The game wants you to leave a review so here we are. Let's just start with begging the player for a review when the game is in such a rough shape is quite a bold move. The game is one of the most broken bullet heaven games I've played in early access and it should have never released in a state like this. Weapon evolutions that are completely broken and do nothing, knockback being mentioned but doesn't work at all for any weapon, a hitbox that extends beyond your character model and a grind that puts most games to shame. Using lootbox mechanics in a single player game is baffling to say the least. Granted there are some hints of a proper game behind the broken things so hopefully the devs can step up and do a full overhaul of the grind and RNG elements while also fixing all the bugs but in the meantime stay away from this one
I really like giving these games a chance. A fiver for a chance at a great game is always a risk worth taking. But this one isn't the gem in the rough you're looking for. the screens and reviews make it seem like more of an RPG than the other entries in the genre, but I found three quests: the tutorial collect food, complete the first area, and then complete all areas. You can already see almost half the game's dialog in the store screenshots. The "RPG elements" boil down to "the upgrade menu is a town you walk around in, but then when you talk to people they open the upgrade menus". There appears to be an "orbs" concept that looked like it added something to individual weapons, but after a bit over an hour I didn't interact with that system so I can't tell you about it. But if the gameplay was anything exciting or interesting, I'd forgive that - the combat is where it's at. But it is the most straight clone of Vampire Survivors first early access build ever. One Weapon plus One passive = upgrade, the weapons have a tiny bit of variation from VS, but there aren't really enough of them - you'll have overlap in every single run because you have more slots than there are weapon types. It has the courtesy to tell you about evolution without having to discover them yourself first, at least. But worst of all is the fact that certain upgrades cause the game to bog down and drop your FPS massively - I'm pretty sure the ghost upgrade was the culprit for me. At 16 minutes when I got the upgrade, it was chunky but I figured I'd just finish the map but never take ghost again. But it just kept getting worse and worse, so at 18 minutes I had to alt+f4 (and refund). I wouldn't be surprised if that gets fixed soon enough, but given the rest of the game being thoroughly average, I can't really say I'd recommend over other genre entries. It's not BAD - as others mentioned, the art is pretty good - it's just not recommendation worthy.
Sharded World attempts to distance itself a little bit from all the other bullet heaven titles where the player is just thrown into non-stop action, by giving a weight to players' actions. First of all, it presents an interesting lore with actual characters with a personality explaining what happened, how come we go in locations overran by dangerous monsters and a mysterious vampire. The first time the player walks into the arena they don't even have a weapon - we just have to learn how to avoid enemies while collecting resources. Then slowly but surely the weapons, the perks and all the fun stuff arrive. There's a pretty large hub with a lot of RPG-esque progression to gain from all the vendors, smiths, fighters, etc.. A lot of different characters to unlock, tons of starting weapons to obtain and ugprade, even via insertable gems, on top of permanent and temporary boosts to stats as well. There's even standalone challenges, such as beating the final boss using a single upgraded weapon and much to unlock - with rewards for these usually manifesting in chests giving gold, resources or rare weapons. So far there's a single playable stage, though in many shapes and forms, but the second one is going to be available in mere 2 weeks already according to the game. I'm looking forward to more: Sharded World has a distinct identity, and mixes RPG elements and a large progression, even though the gameplay can feel a bit slow and unlocks right now can be a bit too long to get. No doubt this can be balanced in this Early Access game's future, however. Bullet Heaven Fandom review #51. I love VS-like games, but this one really got my eye on thanks to its visuals. When i've got into the game i found myself playing for hours which was really surprising. The visuals, as i expected buying this game, are so nuts, never seen anything like this in this genre. I love The Binding of Isaac a lot and what makes me want to play this game is ability to create absolutely crazy builds after playing some time into the chapter just like in TBoI. So i was about to play 10 to 20 minutes but spent my whole evening trying not to die while running to the last altar. Pretty interested in how game would look like in couple months.
