«Simple Dot»
(This game was received for curation with no promise of a review, positive or otherwise.) Simple Dot is yet another cheap, minimalist physics puzzle game...and if you've just read that in a negative light because you're tired of being inundated with low-effort games from developers who are only out for a quick cash grab, then you will be pleasantly surprised to learn that this terrific little game is anything but bundle fodder. Simple Dot is aptly named: The goal of each level (there are currently 62, but difficulty is progressive) is to simply roll three "dots" (balls) into a bucket by drawing lines to create a safe path. As always in these types of games, things are more complicated than that simple premise sounds. The puzzle design is elegant and carefully crafted. Obstacles that prevent you from reaching the bucket include spikes, platforms that travel and flip, revolving doors, and others. Of course, you'll also have many different line types at your disposal as you progress through the game: straight lines, lines that repel, magnetic lines, bouncy lines that act like trampolines, and more. The graphics are smooth, and the "3 star system" variant it uses is inspired. Instead of using a timer as most recent games of the genre do, Simple Dot gives you a specific number of different line types to use in solving the puzzle. If you are able to complete it with those lines given, you are rewarded with all three stars. If not, stars are subtracted. Brilliant. You may replay a board at any time to try to improve your score. Leaderboards are included, but optional. I stated that the levels are elegant, and they are; by design, the game allows you to come up with solutions that use less than the suggested number of lines. But, more than that, you are also free to use any type of line you'd like, once you have unlocked them. While playing around with different lines won't contribute to your score, it does allow for some interesting and creative solutions. All that said, is it fun? I'll say that it can be maddening in the best possible way. At times, I found myself holding line positions on the monitor with my fingers to try to find that perfect angle, or wondering what would happen if I used a bouncy line instead of a ramp. I was always engaged, and watching balls drop, unprotected, onto spikes made me want to save them all as fast as I could; the fact that this kind of engagement happens without a timer is a testament to the designer's thoughtfulness. At the same time, the game is actually low stress because you are under no pressure at all. You can take as long as you like, and kill millions of balls...as long as you eventually drop three in the bucket, you're good. In other words: Yes, it's fun! You'll find the usual settings here: windowed / full screen, optional music and sound (both of which are unobtrusive). I'd love to see an even 100 puzzles, but the developer is very active with his customers, and the game is absolutely worth the current price of $1.99. Simple Dot is highly recommended. Great game. I like the puzzles and the replay value of the game. Trying to get the highest score in each puzzle is fun. Also others physics games with drawing elements usually have immense slowdowns, this one works perfectly. Gran juego.
I really like Simple Dot! After 30 hours I have been able to get 711,091 points and am listed as #1 at this time. It takes a lot of imagination and understanding to get above 4900 points on a level, but that is where I get the most satisfaction. I haven't been able to do that on all of them but on many of them. More please!
I started the game only for a moment, and stayed for over 2 hours... This is a great puzzle game with good music (but with minimalist graphics). We start slowly, and the mechanics are gradually presented to us. Real fun starts when there are more lines available and the levels open to us 3 and more different ways of solution. I spent over two hours passing the game and I know that I will come back to it to get all the achievements.
An inexpensive game with simple concept that is nicely executed. Dev is also quick to respond to issues as you can see below. So give it a go!
So why the thumbs down? Everything went fine and I was already optimising a few here and there when I got to level 15. Put in my first try for the first half, then went on to the last bit when dots stopped coming. For some reason the first part was failing now. Restarted and put in another solution for the first half and waited. And after a minute or so, the same solution that worked started failing again. So basically, the game is inconsistent, which is not only annoying, but also completely unfair with regard to the leaderboard. However, it will definitely be getting a thumbs up after this is fixed!
(Linux version was used for the review)
Simple and amazing! I only wanted to give it a try and eventually it kept me for the whole evening... Rules are simple, but it's not always so easy to solve - it gets harder with the time. Requires thinking! Very well made (incl. esthetics and music).
It's just so cool! I love it. It's simple and addictive :) Can't stop playing. On the beggining it's pretty easy, but after a few levels you need to really think for a while before you can pass. Challenging and funny!
This is an indie game with reasonably interesting mechanics (à la Rube Goldberg mechanisms or The Incredible Machine), but it's utterly lacking in polish. The physics are janky, and the balls occasionally behave erratically or outright despawn. Maybe they're on a timer? It's certainly not explained in-game. Crucial controls are missing - to my constant irritation, I couldn't find a way to delete any but the most recently placed obstacle. Also, some levels contain moving platforms. The par solution usually involves them, and they unfortunately slow down the game immensely. Speed controls could have circumvented this issue. Ultimately, despite my numerous misgivings about the game, I still found it reasonably enjoyable. It's just unfortunate that it falls far short of its potential due to some minor omissions.
In this video I take a look at Simple Dot a minimalistic puzzle game. I really enjoyed this game, it's very simple to grasp and fun to conquer the levels in the right amount of lines. At $2 USD it's really worth a look. Watch the video to see what the game is like..... https://youtu.be/7KKfo43C6fg Check'n Games, providing you with as many Let's Play's as we can.
