Snares Of Ruin is a independent story-rich R.P.G. developed by Astronomic Games and published by New Reality Games. As ace detective Hank Anderson, you find yourself along with a new partner Gwen transferred to the city of Cromford in order to solve a particularly mysterious series of crimes that have the local authorities baffled. Being an experienced gumshoe, you'll have the opportunity to investigate crime scenes, follow up leads and examine evidence as you try to determine the answers to this perplexing thriller while also finding the time to expand your social life.
GAMEPLAY
In my opinion, the bread and butter of Astronomic Games titles are the engrossing stories which always go hand in hand with the terrific gameplay elements. I just really find the gameplay in all of this developers titles alot of fun and this offering is no exception. Firstly, this title does a wonderful job of putting you in the shoes of a detective. You'll have a chance to visit a number of locations throughout the city and speak to an abundance of different people while you search for clues and try to solve the mystery at hand. Being a R.P.G., Hank gains experience as tasks are completed and when enough XP is acquired you receive a skill point that you can then apply to a limited skill tree consisting of Athletics, Charisma and Erudition. Athletics adds interactions with the environment as well as physical feats usually involving strength, Charisma adds dialogue options and chances to persuade people as well as earn their trust and finally there's Erudition which brings additional dialogue options and technical knowledge that deals with science and computers. With these gameplay aspects you can easily tailor the character of Hank Anderson to your preferation be that a fighter, a negotiator, a computer geek or an amalgam of the attributes. Exploration is encouraged as you can locate some extra skill points and currency hidden in different areas throughout the city just by going off the beaten path and looking for them. I'm happy to report that there is some lite character customization as you can choose from a small list of options for the preferred look of your version of detective Hank Anderson which is a nice addition. Also, while I wandered about the city I really liked talking to various N.P.C.'s as some of them have funny or rude things to say to you. Others talk about current events going on in the city or just have idle chit-chat that you can listen in on at your leisure. Yet another terrific quality of this title is the non-linear way that you can complete the investigations. Most of them can be accomplished in different ways depending on the choices that you make as well as the skills that you employ. All these aspects combine for a truly enjoyable gameplay experience alongside the absolutely wonderful narrative.
VISUALS
This of course is a RPGMaker title so it has the look and sound that people who have played these types of games before will expect from the software. I however like the fact that many of Astronomic Games RPGMaker titles don't follow the typical "chibi" style when it comes to the characters and objects in the game. They tend to opt for a more realistic look which I prefer immensely. With that said, Snares Of Ruin has a number of detailed environments that you will visit throughout the metropolis from the City Center to the Slums, the Docks and beyond as you conduct your investigations. Also, the art on the character portraits during dialogue is beautifully illustrated. In my overall opinion, as a RPGMaker title this game manages to provide a terrific visual presentation definitely one of the best in the RPGMaker genre.
SOUND
I liked the aural quality in this game from cell phones ringing, knocks on a door to the sounds of combat, etc. It all sounds wonderful but I really enjoyed the soundtrack as it had some catchy tunes, however, it's a shame that the music isn't available as D.L.C. or in the game files for listening at my pleasure. Nevertheless, I don't think anyone will be disappointed with the aural presentation of Snares Of Ruin.
CONCLUSION
I truly loved the adventure that this game takes you on from the investigations involved in Hank's work to the pursuit of romance in his personal life as well. This title does a great job of balancing both and keeping them interesting while also tying them into the compelling storyline. Replayability is high as there are quite a few achievements to get and some cannot be attained through merely a single playthrough. Your choices also affect current events and the stories ending so you may want to make alternate decisions next time to see how differently things end? On a sidenote, I have to mention the technical issues that I had with this game. I've played quite a few titles from Astronomic Games and haven't had issues with any of them whatsoever but this game had some glitches, random crashes and freezing which occurred to me on a regular basis not to mention the occasional lagging which is weird because this is a RPGMaker title and they aren't particularly taxing on your hardware? Nevertheless, I had so many technical issues but hopefully no one else will. As far as options go, there are a number of Steam Achievements to hunt down but sadly no Steam Trading Cards to collect. In summary, with a thought provoking narrative, wonderful R.P.G. elements and very fun gameplay Snares Of Ruin is a title that any fan of the roleplaying game genre or anyone looking for a nice engaging story will enjoy so it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Thanks!
Snares of Ruin is a crime mystery RPG game with a really thrilling story and a lot of various smart and unorthodox usage of RPGMaker. Detective Hank Anderson is being transferred out, and very soon into your journey you notice something isn’t right where you’re headed. The mystery will slowly unravel as you figure crimes out, talk to various others in town, and meet some friends that will help you get closer to the truth along the way. You basically can gain core skills at certain points, and then there will be a check to see if you pass or not based on the number you’ve earned in said skills. There aren’t the standard encounters you see in a lot of these, and there are multiple ways to solve certain parts and multiple scenarios that can take place depending on your actions and choices through communication. It’s kinda linear in a way as far as your day to day investigating goes, but you have a bit of freedom to travel around between times, and there are many choices and communication responses that will end up influencing the overall outcome, making replayability on this one quite enjoyable! The nature of it being not super long, plus the fact that each storyline I went through had some interesting twists and turns really made me want to complete each ending. I enjoyed playing it every time I did so. Having a few saves on hand can’t hurt if you’d like to skip certain elements or parts, but it might be hard to figure every single ending out without a little guidance elsewhere.
