Sid Meier's Covert Action (Classic)

I have to echo the other negative reviews here: this is great if you remember playing it back in the day but it's indecipherable to new players. If you don't already know how to play - or don't fancy reading through this game's 100 page (!) manual - this game will just prove to be baffling.

I changed my thumbs-down review to thumbs up after spending some time in the game manual (and then writing a guide for dummies like me to figure out where to find the game manual). https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3262665652 The manual is... well it's all images for one thing. I.e. it hasn't been transcribed into text - the PDF is all image data of a scanned manual apparently. That means if you want text-to-speech for reading it out loud you're out of luck. But otherwise it's fine. If you like the puzzles in Zachtronics games, this will probably scratch the same itch. The game is a bit clunky with the UI as it is, but also provides game-play that is very entertaining and challenging. I love the wiretap and car-tracking puzzles! I have also managed to be taken prisoner and later escaped. There are little rewards of new bits of information to hopefully help you succeed on your mission of bringing criminals to justice. The crypto puzzles are a lot of fun converting gibberish into text. All of these are rather challenging - if puzzles aren't your thing this game won't be for you. You're choosing which locations and what tools to use to "gather" (which is a nice way of saying "wiretap" or "break-in" or "observe") information to figure out who the criminals are, where they are, and what they have done. I like it. Yes it is old as my original review says, but there is fun to be had here.

Unreal this has not been redone, fantastic game design and concept after all these years!

A great little puzzle solving game to hunt down the bad guys across the globe. A nice way to chew up 20 minutes or so.

Old time classic. I never got tired of this game and always wanted a remake. Nothing modern ever reached this level. I would love to see a real modern adaptation of this masterpiece.

It really is a great game, there are plenty enough reviews to show that. The only problem is that the infiltration minigame is either too easy or too hard. And you have to use that minigame to really get anywhere.
