... Another game I bought to kill time, but it turned out to be surprisingly addictive. It drops to dirt cheap prices during sales.

Sky Battles, developed by Peter Lacalamita and published by Volens Nolens Games, is an arcade-style aerial combat game that focuses on quick engagements, oversized enemies, and straightforward progression. It’s built around the idea of delivering immediate action with minimal complexity, placing players in the cockpit of a customizable aircraft and sending them into a series of encounters that prioritize movement, timing, and sustained firepower over deeper simulation or tactical nuance. The structure is simple and easy to grasp. Players progress through a sequence of missions, most of which revolve around taking down large, distinct enemies that act as the main attraction. These boss encounters form the backbone of the experience, each presenting a different pattern of attacks that players must learn to evade while maintaining offensive pressure. The scale of these encounters gives the game a sense of spectacle, even within its modest presentation, and they provide the most engaging moments the game has to offer. Controls are designed with accessibility in mind. Movement is responsive enough to allow for quick adjustments during combat, and the overall control scheme is easy to pick up without requiring extensive practice. This makes the game approachable for players who may not be familiar with flight-based gameplay. However, the simplicity of the controls also limits the depth of the experience. Combat largely revolves around dodging incoming attacks and continuously firing, with little variation in how encounters are approached. Progression is handled through a basic upgrade system that allows players to improve their aircraft over time. Completing missions rewards resources that can be used to enhance weapons, durability, and other attributes. While this adds a sense of advancement, the upgrades tend to feel incremental rather than transformative. There are few moments where new abilities or mechanics significantly change how the game is played, which can make progression feel more like gradual improvement than meaningful evolution. The game also includes a multiplayer component, offering aerial dogfights against other players. This mode has the potential to add variety and extend the game’s lifespan, but its effectiveness depends heavily on player activity. Without a consistent player base, it can feel underdeveloped compared to the single-player content, limiting its overall impact. Visually, Sky Battles adopts a bright and stylized approach. Environments are colorful and easy to read, which is important for tracking movement and projectiles during fast-paced encounters. Enemy designs, particularly the bosses, stand out as some of the more memorable aspects of the game. However, the overall presentation lacks refinement, with simple textures and limited detail giving it a somewhat rough appearance. The aesthetic is functional, but it doesn’t leave a strong impression. Audio design is similarly understated. Sound effects provide clear feedback during combat, but they are not particularly varied or distinctive. The soundtrack supports the action without drawing attention to itself, which helps maintain focus on gameplay but does little to enhance the overall atmosphere. Over time, the game’s limitations become more apparent. While the core loop is initially engaging, the lack of variety in mechanics and mission design leads to repetition. Encounters begin to feel similar, and the progression system does not introduce enough new elements to keep the experience fresh. This can make longer play sessions feel less rewarding, as the game struggles to build on its initial ideas. Despite these shortcomings, Sky Battles succeeds in delivering a straightforward and accessible arcade experience. It offers moments of excitement, particularly during its larger encounters, and its simplicity makes it easy to jump into for short sessions. However, its limited depth and repetitive structure prevent it from standing out in a meaningful way. Ultimately, Sky Battles is a competent but modest title that fulfills its core premise without expanding beyond it. It provides a functional and occasionally enjoyable experience, but it lacks the variety and refinement needed to sustain long-term engagement. It feels like a solid concept that could have benefited from additional development and complexity. Rating: 6/10
