Short version: Pros: + Enjoyable gameplay (if a bit too easy) + Simple but solid attempt at a story + Visually interesting (apart from cutscenes) + Solid sound design Cons: - Several annoying puzzles, items to find and objectives - Some presentation flaws (mobile game vibes) "Long" version: Shtriga: Summer Camp is a point-and-click, hidden object game where you play as a woman (my understanding is that she is a private investigator) trying to save a young boy, who has been kidnapped by an evil witch. It was developed by Game Cartel and published by Alawar Casual. Point and click games are not usually something I go for often – on the other hand, the hidden object genre is something I used to downright avoid. I installed Shtriga: Summer Camp on a whim, wanting to play a random game on my account. I ended up being pleasantly surprised, so here are my thoughts. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3270146333 The story is quite basic but I found it enjoyable. There are no interesting characters or plot twists, but it keeps moving along, constantly unlocking more areas for you to explore. It was a welcome addition that next dragged on. Very commendable in a game like this. Gameplay has two main focuses – finding hidden objects and solving puzzles in the environment. Some hidden objects are a bit trickier to find but there is nothing mind blowing. The puzzles are, for the most part, very simple and story progression never really comes to a halt – which was great – there was never a dull moment in my playthrough. Finding objects will grant you the ability to interact with other parts of the environment, like a sewer grate or a simple door, unlocking new areas and yet more puzzles. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3270151794 Of course, there are certain puzzles that had me go around and around certain areas to look for a very specific detail – but nothing that ruined the experience for me. After solving enough puzzles and hidden object games you will need to solve a harder challenge that requires a bit of thinking – these are few and far between but served as a satisfying side dish to the regular gameplay. Graphically, I really enjoyed Shtriga: Summer Camp’s presentation. The cutscenes and animations look a bit janky, but the environments look wonderful and detailed – discovering their secrets was a blast. The game was colorful, with plenty of visual variety and a sense of wonderment. The soundtrack is serviceable, being a very mysterious and fantastic beat with some horror sprinkled throughout. Sound effects were rather basic, but again, they worked. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3270141544 I completed Shtriga: Summer Camp in a single afternoon (4 hous- I took a short break while it was running). It currently costs 4€ - I believe that is an adequate price tag. It is definitely worth it if you want a more casual experience and have an afternoon to “burn”. It is not the best thing ever, but it is super enjoyable. Final score: 7.5 out of 10. Welp. People already spoke all there is to say about the game in the reviews. All I will add is this: The game wasn't too hard or too easy. You don't get lost that often. (Phew!) I actually liked playing this and will take this game over any newer H.O.G. nowadays. >.> The only qualm I had with this game was that it was rather hard to click on some of the items in the H.O. scenes. I swear I clicked on that knife 7x and it still refused to pick it up... Lol... Otherwise? I'd play it again. ^-^ Thanks you!! :) :> :3
CREEPY AND SUMMER CAMP SHOULD NEVER GO TOGETHER
Brenda Livingston is a paranormal detective who has been hired to find a young boy named Peter Wilson, who disappeared without a trace. A few weeks before Peter's disappearance, he began acting strangely and became fascinated with the strange phenomena surrounding the closure of a local summer camp. The camp was quarantined and eventually shut down after campers were stricken with a deadly epidemic, and three campers went missing; all three were presumed dead. No one does a creepy, abandoned town....in this case, an abandoned Summer Camp, better than Alawar. The graphics cleverly depict a story of solitude as you roam the well-beaten paths and search boarded-up buildings deprived of maintenance for years. It's hard to imagine this camp was once bustling with summer activities. Now the atmosphere is dark and heavy as if something evil is lurking around every corner and watching your every move. As luck would have it, there is an evil spirit lurking, and her name is Shtriga!
FUN MYTHOLOGY FACT
A Shtriga is a vampiric witch in Albanian mythology who preys upon children by sucking their essence during the night, which destroys the child's immune system. The Shtriga then transform themselves into a flying insect, such as a moth, fly, or bee. Shtriga is usually depicted as an old woman with a crooked nose and a hateful stare, but they are occasionally depicted as a male entity, known as Shtrigu or Shtrigan. Shtriga: Summer Camp has no frills, no bells and whistles, no morphing objects, no collectibles, no voiceovers ...it doesn't even have a Map. (technically, there is a camp map on the bulletin board, just inside the main entrance). There are several interactive objects throughout the camp which is surprising considering it was released over a decade ago! As you progress, you'll discover secret entrances and underground tunnels, so it does get a bit tricky remembering where everything is located. This "free-roaming" adventure aspect has all but disappeared in current HOPAs. I truly miss being able to wander from scene to scene and trying to remember where a particular task was located once I found the correct inventory item.
JOURNAL & CLUES
These were the good 'ole days when a Journal kept track of not only the progressing story but also the clues and codes you uncover along the way! Check your Journal often because it fills in the blanks of the story and gives you important clues to help you progress.
HIDDEN OBJECT SCENES
The Hidden Object Scenes are just Interactive List finds; again, there are no bells and whistles, just good old-fashioned HO's. Most of the items are easily spotted, but there's always one or two items that will elude you for a bit. There are a handful of scenes that are repeated (with a different set of objects to find). If you get stumped and can't seem to find an inventory item, travel back to some of the previous HO scenes to see if a new one has been activated. (the repeated scenes seem to require doing a particular task in a different location to activate the HO)
MINI-GAMES
If you're a hardcore puzzle-lover, these will probably be a letdown because most can be solved in a flash; however, they do get a bit trickier as you progress. I don't believe a puzzle has to be a brain-burner to be enjoyable, especially when there's a "complete all mini-games" achievement attached. Thankfully, there was only one Slider puzzle because this is my only puzzle nemesis! TOP TEN FAVORITES ⚙️Place wires of various lengths and angles to set gauge at 32 volts. ⚙️Place books according to three categories, math-biology-physics. ⚙️Move smiley face tokens along paths to their color-coded slots. ⚙️Memory Match-Flip over 2 tiles at a time to match related objects. ⚙️Swap lock teeth on the bottom row to align with the top row. ⚙️Use up/down arrows on columns to make a path of pipes on both sides. ⚙️Fill vials to the correct levels according to the clue found earlier. ⚙️Complete the moon phases by rotating the central disc & swapping. ⚙️Follow chains and place matching tokens on the bottom. ⚙️Change numbers on the green dots to equal the sum of the number in between. Shtriga: Summer Camp will appeal to those who enjoy creepy, abandoned town graphics, a decent story, and the ability to free-roam from the first scene to the last, throughout the adventure. Although the Hidden Object Scenes and puzzles tend to be easily solved, its still a very unique and enjoyable game that may have slipped under your radar! While it worked, this game doesn't even have the excuse of decent puzzles or a really dumb but fun plot to get me to recommend it. The game boots up, doesn't stutter, and has puzzles, but to what end? It's just such a nothing experience. I guess it's under 5 bucks, so that might be motivation to try it, especially if you get this in a bundle with some other games you actually want, if it's on sale (I originally bought it for under a dollar, which was about right for how much I got out of it), if you need a quick influx of steam achievements, or if you're recovering from having your wisdom teeth removed, and need a game that doesn't expect much out of you, because the plot ,music, characters, and setting are cobbled together out of old refrigerator boxes and the gameplay isn't too far behind.
