This game is... strange. It is said to come from an established developer, but it feels like a game made by novice into RPG Maker. Everything from pyramid with screenfuls of the same tile graphics repeating over and over, a spell decreasing and increasing MP at the same time, unfunny jokes, boring battles and incoherent plot line is something we've seen over and over in novice's games in the RPG Maker community. Which, in itself, is OK: how can novices learn without making bad games first? However, this was not done my a novice. This was done by an author of an (apparently) good game! Who apparently knows how to make things look good, but choose to uglify the standard RTP with posterization. Why would a good developer make... this? For some reason, it is presented as a sample game for RPG Maker MZ. It's a bizzare choice. A sample game should demonstrate the good points of the engine, and not mistakes made my novices. I can't understand why someone deliberately chose to make a bad game and publish it into a sample game. Maybe they were paid before showing the result, and were trying to sabotage Kadokawa's RPG Maker MZ? (I would understand it: RMMZ is totally underwhelming; for the money of a new editor, you just get the same RMMV with a few new features, which was not very nice; I personally would totally sabotage RMMZ) But if it were sabotage, why would RPG Maker people still upload this to Steam? So many questions, so few answers... Anyway, I'm disappointed I've spent 1 hour of my life on this game.

Note: My hours played are misleading since I ran the game directly for most of the playthrough. In reality I've finished this game after about 1.5 hours since I took my time and looked around. The Good

It's free, and that's hard to beat.
The developer took a fair amount of time to add unique descriptions to a lot of random objects in the environment. Even objects that look the same (like the random shields in one of the dungeons) each have unique descriptions.
Pretty simple and easy to pick up and play if you've ever played a classic-style RPG and/or RPGMaker game
The Bad

Rather than using RPGMaker's shop system, which lets you view information about equipment you're buying, the developer decided to create their own much simpler shop system. What sucks about it is that you can't actually get any sort of preview for items before you buy them.
The combat is horribly unbalanced, and while I realize the developer was going for a sort of tactics-based, 1-on-1 battle system, the only real tactic seems to be "hit enemies hard and kill them before they kill you" because you can't outheal in most cases and some even buff themselves. Don't be shy with MP either because your healing skill (once you learn it) also fully restores your MP and can be used between battles.
Even worse with combat is the fact that it uses a time-based system where enemies will continue clubbing you while you read your skill descriptions and attempt to make a decision. I'm going to help you guys out with this, though:
[olist]
Navigate to the game's install location: ???/steamapps/common/Shus Misfortune/data
Make a backup of "System.json" (not "1System.json") just in case something goes wrong so you can restore it.
Open System.json in a text editor and search for "battleSystem". Change the entry from 1 to 2, then save.
Time will now pause when your turn comes up, giving you as much time as you need to enjoy the combat at a more relaxed pace.[/olist] The Ugly

Mapping is kind of messy and the insides of many houses/dungeons look just plain weird as a result.
Lots of passability errors. I've been able to climb up and walk through walls in several places.
Buggy eventing. For example, right when you start and the servant girl talks to you, you can step back on the square to activate the scene with her to trigger it again. And again. And again.
Storywise, there doesn't seem to be any clear motive for why the main character wants to kill her father.
Overall In all, it was a fun waste of an hour and a half, but given all of its faults, I would've probably put in for a refund had I paid money for something so buggy and unbalanced. But since it's free, I'm going to recommend it to anyone who wants a quick RPG to kill part of an afternoon with.

RPG Maker strikes again! Shu's Misfortune is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. this is a bizarre and frankly awful JRPG with a weird "fashion" theme that just doesn't work, along with all the normal high school anime club dropout fanfiction writing, bad map design, flipped RPG Maker assets... ugh. At least they're not trying to get money for this, but I think this should be a paid product. They should pay me for the time I wasted playing this garbage. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers. This is "free" enough, at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 4 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.
This is free on steam, but my first time to enjoy an mz game, it's about strategy without stressing the player, i also like everything about this game such as the plot, the sue of the enemy assets, and the funny conversations.
