Not bad at all. Love the detective/rpg/dating sim element to it!
Snares of Ruin is a story-focused RPG developed by Astronomic Games and published by New Reality Games that blends detective investigation, supernatural horror, romance elements, and urban fantasy into a surprisingly ambitious indie experience. Built with a strong emphasis on narrative and player choice, the game places players in the role of detective Hank Anderson, a man transferred to a troubled city plagued by brutal murders and the spread of a mysterious infection turning ordinary people into violent creatures. What initially feels like a grounded crime investigation slowly unfolds into something far more sinister involving hidden conspiracies, supernatural beings, and forces operating beneath the surface of the city. The game immediately establishes a dark and uneasy atmosphere through its writing and worldbuilding. Rather than rushing players into nonstop action, Snares of Ruin focuses on slowly developing tension through dialogue, investigation, and exploration. The city itself feels dangerous and unpredictable, with every new clue revealing deeper layers of corruption and mystery. As Hank investigates the strange outbreak and the growing number of murders, the narrative gradually introduces supernatural themes involving vampires, elves, and hidden organizations tied to the chaos spreading throughout the city. The combination of detective fiction and paranormal fantasy creates a setting that feels unique compared to many traditional RPGMaker titles. One of the strongest elements of the game is its branching narrative structure. Player choices influence relationships, investigations, and story outcomes in meaningful ways. Dialogue selections often affect how characters perceive Hank and can unlock entirely different scenes or interactions later in the game. This emphasis on consequence helps make the player feel actively involved in shaping the story instead of simply following a fixed path. The multiple endings and alternate routes also add replay value, encouraging players to experiment with different decisions and character relationships across multiple playthroughs. The character writing is another major highlight. Throughout the story, Hank encounters a variety of companions and potential romantic interests, each with distinct personalities and personal motivations. The game allows players to build either romantic or friendly relationships depending on how interactions are handled. These relationship systems are more than simple side content because many of the characters become deeply connected to the larger mystery and emotional stakes of the narrative. Conversations and optional events help develop the cast gradually, making many interactions feel personal rather than purely functional. Gameplay primarily revolves around exploration, investigation, and dialogue-driven progression. Players search environments for clues, interact with characters, and make decisions that shape future events. The game also includes light role-playing mechanics that allow players to improve specific skills such as charisma, intellect, and physical ability. These stats influence available dialogue options and alternate solutions to certain situations, giving players flexibility in how they approach the story. Although the mechanics remain relatively simple compared to larger RPGs, they support the role-playing elements effectively and help create a stronger sense of player agency. The pacing is slower and more deliberate than many modern RPGs, but that approach works well for the type of story the game wants to tell. Rather than relying on constant combat or spectacle, the game builds suspense through gradual revelations and emotional tension. The mystery unfolds piece by piece, keeping players curious about the true nature of the infection and the hidden forces manipulating events behind the scenes. Certain moments involving the infected creatures and supernatural entities are genuinely unsettling despite the game’s modest presentation. Visually, Snares of Ruin uses a classic top-down RPGMaker style that feels nostalgic for fans of older indie role-playing games. The environments are simple but atmospheric, especially during darker scenes involving crime investigations or supernatural encounters. Character portraits and dialogue artwork help add personality to important interactions, giving the cast stronger emotional presence during conversations. While the visuals lack technical sophistication, the consistent art direction supports the game’s mood effectively. The soundtrack also plays an important role in maintaining immersion. Music shifts naturally between suspenseful investigation themes, emotional relationship scenes, and darker horror moments. The audio design is subtle rather than dramatic, but it succeeds in reinforcing the atmosphere and pacing of the story. Quiet ambient tracks during exploration help create tension, while more emotional scenes are supported by softer compositions that strengthen the narrative impact. The game is not without flaws. Players looking for action-heavy gameplay may find the experience too focused on dialogue and storytelling. Combat and mechanical depth are not the primary focus, and certain sections rely heavily on reading and conversation. Some pacing issues also appear during longer exposition scenes where progression slows noticeably. In addition, while the branching narrative is ambitious, not every storyline feels equally detailed or satisfying. Technical limitations of the RPGMaker engine are also visible in movement, animations, and environmental interaction. Even with these shortcomings, Snares of Ruin succeeds because of its strong storytelling and commitment to player-driven narrative design. The game creates an engaging mystery filled with supernatural intrigue, moral choices, and emotionally driven character interactions. Its combination of detective work, relationship systems, and dark fantasy themes gives it a distinctive identity that helps it stand apart from more generic indie RPGs. For players who enjoy narrative-heavy adventures, branching dialogue systems, and urban fantasy mysteries, Snares of Ruin offers an immersive and rewarding experience. The game may not appeal to those seeking fast-paced combat or high-budget production values, but its strong atmosphere and character-focused storytelling make it easy to become invested in the world and its mysteries. Beneath its modest presentation lies an ambitious RPG that values narrative depth and meaningful choice above spectacle. Rating: 8/10

This is a cautious recommendation. The different stories and characters felt a bit shallow, it might have been better to focus on less and flesh that out more. Still an entertaining game, especially when baught during a sale
