TLDR: Game-breaking bugs and poor design scuttle what little chances this pirate-themed, rogue lite RPG-tactics game has in gaining early adopters or fans. Not recommended unless these issues are addressed. Sink Again is one of those games that has all the elements needed to make a game fun, but fails in its current state. Like most pirate-type games, movement and combat at sea is real-time, while dungeon crawling features turn-based combat. I really wanted to like the game, given it has the right elements to make it fun, but I was smacked in the face with bugs, bad spelling, and a game design that doesn’t seem well thought out. E.g.s • After exiting the game, attempting to reload it resulted in an invisible ship at port. Right after I had painstakingly upgraded it to a frigate… • If you have a save game and run the tutorial again (intentionally or otherwise), it will delete your save game. When does a tutorial ever delete anything?? The above bugs and atrocious spelling were enough to put me off the game despite being in EA, but when you combine that with the poor game design, the verdict is clear. Imagine: as a dev, you WANT gamers to play your game (in EA or after release), yet you punish them by deleting their game progress with every update. Their suggestion: “Hey, just turn auto-update off, and keep playing after you buy my game!!” Ehm… NO. Unless these issues are addressed, I will not be revising this review or revisiting the game. + Potentially fun game with engaging elements (pet store, cultist weapons, traits, healing, treasure maps, different pirate class types) + Turn-based combat is adequate, with basic LoS, traps and loot - Inept save game system; only a single save game slot that gets overwritten with each update. This needs to be overhauled. Starting a new campaign with different crew builds could have given the game better replayability - No persistent XP or characters; you cannot transfer your crew from one mission to another - Non-existent campaign -- instead there are a dozen or so quests that unlock ships, equipment, characters, etc. that are pointless since there’s no persistent XP and the characters and ship you’ve built get discarded after each mission is completed - Non-existent storyline - Enemies (pirate hunters) are overpowering -- with your basic ship and tiny crew, running into them during each mission often means restarting the game often - The above means you often have to start with the “no pirate hunters” option to stand a reasonable chance to completing the mission - Maps are small (presumably since all you can do are single missions); there’s not much to explore - Sandbox option seems like an afterthought. The game should take its cues from its space-themed kin like Privateer, X, etc. where the main campaign is continuous with endless missions and primary quests that follow a developing storyline - The dev’s suggestion that gamers turn off auto-updates so that your save games aren't overwritten is ridiculous. What happens when you DO need to run an update? What a shame. 4.0/10.0

Do all trade routines -> buy crew; do all easy dungeons -> buy weapons and perk rerolls; do all normal dungeons -> buy a better ship and upgrade her; do some pirating -> max upgrade crew. Then start doing boarding and hard dungeons. One tank and three healers to win. You have to repeat these same steps on every run, and it is getting tedious. This game is a great one-man effort, but it doesn't worth the price at this moment. What needs to be fixed: - looks like you lose money if you open chest/dig when you don't have enough space in inventory; - stun doesn't work on enemies during boarding; - dungeon movement must be unrestricted when out of combat, at this moment, it is boring; - it must be the way to retreat from dungeon battle;
The negative comments on this title remind me of a story about my cousin. "Jimmy! Go outside and play!" "Yes, Grandma." Jimmy went outside to play. He came back inside 10 minutes later and said, "Play what Grandma?" Comments about this game being repetitive and with a limited gear and rule set? Hide and Seek is repetitive with a limited gear and rule set. You get to be a PIRATE CREW!! "Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates." - Mark Twain, Life on the Mississippi Mark Twain would have loved this game. He's not the kind of person who goes outside for 10 minutes and asks, "Play what, Grandma?" I enjoy the game thoroughly. I have played the tutorial. I have played some sandbox. I have played two missions and so far have unlocked a war ship and two character types. I am going to unlock the whole bloody mess of this game and then start one hell of an endless game on Sandbox Mode because I am alive, I am good, and God and Flatcoon are allowing me to be a pirate via Sink Again.