Just don't, any other survival game is more fun. (including the demo, play that instead.) It has some nice twisted to make the game more challenging but its does to many of them all ad once with noting to counter balance it. - swarmed map: there is always a fixed amount of mobs. if you like 20, 20 more will spawn. After the fist mini boss there is now where to run and the chip damage begins. -no health regen, or very little with the passive skill, if you get it in time. but its not enough to survive most runs, let alone the end boss. - breakables can be healing, but also be rigged with a gnome of instant death. - some skills just suck so you end up most runs with the same skills all the time. (no damage skills and skills that damage the player too (great with no regen) - Daily's to unlock new weapons, seems nice but most of them is like beat the level with X skill skill can be useless and winning is not easy even with min-maxing. Also getting a daily reward might result in a crappy weapon that you already have. but ad level 1. It also give some random resources but never enough to buy an upgrade. - unlocks, there is a trainer and a smith to level up your character and (starter)weapons. they need a ton of resources and give very little back. I got my weapon up to level 7 and char to level 18 but it still the same feel as they where on level 1 (mind you not winning does not give much, so this took 4 hours to get.) - Boring by design, Since you are investing into you main char and weapon. it would be silly to pick anything else. since picking anything other then those would put you back to day one in power. TLDR, game has potential, but the stacking difficulty makes it boring and tedious AF.
I really enjoyed the well-balanced weapons in the game, which helped me overcome increasingly challenging levels. However, the graphics and sound effects could be better but are really catching.. At first, I experienced some technical issues but through some updates and hot-fixes all of them disappeared that says a lot about devs of this project. Overall, Sharded World is a unique game that combines simple yet addictive gameplay. I recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting and challenging RPG game.
Mildly rough around the edges (which is quite fair for early access.) Overall, It's fun, even for the genre. It feels familiar in a way that isn't just that "more of the same" feel, while adding abit more RPG bones than the standard genre titles. There's mountains of potential here, I'm interested to see how developer Nasty Cat finalizes this title.
Following the early March update, this game is actually playable to me now. They fixed several of my major problems with the game, it's still a rough around the edges early access title, but definitely moving in the right direction. My original complaints: "The interface is a little clunky, and doesn't currently support controllers (a huge strike for me)." This is still a problem. A controller works in combat, but you need to use the mouse to interact with any of the menus. "The game play is a little slow paced for the genre, and upgrades take a while to build up." It doesn't feel as slow as it used to, and while upgrades still take a while, the lack of them doesn't feel like it hamstrings you as much. "The weapon assortment is currently incredibly limited, but very few of them actually feel worth using. Several, in fact, are more of a liability than a benefit." Still a problem. There's 3 weapons just as dangerous to you as they are to your enemies, I get the point of that from a realism standpoint but I hate it in this style of game. "You have a lot of directional weapons, without the ability to change facing independent of your moving." Fixed, your facing is now independent of your movement, allowing you to fire in one direction while moving another. (This was the one that rendered the game unplayable in my opinion) "It uses the Vampire Survivors Weapon+Passive=evolved weapon model, which can be fun, but also gets frustrating because you're relying on RNGesus, currently it's not a big deal but once more weapons and upgrades are added it will quickly end up a hindrance. - as a related positive, you appear to have unlimited rerolls, but only once per level up." Hasn't changed, still a bit of an annoyance. It still needs some work, as I said it's still a rough around the edges early access title, but they're moving in the right direction. I no longer regret buying the game. My verdict: If you're a fan of the genre and want to support indie developers, it's worth picking up. If you're looking for something with a lot of content to keep you playing a while? Probably give it a few more months, as there's not a lot to do just yet. P.S. Don't bother using the demo to decide if it's worth it. The demo is slower and clunkier, without any of the features enabled that at all set this game apart from its myriad of competitors.
Nice little Bulletheaven with storyelements and a main hub where you get your quests and can upgrade your weapons. +1 for the pixelgraphics.
I'm leaving this review in order to be allowed to claim achievement rewards in game. edit: a day later, i still can't claim the rewards. Interface needs work with controller.
