Steps awaken worlds unseen. Stories murmur through shifting hue. The ground shivers, the sky bleeds ink. A living stillness—breathing, new.
Some parts of it look nice but that's about it. If it were good, it wouldn't need a "play it for at least 3 hours at once" achievement to boost the playtime. It's also extremely overpriced, there's literally 30 minutes of actual content in.
Cute, and Epic
Shape of the World, is an unusual choice for a title, for a game that would sit alongside EIDOLON, Flower, Proteus and ABZU. Other games in the "peacefull" exploration of psychadelic environments seem to go with one word. I'll bet there are exceptions, but the point is, it's very cute and it's very fresh. Borrowing elements from Proteus in many departments with the exception of the map being pre-made, the trees and wildlife are all procedurally generated to be different each time you come near. Some animals even eat the plant-life, and some animals and plant-life will even interact with you! Shape of the World still feels all random and generated, but instead each map is solvable and you should not get blocked because of an RNG. Terrain springs up at you as you approach, either blocking or directing and sometimes aiding you forwards to a goal, but it's really only the life that is random. It's very much alive, and full of playful creatures. The stand-out difference in gameplay is that Shape of the World 2 simple goals, collect seeds, and hit the big stone monuments. The rough direction to the exit is always marked for you. Instead of getting harder as the game progresses, it becomes easier. The levels get bigger too and you pick up speed, and before you know it you are half way through the 9 chapters. Play as quickly or as slowly as you like, I finished in under 3 hours in 3 sittings.
Top Tip
Use your collected seeds, if you exit the game and start from a chapter point you start with no seeds, and have to find some to be able to plant trees. Trees can help you move more quickly and reach places you might struggle to get to. Also, scan around for hidden areas, where you might even find extra seeds of a different kind. I really enjoyed the game, if you enjoy this kind of game, do check out similar games I have reviewed here https://store.steampowered.com/curator/41773079-EmpathyGames/list/90741/
It doesn't work. The thing hard crashes shortly after launch with no error message, straight return to Windows, and none of the people who already had this problem on the forums were offered a solution. I would love to sink in there and have an informed opinion, but I can't, alas.
Shape of the World is a nice adventure game with some original colored graphics and a cozy ambiant. I recommend it!!! 💗💗💗

bottleofskuma
Shape of the World
The visuals are stunning, even if I, like other reviewers, did not love the pastels in the initial levels, and the sound work is immersive, impressive, and very well done. It reminds me a lot of Journey, Abzu, and other games of the genre, where you get to spend a little while immersed in colorful graphics and just vibe, but... ...unfortunately, there was no vibing to be had in my case, as the controls on this thing feel just awful. I felt like I played this whole game wading through the Boston Molasses Disaster. It was like the beautiful version of being stuck behind two semi-trucks going 20 under on the freeway. For an hour and a half, I was a native New Yorker stuck behind the world's slowest tourist, and no amount of seed-launching or tree-hopping could make me go at a speed that felt any faster than watching paint dry. When I did find the big stones you can use to launch yourself, I frequently flung myself off of the mountain I was climbing and had to start. All. Over. Between that and every object constantly feeling too far away to interact with (a big stone could have pulled me back to where I fell, but the distance you need to be from them is very inconsistent), it was a maddening experience, and it absolutely discouraged exploration, which was the entire point. It is worth noting that I experienced no bugs or crashes whatsoever, so that issue seems to have been resolved; as I came very close to quitting out of sheer frustration, it's likely that if my game had crashed I would not have picked it back up. I'm not going to give a walking sim a thumbs down for being a walking sim; I don't need it to have fancy puzzles, platforming challenges, or enemies to defeat. What I do need it to do is make it not unpleasant to walk!
It pains me to give this game a bad review but the bugs in this game is appalling. The visuals are great but I wish this game was fixed because I am not the only who's facing issues with this game. Maby this is better on console then PC.