A pinch of Sid Meiers Pirates feel for a one of a kind game. Real-time ship battles and dungeon exploration with turn-based combat. We will have to hire our captain and crew, arm them well and go around solving difficult quests, plus we will be able to trade and upgrade or buy more powerful ships, all with a humorous style. Currently in early access, but already incredibly solid and fun. Watch my first-look video https://youtu.be/KX2eY09wXP8
Feeling afraid because it's in Early Access? Don't. It's fully playable. As in "it's already a complete game, all they're going to add it's content: more missions, more items". And since the maps are randomly generated, it has loads of replayability. Also: pirate game, turned based dungeon crawling, real time naval battles, crew management? I'm in! 😋
Treated myself and my love of Pirates to this game today, so far I have played the tutorial and I like it alot ! Finally a new pirate game with land based exploration as well as sea battles. The tutorial is well done and fun to play out. The art is really nice , reminds me somewhat of the characters from Pirates of the Black cove. Sailing and ship battles are real time , land/ dungeon crawls are turn based. Animations are well done , colors are nice to look at . Game has crew management, ship management, the Island of Tortuga as a pirate friendly port/ base. There is goods trading , cool item pick ups, carib flavored magic. Actions are determined by dice rolls (which you can turn off if you dont want to see them ). Im playing on a 2018 HP Pavilion laptop, game runs super smooth for me on low "detail" level. Higher levels affected smoothness. At this time based on the tutorial I can recommend this game. It feels like a pirate version of the merc company games (BattleBrothers) , but much less brutal and frustrating . Its early access but very polished so far , once again only played tutorial so far.
Yes, Aaarghh. Includes trading, sea battles, dungeoning, digging out treasures and wacky characters. Every aspect of the game is pretty basic, there is no real thinking and plotting. I suppose it falls under strategy/party/turn based category but it's all and all a well thought out casual game. It gets pretty easy after you get the hang of it but keeps your interest with new unlocks and funny adventures. Has room for some gameplay and balance improvements of course but overall I love it.
I hate to give this a bad review, and if I could give a thumb slightly sideways but still pointing down, I would. It's extremely basic, and really made me want to load up classics like Uncharted Waters:New Horizons or Sid Meier's Pirates to enjoy a pirate game that got it right. -Pros: Dev is very active on the boards, and I always appreciate that. He seems genuinely interested in giving the community the game they want. The graphics are decent Has a fun cartoony vibe and doesn't take itself too seriously It's a pirate game, and those are in shorter supply then you would think -Cons: Doesn't incorporate most of the staples of the pirate game greats. You can't commandeer (capture) a vessel Extremely basic game play so far (I've only played 2 hours). I had read that this game wasn't for everyone because it was too hard to understand (can't remember the quote on the storefront) but I found it to be exactly the opposite. It has thus far been comically simple. There are pirate hunters that hunt you regardless of if you're a pirate or not. First mission I did nothing but trade, yet still the pirate hunters hunted me. Another example of the basic nature of the game. When upgrading (or downgrading) to a ship at the shipyard, you get no trade in value for your previous ship. Apparently you just donate it to the homeless.. The types of ships are extremely basic, and have only lateral increases. This means your smaller, typically more maneuverable ships are actually slower and steer worse than your larger ships. This makes no sense. The ships themselves (I think there are 4?) have very little diversity. What's a pirate game without diversity in ships!? I've played just over 2 hours, and run into 2 bugs. First, the mission didn't have the required items to purchase to complete. Second, when loading up a continue, it repeatedly crashed to desktop and I ended up having to restart that mission. In conclusion, it doesn't seem like a good value at the current price point and for what you get. Of course, this review could always change and I decided not to refund it at this time because I'd like to change my review if things improve.
If you buy this game have realistic expectations. This is NOT an XCOM2 level Turn based strategy game, and it is not a highly polished pirate ship simulator. There are a few annoying quality of life problems, some balance issues (imo), a few bugs etc. But Sink Again is a lot of fun. I doubt this will keep many players engaged for hundreds upon hundreds of hours, but you will most likely get more bang for your buck than you expect. Cool game. Try it
The Game is a bit repetetive, even tho there are alot of different Quests / Setups. I'll still give it a thumps up, because: - No Bugs - Money / Value is good - Fast paced - I can slap enemys with a fish - ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Voodoo
