great game played for years

So good memories and its all alive again here. Game seems to work good. Just needs a moment to check the manual well, how you can actually also pilot your sub and things. After that, a nice way to spend long rainy days with this and a cup of irish coffee.

Simply unsuitable for a modern Windows system.

AHH the 'stalgia is strong with this game. Works perfectly in windows 10 via the bundled dosbox emulator.

This game is terrible. The controls dont work and there are no instructions and the on line instructions dont help. You cant even use it.

Silent Service 2 is a classic World War II Pacific theater submarine game. The play is realistic in that you may spend a period of time looking for contact. Then you may run into a singe merchant ship or patrol boat, or a convoy of juicy targets. The game requires a savvy approach to battle. Do you want to sink the escorts first and then go after the unprotected merchant ships, or should you use stealth to pick of the merchants and avoid the patrol boats or destroyers and thus conserve your torpedoes? Then there are the battle groups of carriers, battle ships and destroyers. Do you try to pick off a big ship and then dive deep and ride out the depth charge retaliation, or do you track the battle group until 3 am, when visibility is low and the lookouts are sleepy, moving close at dead slow and fire a spread at multiple big ships and escape during the resulting explosions and confusion topside? This is a great game with the essential torpedo targeting and ship management controls, and without the overly complex crew management systems on newer sub games. Sometimes you just can't beat the classics.

People who have never played this game need to understand, that this game is a SIMULATION. An old one at that. This game is very slow and has quite the learning curve, but once you understand what your're doing, everything just kind of clicks. My favorite mode is war career mode. You can start at any time on or after Pearl Harbor was bombed. You pick your patrol zone and just go. If you survive, that's great. But getting to the end of the war is the big challenge as the war and technology advances. Definitely recommend this to those that really like historical simulation games.

A great blast to the past

I just like submarines. Played this when it first came out and have enjoyed it for years. Glad it showed up on Steam! It is a very old game so the a/v is dated, but who cares?