Pros
The story is very well written, and it pulls you in. It’s one of those games I wanted to get all the achievements for - has those as well. I can’t stress enough how much the nicely written dialog makes one want to keep playing this game. It’s done well and right! I like the style of the graphics, the characters, and the presentation as you speak and so forth. The whole setting all fits together well for the most part. The areas are not too huge, but there is a lot packed into what is available as the story unravels. The characters all have certain types of personalities, and it can help give you a light idea on which responses might be more appropriate to get the desired outcome. The replayability is great in this game. I really had fun going back over it a few times and seeing what different things might influence and change towards the resolution. The system of being kinda guided along so you know what you need to do is integrated well in this. Sometimes it’s automatic, and other times you can check it out if you forget/get lost, like I sometimes do in games. Relationships developing or crumbling a bit is kind of interesting. Watching the emotional tug-of-war was kind of fascinating as I went along - a few intrigiguing spots in the game where decisions can really impact overall conclusions of said parameters. Some good atypical achievements thrown in the mix, and enough variation and endings to make it where playing it over a few times can be a fun thing to do! The maps! I love maps, so I’m glad this one has a clear and concise map to follow if I so desire!
Cons
Some might feel it to be a bit redundant at times, but the length will not have you stuck in the doldrums too long if you’re one of those that might feel it’s a bit too straight-forward in how it is set up. I think anyone reading would have a tough time stopping altogether, however, in spit of this. I kind of wish there were a little bit more content to access, like checking out a few random houses, having a few mini-games or something to that effect would bring out a nice touch in my opinion. The characters are so shaped into personality sets, that sometimes they are a bit too easy to read into, and so that can make a choice easier than I’d have liked it to be in a few cases. Your gait is a little bit awkward looking as you’re going from spot to spot if you’re running. Kinda like your jelly or maybe gliding along… something like that. Hard to explain properly. For some reason this bugs my eyes somewhat, but it’s not a huge factor on gameplay itself. The story alone is immersive enough for me to favor it over all the small cons I pick out. If you want action in the form of typical RPG numbers, you won’t find it on this game. It’s all based on skills and choices, and this fuels the story progression rather than taking a lot of actions in battles. There are not typical battles at all, but choices to make that will impact battles. Some are limited by your skills, and others will just be based on A, B, C kinda format.
Conclusion
The overall compelling nature of the story along with the other nice touches along the path make this game a real hidden gem, in my opinion. I hope more people will come to realize how enjoyable this one is. Kinda reminds me of a movie, as it has some good story and suspense involved. I highly recommend it!
Snares of Ruin is a mystery/detectiv story driven game, which uses the rpg-maker software in a quite interesting and unique way. It's also one of my favourite games (and currently has a heavy discount) so maybe it's a good chance to check it out. - There are no random battles or level ups. You solve your fights using either of three skills that you're able to increase during the course of the game, which leads to different results and possible endings. So it has quite the replay value. - The story is really well written and even contains three different romance options (and two very minor ones, while you don't have to romance anyone at all if you don't want to). While these romances turned out great imo, the focus lies more on the mystery, and it kept me interested until the very end. - No pre-used character pictures and sprites! Well, if you like rpg-maker games, detective & mystery games or story driven ones, you can't do anything wrong with this one. It also has a very nice main theme. There is also a prequel of Snares of Ruin, which can be played before, but it's recommended to play the original Snares of Ruin first, because of some possible spoilers. Snares of Ruin 2 is in the works and looks really promising so far!
Отличная смесь детектива и игры для знакомств с интересным сюжетом и множеством вариантов романтики. В отличие от других игр на этом движке, выглядит и ощущается по-другому, за что отдельный плюс.
This hurts a little, but I can't really recommend this game based on my own tastes. The writing is well done, and the character portraits are nice looking, but that's really all Snares of Ruin has going for it. The entire game is reading, then walking, then more reading, which isn't inherently bad, but with nothing to break up this pattern, it gets old fast. I would gladly recommend this game if it was a visual novel or text adventure, where the traveling was less tedious, or if it had puzzles or combat. If you don't care about those things, then go ahead and give it a shot though.
A very good game I highly recommend. The story and characters are well written and believable. The puzzles aren't too hard so you're not stuck and can let the flow of events carry you. No down-time, all fun! It feels more like playing an interactive movie, with a lot of choices and alternate paths, depending on which skill you'll use. If you prefer a good story over an action-packed game, it's totally worth your time and money!
