About

Shovel Knight is a sweeping, classic action-adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small warrior with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!
But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent Shovel Knight from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, lovable bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… Shovel Knight is for you!

Although some of its shine has faded now that the nostalgia wave for 8/16-bit action-platformers passed long ago, Shovel Knight still holds up remarkably well. It’s a modern classic. A love letter to and celebration of its genre that, like the best indie games, refuses to reduce itself to merely being a retro throwback. Instead, it’s a confident take that dives into three decades of game design, blending those influences with modern sensibilities to create an experience that feels genuinely fresh. Shovel Knight is essentially a bouncy modern iteration of Mega Man while simultaneously incorporating elements that range from Zelda II to Dark Souls (and even a few forgotten darlings like VVVVVV). It's a burst of nostalgia that, thankfully, doesn’t constrain itself too much in pursuit of the feeling it wants to evoke. This is immediately evident in its far tighter gameplay, smoother and more fluid animations, clean visuals with vibrant colors, and a much wider field of view—something none of the classics that inspired it could offer. There isn’t a single poorly designed stage in the entire game. The difficulty curve is smooth and perfectly paced, with a constant rotation of ideas that never slips into monotony. This is masterfully supported by the progression system, which provides a steady stream of new abilities while leaving room for meaningful choices based on the player's familiarity with the game, allowing more experienced players to benefit from riskier and more demanding playstyles. Aside from a handful of enemies that completely disregard the level design and occasionally cause unavoidable deaths, the game's only real weakness lies in its boss fights. Most of them are a little too easy and simple for their own good and rely more on the charisma of their character designs than on the quality of the encounters themselves. The exceptions, strangely enough, are ridiculously overtuned, featuring constant random attack spams that encourages abusing spells and chalices (items that can fully restore your health and even grant temporary invulnerability) rather than learning patterns and reacting skillfully. They feel completely at odds with the gameplay of the stages and the rest of the boss roster. Beyond that, it’s an impeccable experience. Wrapped in the simplicity and focus that represented the best of these old-school games, without dragging along any of the frustrating baggage that people have somehow gaslit themselves into believing was fair and rewarding challenge. Shovel Knight avoids that trap entirely and delivers an adventure that is pure joy, as well as one of the finest examples of how to do nostalgia right. Cheerful music. Clever subversions of clichés. Talking fish... that dance! The game is overflowing with charm and sense of humor. It radiates infectious energy and is packed with well-placed references. It’s inexpensive, accessible to virtually everyone, and highly replayable. I think I’ve owned three or four copies of the game over the years, and I’ve never regretted spending a single cent. And there’s still a wealth of DLC campaigns to extend your stay, along with co-op gameplay and speedrunning support. It’s genuinely impressive how much mileage they managed to get out of this thing. P.S: If you're interested in the DLCs, buy the Treasure Trove version, which includes everything. If you buy this version and then go after the DLCs, the Plague of Shadows campaign will be unavailable for purchase.
