POST V1.0 RELEASE: This game seems like it's still riddled with bugs. I feel like some of the things in my early access review were fixed, but now I've found new ones. I don't want to take the time to list them out since I feel like some previous complaints were not addressed. Pressing "P" top pull up the balance menu is fun, though. EARLY ACCESS REVIEW: After beating this game almost twice, I need to update my review. This game is in early access and I expect some changes are in the works, but there are some very annoying issues right now. Pros: There might be other remakes out there, but this is the first time I've seen a remake of my favorite arcade game. The heart of the game is the same and I love that. They've added some unique elements for a modern twist and they pull it off well. Cons: The pauses before and after battle are very slow. I could understand that players may want a moment to recoup, but personally it feels boring. In an already fast paced game (mainly the building phase), I don't feel it necessary to slow things down. At the very least, maybe a "hold to skip" option or just an option in the settings? Despite being a modern game, I find the same difficulty placing pieces where I want them that I felt in the arcade game. It feels like they get stuck in place even when I'm moving my mouse. You have a crosshair for aiming and the ships are moving so you think you would need to lead your target, but I find myself always aiming behind the ships to hit them. The cannon balls always feel like they fall short, even when aiming directly at the ships. Makes you wonder why there's a crosshair and not just a mouse cursor. Enemy ships that are very far away are almost impossible to hit regardless of crosshair placement. Your cannon balls will never hit the back of the map despite the crosshair making you think they should. The sound effects when enclosing a section with walls are not always present and sometimes confusing. I've found myself not knowing when I've enclosed a city because there was no sound effect and also bombarded with sound effects when creating one by one closed wall sections. If anything, maybe only sound effects when enclosing a city and not blank spaces? On multiple occasions I've had enemies flock to the upper left hand corner of the map and stay there. Air ships are literally impossible to hit. Regular ships it's not so much of an issue, but when they do this on level three and even the boss ships flock to that area it's basically impossible to win. The combination of too many ships being cannon ball sponges and the inaccurate crosshair basically soft locks you from progressing. Also, mainly in the first level, Ships can approach from the far left and become hidden behind rocks. They become very difficult to see, but mostly to hit. I noticed cannon balls not even making it over there sometimes. If the ships can approach from over there, maybe make the mountains transparent? The beginning of every combat phase takes so long for your camera to pan to the enemies (another slow aspect) that they get a solid 4 seconds to blast you with cannon balls before you can even start aiming at them. Pan the camera then start? The three dimensional aspect of the play field makes it difficult to see wall placements and the lack of sound effects when enclosing a space makes knowing if a city is enclosed very difficult. Maybe make the cities transparent during build? Lastly, your walls can get damaged without breaking, but there's no way to tell. The only hint you get is that sometimes when you place a wall it will let you place it over another wall. I can't even confirm if that's the case, it's just my best guess. If that is the case, there needs to be a way to tell if you can build a new wall in the old wall's place. Maybe make the old walls flash red when you're in the build phase to indicate you can build over them? Conclusion: This game is headed in the right direction, but I don't think it's there yet. For the most part the basic functionality is there, all the basics, but the above issues have become frustrating. After four levels and buying every upgrade, there's not really anything left for me to do in this game besides wait for an update. I'm looking forward to the future of this game, it has a lot of potential. I'd also love to see multiplayer integrated as that was the most appealing part of the arcade game, but we'll see what happens.
Love it for obvious reasons!
First impressions are not good. I loved Rampart back in the day, but it had the decency to start slow and get harder over time. Every round most of the castle gets destroyed, and the time to rebuild your castle starts out really small. I've used the bulk of my booty extending that, which is kind of boring. Also there seems little to no reason to expand my castle. Maybe my memory is failing me, but I thought we could get more cannons. All making your castle bigger does here is make you more vulnerable. Bottom like is a game is made up of the decisions a player can make, and this game is ultra-lite on fun decisions. One thumb down. Maybe on a great sale... ADDENDUM: 48 minutes from start to bored and uninstalling.
Nice oldschool game, considering the price - great stuff =) All the best of improvements during the early access to devs!

This is a fun game that takes me back to my RAMPART arcade days, however, its very hard to figure out what you're missing on the walls because of the graphics. They tried so hard to be 3 dimensional they forgot to make it playable for people to see it. Over all its fun, but frustrating on repairing walls with the sloppy graphics, needs an update
