Assembly programming game with a simple twist - you can only use one instruction. Later tasks would be challenging even for experienced low-level developers. Fun, mind-bending towards the end.
I enjoyed this game, but I cannot recommend it to other players, because it is very very niche. This game tries to answer the question: what is the minimal assembly language? So ask yourself, do you want to write assembly language? I guess the answer is no. If you do, would you want to use a minimal assembly language? Surely you don't. If you do, is you did want to use a minimal assembly language, is this the one you would use? Also no. This game is a Zach-like. If you don't know what that is, you should go play any game by Zachtronics before you try this game. If you do, then you might be interested in this game, but you should play any other Zach-likes first. If you're out of Zach-likes to try, maybe try this one. The other kind of person that might like this kind of game is a programming language enthusiast. If you've actually enjoyed writing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ programs, then you might like this game! I will say that the polish of the game is adequate. I could suggest some improvements, but there aren't any features that I find unduly lacking. Also, there's a story; I like games with a story, and you probably do too.

It's a Zachlike. It's a definite "If you like this sort of thing,, then..." game, where you write programs for a fictional processor that only has a single instruction. It's got a pretty good backstory too -- and, most importantly, there's a frustrating minigame to help distract you.
The concept of OISC is not new to me; in fact, having recently played "A=B", I've seen how far to the extreme it can be taken (in that case, only assignments were used). So, at least in this aspect, the game only surprised me to a certain extent, even though subleq is a very fun and expressive "language." What really amazed me is that this is the first assembly programming game where there is actually a (virtual) RAM. Usually, in this genre, you're limited to working with a series of registers, or at most, in some levels, they implement an array/stack/queue that acts as a data collection, but it's always something external to the language's architecture. Here, instead, you have 255 bytes to work with, and above all, when you compile the code, it gets allocated in the RAM alongside the data. And this is normal because instructions and data are virtually identical; it's only the logic of the program that allows us to distinguish them, but we tend to forget this, made lazy by high-level languages. It is fascinating that you can therefore write instructions that go write into the bytes of other instructions—self-modifying/self-generating code. And it's not a secondary trick for crazy and esoteric optimizations, but a mechanic the game gives you a tutorial on and actively expects you to use. Furthermore, the fact that it's a single command makes everything more immediate because there are no opcodes; every instruction is expressed solely in terms of the addresses of the values it operates on. Actually, everything I've mentioned is normal and common in "real" assembly, but this is the first game that exploits these ideas, and it's genuinely a lot of fun. P.S. Unfortunately, achievements don't work on the Linux version, while the Windows version under Proton (which would probably fix the issue) barely even opens :(
