of me.
Ignore the haters - this is one of the most refreshingly distinct survival horror titles in years! Beautiful aesthetic, great storytelling. Absolutely worth your time!
Currently impossible to even complete normal mode. "Final" boss can't be defeated. Health gates with a puzzle mechanic that is impossible to trigger, the boss's attack won't ignite the nessesary objects.
It kind of had something going on, but game play feels terrible and hasn't received any improvements or updates of any kind for years.
What an exhausting experience. The options menu doesn't work, the controls are sloppy, hard pass on this one.
Прошел эту игру три раза на всех сложностях, выяснилось, что тут 27 концовок, а столько я явно не осилю. Первые разы было интересно, но, дальше уже будет не интересно. Позалипать вечерок норм, но не более.
