(This is my first ever review on any game ever.) As a photography geek, this game scratches almost ALL of the itches of photography without having to leave the house. The variety of islands, the colours, filters and ability to change the focal length & depth of field are definitely something that I enjoy a lot. I've already taken so many pictures that I actually really like and that I find very interesting. As opinions for improvement, I have a few. My first, and probably my main request: the ability to adjust exposure. I understand that the camera being used in the game is probably something close to a point and shoot, but being able to adjust the exposures would make this AMAZING for me. I love some of the filters, but I can't always use them due to the bright light being emitted by the giant ball of radiance in the sky. My other suggestions are mainly improvements to be added over time. These are things such as: - More filters/ways of adjusting the looks of our images, - New "subjects" across the islands (examples being building/ruin-type structures for the city/street photographers and other creatures like animals and insects as they could be interesting for the wildlife photographers), - Day & night cycles and different weather types. Also, just as an added note - maybe further quality of life improvements like the ability to adjust the volumes of in game stuffs and being able to change key binds could be quite nice. Anyway, that's all just my 2 pence thrown in. Either way, I will 100% be coming back to this game regularly (especially when I can't get out to take photos IRL). So much love towards this piece of art, and really look forward to any further development on it. I thank you kindly for reading.
I do like experimental games like this. My only feedback would be that I would love for there to be some extra things to find on the islands, like ruins, or animals. What's here is really cool, but it definitely could be better. https://youtu.be/RK08hSeR3AQ
It's a nice, cozy game with beautiful scenery. There are some very atmospheric islands and the photos you take get saved in the Steam screenshot folder, so you can use them easily as wallpapers or something like that. I just think it would be cool if some critters flew or crawled on the islands, but overall, it's a nice and relaxing game!
This is a lot of fun! I am a big fan of open-ended walking simulators (but I know they aren't for everyone). I like the aesthetic and variety across the islands, the menus are well thought out, and the photography is engaging (for me, at least). The Depth of Field and camera settings are well-implemented, and I got some really neat photos during my first hour or so. Recommended if you like photography and exploration!
Relaxing and beautiful. This game is exactly what it says it is, and if that sounds good to you then you should buy it. It's a simple game with a lot of care given to each of its parts. It's a visuals-focused experience which really does succeed in transporting you to serene, expressive locations that are a joy to explore and photograph. The basic structure consists of visiting an islands, taking pictures, and then returning to your boat and choosing the coordinates for a new island. I really enjoyed the idea of using longitude and latitude coordinates for island seeds, and the nautical interface for it is a great touch. You can also save ("remember") islands, which you can then easily re-enter from the main menu. By default, only the last photo you take on each island before leaving is saved, which forces you to be thoughtful and deliberate. However, there is an option to save as many pictures as you want, and I preferred this because often I would get that awesome picture but want to keep exploring and taking more pictures before leaving the island. Speaking of options, there are quite a few, including a sprint button which is disabled by default but can be turned on if you find yourself getting impatient. I left it off because the default speed seems perfect for taking in the surroundings and noticing good pictures. But I think its great that the option is there. The camera has a number of options and settings which allow you to accomplish a variety different looks and get creative with your photography. I think the aperture/ focus/ focus-lock system is implemented very smartly, and the filters actually look good (which is unusual for photo modes, lets be honest here). My only complaint wrt camera mode is that the buttons to skew the camera are mapped to J and L, and these are the only keys in the game which aren't re-mappable. I expect that this will be remedied in a future update tho, and it doesn't distract much from the enjoyability of lining shots up. The exploration and atmosphere are really the star of the show, especially because of the excellent color palletes and shader work. There are a lot of really great atmospheric details which vary by island, from the phases of the moon to rivers which flow to the ocean, to variety of visually-striking weather effects. The islands really are the star of the show here, and are a joy to photograph. I've played several other open-ended first person photography games, and Shutter Stroll is by far the most visually striking and contemplative. You really just want to sit in these places, feel them on your skin, and take in the serenity. Of course, as is always the case with procgen levels, there inevitably comes a point where its ability to show you new stuff slows down, and it becomes a little less exciting to explore. This is normal for a game like this, but there is always that feeling of "I wish there was more stuff". I will say that there are a fairly large amount of rare scenery to discover, some of which is really creative and beautiful; I thought I saw them all, but looking at screenshots I see several I never encountered. Still, I would have liked to see more varied foliage models and grass (since these are the most common type of scenery), and perhaps more occasions where the level generator went outside its typical patterns. Still, i think the game delivers on what it promises to wrt the amount of content, and Im still finding something to love about each island several hours in. Regardless, Shutter Stroll is definitely worth your time and the very reasonable price of admission. Yes, its a relaxing time, but it's contemplative and affective too like the feeling of sitting by the ocean and just listening. There really is more to find than you might assume.
works on me steam deck :)
I have only explored a couple of islands (~8) and taken a few dozen pictures, but I can already tell that this game will be with me for a long time. To me it feels like a perfect game for when I just want to relax and stroll (ha!) around beautiful islands, explore the fantastic and colourful scenery and take pictures to practice my virtual photography skills. Highly recommended, especially if you're into photography and especially photography games!
I'll probably fill this review out a bit more once I've spent a bit more time with the Steam version (because it looks like there's quite a bit to seek out and find), but I've played the Itch.io version for an hour and a bit. I have a couple of touchstones for why it is that Shutter Stroll appeals to me. The first is actual nature photography; exploring a space, enjoying the sights and finding a way of re-framing them with a camera with the aim of capturing what being there feels like. Finding something that looks majestic, or solemn, or nostalgic, and trying to encapsulate that majesty, or solemnity or nostalgia in two dimensions. Shutter Stroll does this well; at every new island you'll find yourself looking for the perfect vantage point to frame the moon against the ocean, or find the right spot to capture the hills rolling off into the foggy distance. The second touchstone is No Man's Sky 1.0, as it released in 2016. While I've enjoyed the game since then, it has never felt the same as it did when the bulk of what you were doing was being a tourist in a procedurally generated universe; even before it had a dedicated photo mode, I was using the PS4's built-in capture tools to document my travels. While it's obviously much smaller in scope, Shutter Stroll still recaptures a lot of those feelings for me; the wonder of discovering something unique, something that feels anomalous, and the transient nature of the islands. Explore, catalogue, move on.
i love this game!! the imagery in shutter stroll is gorgeous across the board, and surprisingly evocative—as someone who loves taking photos on my hikes in real life, i find it incredibly satisfying to be able to approach these these ethereal, mysterious, and uniquely vibrant islands in the same fashion. i especially adore how consistently stunning the (i believe randomly generated?) color palettes are, despite the fact that they're all super distinct from each other. of note: you should not go into this game expecting *content*. this is a game that presents you with a plethora of environments, but doesn't go out of its way to try to engage you, nor impose upon you any specific ways to interact or explore. at the end of the day, this game will be what you make of it—whether it be a therapeutic experience, a creative outlet, or something else entirely—so if you're looking for meaning or value in this game, the onus is largely on you to find it. i've personally found this game to be a great source of creative inspiration—i've used photos i've taken in earlier versions of this game as a starting point for writing music on several occasions, and those songs have become some of my proudest work to date. regardless, this game is thoroughly worth a shot! give it a bit of your time, and i think you'll be pleasantly surprised with what you get out of it.
A nice relaxing photography game. I love playing around with the camera settings and filters and the islands feel so unique. I just wanna print all the photos from the game and hang them on my wall.
